U.S. President Barack Obama was set to release Jonathan Pollard but his vice president thwarted the move, The New York Times has reported.

According to the report, Vice President Joe Biden met last week with 15 rabbis in Boca Raton, Florida, when he was asked by one of them why Pollard, who was convicted in 1986, was still in prison.

In response to the question Biden said, “President Obama was considering clemency, but I told him, ‘Over my dead body are we going to let him out before his time.’”

He added, “If it were up to me, he would stay in jail for life.”

I just heard this today too!
Wouldn’t put it past him. He needs to do something to get the Jews back on board.
Anyway, BTW, do you have anything coherent to explain why Pollard was given such a devastating sentence?
Life? Solitary?

My close friend in high school went into the Air Force and was going to be working near the nuclear missiles. I had to fill out a 5 page questionaire. This was back in the late 70’s. I believe they also came out questioned my father in person.

Nope, never on Shabbat. I don’t know of too many shuls that would let him walk through its doors at this point.

Leonore. Ich glaube, es ist schon lange her, dass er gefangen ist ?

Rocco. Es ist schon über zwei Jahre.

Leonore. Zwei Jahre, sagt Ihr ? Er muss ein grosser Verbrecher sein.

Rocco. Oder er muss grosse Feinde haben.

“Obama is trying to destroy the country, so he lets Pollard out to encourage other spies- who know he will be lenient with them”

Listen, let’s at least be fair. He’s already been in there a long, long time. Any potential spy who’d contemplate doing half the time of Polard would be deterred. There are plenty of good arguments for keeping Polard locked up, but that’s not one of them, and if Obama was looking to encourage spying, it’s about twenty years too late to use Polard for that purpose.

Is he circumcised? Just a stray thought I’d like to put in his head. Get your wiener trimmed. We Jews really like it when people do that. Look at what great friends we became with Hamor ben Shechem on that basis. Hee hee hee.

Exactly! So, how is it that Pollard got such a high level US govt clearance if his Stanford roommate knew way back when how he felt? How is it that it didn’t come up just in interviews with Pollard himself? It had to be fairly common knowledge among his circle of friends/colleagues.

In some ways, since 9/11 our security and govt positions with any sensitivity has become far tighter. A few years ago, my daughter was chosen for a sensitive govt job (as an employee of a govt contractor) and everyone was SHOCKED she couldn’t be hired because she couldn’t get the security level needed. She’d already worked at the Pentagon and was then serving as her local DAR’s Regent so no one foresaw any problem. Turns out, she was ‘rejected’ because she’d spent 2 years out of the previous 3 or 5 living overseas (in an allied country). But Pollard passed with flying colors. Go figure.

But if he lets Pollard out, it is a signal. One that is not good,

That’s all I am saying. In the spy game everything is nuanced in some way.

This is not as much about Pollard as it is a signal to everyone else to go WTF??

People are dead due to Pollard- he continued to help after being convincted so that is why he is stil breathing. Obama is not doing anything for the good of the country- only for the good of his liberal base, who hate America

If he did indeed do what you are saying, then yes, he is guilty, and deserves to be punished. But the photos of actual court-trial transcripts on the information site say something entirely different.

And, why did we release the Chinese and Russians who did far, far worse, and created actual compromises and damage?

And, then what should Israel do with the American spies they have caught?

This is not just another spy who got caught. This one is being treated far worse than others who have really caused us a problem-especially the Chinese. That is what has people concerned.

I think it was because his daddy was in intelligence, too. Just like Aldritch. Nepotism>screening data. (Screening data<ideal security profile)+Nepotism=high security clearance.

It's a quote from Fidelio (Beethoven's only opera). Essentially, it's an opera about political freedom.

For some reason, I think the German is stronger than the English.

Here, Leonore, disguised as the male Fidelio, is talking to the jailer Rocco. She suspects that her husband is being held in a secret part of the prison Rocco tends, so she knows how long he has been held there. The translation roughly is:

Leonore. It's been a long time that the prisoner has been here?

Rocco. It is already more than two years.

Leonore. Two Years!? He must be a be a very bad criminal.

Rocco. Or he must have very bad enemies!

Thanks! I didn't know that... (and I was here thinking that I'm so CULTURED!) You know how it's hard to keep up on all the scandals... and so the Rubashkin (kosher meat) one finally got on my nerves and so I read everything I could and talked to everyone I knew, and it's so clear that it's been an orchestrated set up.... Anti-Shechita PETA maniacs, labor union protestors, Linda Reade (what is WITH her?) Prosecutorial abuse... (do they get a cut of prison budgets or something?) I wonder if Gibson Guitars will be enough of a parallel to wake people up. Pollard's prosecution was before my political awareness time (or, to be precise: ...היתי עם ילדים קטנים בארץ, and I barely had time to open a newspaper!) So, like I think I mentioned above, it looks like the President may need to do something big to keep the Jewish vote, and Pollard may just have reached freedom. Anyway, I wonder who Pollard's incarceration is protecting?
