Egypt Fears Israel Plans to Seize Control of Sinai

Egyptian officials are expressing fears that Israel may seize control over the Sinai Peninsula.

The warning came from Egyptian Ambassador Yasser Othman, Cairo's representative to Ramallah, who told the Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency that recent remarks by Jerusalem officials indicate “the presence of an Israeli plan aimed at controlling the Sinai.”

Othman added, “We should be ready for the Israeli plan to take Sinai in the coming period.”

The Egyptian envoy's remarks followed interviews by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak on the eve of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana, in which both characterized the situation in Sinai as “troubling.” Both men expressed concern over the security threats that have escalated since the fall of former President Hosni Mubarak in the Tahrir Square Revolution in February.

“There are those seeking to use Sinai not merely as a staging area for attacks from Gaza, but who are seeking to use Gaza as a staging area for attacks from Sinai,” Netanyahu told reporters. “This is obviously a very troubling development.” He added at the time that while both Cairo and Washington D.C. shared Jerusalem's concerns, Israel is “taking action” on its side of the border to stymie any threat.

Now why would we want to do a thing like that? Just because Eilat has been attacked and our citizens killed, our embassy assaulted, and our flag repeatedly burned?

Go ahead. Threaten the Straight of Tiran. Obama will say mean things about us, and we'll run home crying, just like in '56 and '67.

Unless it has been cleaned up there is just the iron and steel from about 10,000 blown up Egyptian tanks and other vehicles.

Everything you said is TRUE, Egypt has done nothing but strike out at Israel since the crazies in the Mislim Brotherhood took over. Let em cry all they want, they deserve everything they get. As for Imam Obama... Egypt will get no help, nothing but WORDS from him!

Who is Egypt?
Are “their” fears something to take seriously or act on?

I haven’t read the Camp David accords but it seems to me that if Egypt has, or is on the verge of breaking the accords that Israel has every right to take back the Sinai.

Another day in the life of Israel that is supposed to be accepted as conveyed by dignitaries in Washington D.C.

IAF, kick some Arab a$$ and show who is righteously in charge as necessary!

No, I don't think so.

It's much more likely that the Egyptian leadership is trying that age-old trick of dictatorships: manufacture a foreign threat when things aren't going well at home.

The youth of Egypt have no work, no prospects. So better to get them all whipped up about an Israeli "invasion" than to have them start protesting against the new government.

Actually, under the terms of the 1976 accords I believe the U.S. would be obligated to intervene — even militarily — if either nation launches military action against the other.

Natural gas, oil, copper mines. But above all, control of the Straights of Tiran (access to Eilat and Aqaba ports), which is Israel’s only way into and from the Red Sea, and hence all eastern shipping since Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956, and barred all Israeli ships.

Jerusalem might be our heart, but Eilat is our cojones, and we can’t afford to let anyone hostile grab hold of either.

If military attacks continue on Israel, any attacking enemy territory they take, they should never ever relinquish.

When the Israelis held the Sinai before, they developed the tourist industry there to very profitable levels.

Israel returned the Sinai after the ‘56 war, the ‘67 war, and the ‘73 war. Israel is getting ready to abandon the Negev so a Palestinian state can be ‘contiguous’. Yup, they really lust after the Sinai!

There’ll be no abandoning the Negev and no Palestinian state, contiguous or otherwise. The fact that some so-called leaders are even considering that is more a reflection on their pretensions than any reliable prognosis of the end result.

If Egypt can/will not control Sinai, Israel might have to do so.
