Perry on in-state tuition for illegals: How else were they supposed to pay for it?
Hotair ^ | 10/2/11 | Allahpundit

Matt Lewis says he’s improving on this issue. I guess, but that’s mainly because after you’ve tried to win over voters by calling them heartless, there’s really nowhere to go but up. A scene from New Hampshire this morning:

“We have, for decades, had a federal government that has absolutely failed in its constitutional duty to defend our border,” Perry said.

“I’m a governor. I don’t have the pleasure of standing on the stage and criticizing. I have to deal with these issues,” he later added.

Perry continued, “In 2001, we had this choice: Are we going to kick these children over to the curb and say you cannot have access to college? Because the fact of the matter is there’s no way they could pay the out-of-state tuition. And are we going to have them on the government dole over here because they’re not educated? Or are we going to have them in our institutions of higher learning, paying in state tuition, pursuing citizenship?”…

David Connors, the man who asked Perry the in-state tuition question, said he was satisfied with the governor’s answer.

Really? There are no jobs for illegals anywhere in Texas to earn tuition money? I was under the impression that there are quite a lot of jobs available to them, especially since Perry opposes e-Verify. This is the same sleight of hand he tried to use in the debate answer that got him in trouble, equating illegals’ opportunity to go to school in Texas with some sort of moral imperative among taxpayers to subsidize their education. (His wife, campaigning for him in Iowa, framed the choice as between tuition subsidies or welfare.) Somehow, the impoverished U.S. citizen from Mississippi is expected to pay his own way in Austin but the illegal who’s lived in Texas for three years gets a stipend from the locals. And not just in terms of lower tuition rates; apparently they qualify for financial aid too. It must be awfully confusing for Perry, as a “Texas Gaullist” and vocal champion of state sovereignty, to find that prioritizing state residency over national citizenship doesn’t play well with grassroots conservatives outside of Texas itself, but he’d better find clarity soon.

Here’s Romney’s new ad bludgeoning Perry with praise he once received from former Mexican President Vicente Fox. After you watch, read this amusing scolding (which notes some of Mitt’s own immigration heresies) from former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson, who seems genuinely surprised that Romney would pander so shamelessly on a divisive issue simply to destroy an opponent. That was the old, soulless Romney. The new, soulful Romney should be above that sort of thing. Right?

“If you’re ashamed of FR, I suggest you leave. I think you’d better check your facts. I don’t believe there was a state wide vote that was overwhelmingly approved, I believe the legislature approved it and Perry signed it.”

You’re correct. This line that he spews about the state of Texas wanting it, is a lie. This bill was covertly passed and the people had no idea until after the fact. We didn’t want it and still don’t. HB 1403 was passed into law at a time when the Democratic Party was about to lose its majority in the Texas Legislature and Republicans did not want the issues of affirmative action or illegal immigration brought up in an election year. During the floor debates, this bill was described as a technical measure that would help constituents and, in its original format, was designed to reward Mexican nationals only.

When my dad came to this country, legally and duly sponsored, at age 16 with his parents, he saw the kids going to college and decided he wanted that. So he worked 3 jobs to be able to afford it.

Does Perry think Mexicans are inferior and cant be expected to earn money? Isn’t that racist?

Please read my posts #109 and #113.

Those who advocate making it more rewarding to be in the U.S. illegally are the **cruel** people.

Those who are demanding strict enforcement and making it harder and more unpleasant to live here illegally are the conservatives with the **compassion**.

By the way,....have you ever read the children's book, “If You Give a Mouse A Cookie”? It applies to jonrick46,

why can’t folks accept that TX made its choice, and just leave it at that?”

Because Texas is "OUR" border state and Americans do not want it as a the "gateway state for illegal aliens" who further infilitrate the entire nation, which is what it is today.

Thus large scale infilitration across Open Borders creates demographic changes that result in demographic shifts that 'change a countries political power structures' in favor of the new demographic and against the existing people of a region or country.

Between illegals from Mexico and "other" undesirables, and the thousands of muslims in Texas ....the handwriting is on the wall what can be expected in the future...both Mexicans and Muslims are laying claim to Texas.

He beleives what he’s saying
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I believe him, too! I also **KNOW** from experience in working very very closely with our county's Spanish community that his immigration policies would make CRUEL practices even more CRUEL.

Please read my posts, #109 and #111.

Those advocating for strict enforcement of immigration law, and making it even tougher to live and work here illegally are the **compassionate** conservatives.

Perry with his proposals is being cluelessly CRUEL!

What’s the point of college for illegals if we’re supposed to punish employers for hiring them? oh wait...Perry doesn’t believe in doing that, either

He's toughened employer sanctions (HB 1196, for example) and toughened penalties against document/id fraud (HB 126). There's no driver's licenses for illegals either.

HB 1196 requires any business convicted under 8 USC Section 1324, to repay to the state with interest the full amount of any benefit including grants, loans, loan guarantees, enterprise/empowerment zone benefits, fee waivers, land price subsidies, tax refunds, tax rebates, tax abatements, matching funds, etc. within 120 days. Any level of gov't can sue such a company to recover funds, including court costs, and there's no statue of limitations.

Oh the usual suspects will show up and say Texas high employment rate is to blame for the illegals... of course, if illegals have all the jobs, why are they given aid and rewarded for criminal behavior? Pandering to Hispanic voters, that's why.

"Sending illegals back isn't cruel. Hard, yes. Inconvenient, yes. But cruel? ... No"

I look at it this way we are just doing for the Mexicans what the left wants for the Palestinians the 'RIGHT OF RETURN'. ;-)

Their parents have paid state sales tax, property tax or rented from folks paying property tax. In many case the have managed to get on the books so they can pay wage tax also.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Property tax on rental property? Well....What percentage of property tax is being paid when there are are SEVEN men sleeping in one bedroom and the apartment is Section-8 housing???

How much property tax is being paid on Section-8 housing with THREE families with six kids living in it?

Huh?

Yes,...I see this ALL THE TIME!!!

Please read my posts #109 and #111.

Why isn’t this a states right issue? And why can’t folks accept that TX made its choice, and just leave it at that?

So you're ok with New York, Massachusetts, etc. making gay marriage legal then?

You're ok with Oregon allowing euthanasia then?

Exactly right! It's either the feds responsibility or a states rights issues. How and the heck are we supposed to understand his supporters when Perry can't even articulate a logical position.

A bunch of apologist parrots.
