Zebulon Vance was a veteran of the Confederate army who also served as governor during the Civil War. But most of the criticism centered on Charles Aycock, who served as governor from 1901 to 1905.
Aycock is remembered as a strong proponent of public schools, which led to his being known as "the Education Governor." His name adorns schools and other public buildings across the state, and a statue depicting him stands on the grounds of the old state Capitol.

That's a shame. Maybe all of the Vance and Aycock street signs should come down.
They would already have new names if NC had its Robert C. Byrd to name them after himself.
Oh yeah. He was in the Klan too.
By Charles Aycock?
What about Klu Klux Klan Grand Dragon Robert Byrd, whom they chose to be U.S. Senate Majority Leader?
What about the ENTIRE DEMOCRAT PARTY--the PRO-SLAVERY PARTY, to fight against which the ANTI-SLAVERY REPUBLICAN PARTY was founded--and remains today America's best advocate of civil rights and the American Dream (liberty, justice, and prosperity for all people).
The Democrat Party was the party of racism, slavery, corruption, and exploitation THEN--and it still is NOW!
WAKE UP, AMERICA!
If they took down every sign that had Aycock or Vance, 90% of the college students around Greensboro would never find their way to class again. Mmmm...UNCG wouldn’t award any more degrees in “Human Rights”.....not a bad way to go, I say.
Why should they be embarrassed? Chuck was doing things the Chicago way before the Chicago way was cool!
And yes, they will have to rename quite a few places. Street names, Government Buildings, College Dorms and other campus facilities. We might need some more stimulus to get those projects done...
This in a State where the Demoncrat governor wants to disband congressional elections so the reps won’t be under any pressure to do the will of the People....unbelievable!
Why not name it after Josephus Daniels, who started the White Supremacy Movement and helped reinstitute segregation as Wilson’s Secretary of the Navy?
After all, he is part of “The tradition of the Democratic Party being what it is”
...AND proudly host next year's RAT convention. This is gonna get good.
Shovel ready.
Interesting you posted that. Robert Byrd was actually from North Carolina, and that wasn’t even his real name.
