Herman Cain pulls race card on Rick Perry
The American Thinker ^ | October 3, 2011 | Ralph Alter

Posted on 10/03/2011 11:09:54 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

The Washington Post's attempt to "macaca" Rick Perry generated a racialist response from a surprising source. Stephanie McCrummen's ham-handed effort to smear the Texas Governor relied on hearsay, anonymous cloudy recollections of events from nearly 30 years ago and interviews with black Texas residents recalling how they were treated in the Jim Crow 1950's. Ms. McCrummen is a reporter based in Nairobi: it would seem the Post could bring in someone based in Texas for this research, but perhaps the editors weren't looking for someone with local knowledge so much as someone willing to grind the ax against Governor Perry. Jazz Shaw at Hot Air accurately describes this screed as journalistic malpractice.

Governor Perry's name wasn't on the lease for this property until 1997, 14 years after the offensive term was removed from a boulder outside the property. Mr. Perry's record on matters of race is reportedly unassailable. Which brings us to the surprising source of racialist commentary about the Washington Post's pet rock.

[snip]

My respect for Herman Cain made his racialist remarks about Governor Perry particularly discouraging...

[snip]

Governor Perry never owned the property, and it appears that he suggested his father remove the offensive word as soon as he saw it. He didn't "leave it up there" at all. Perhaps Mr. Cain felt his need to establish bona fides with the black community superseded his responsibility to be respectful to his fellow candidate. Playing the race card was one of the last moves I would have expected from Herman Cain. His willingness to pile on the smearing of Governor Perry seems more like something we could expect from Barack Obama or Al Sharpton than a principled conservative....

“Except it’s not over if it’s still getting ink! “

I assure you that’s the last thing Perry wants.

When you keep hearing about a rock, eventually you want to see it, but I can’t find a picture of the rock.

Cain showed a poor judgement in criticising Perry without knowing of the facts, he took the bait in the form of compost article and ran with it, it shows poor form.

I do not support Perry for now but know you to be a fine poster and those attacking you personally are being jackasses

“When you keep hearing about a rock, eventually you want to see it”

that’s why I am saying it doesn’t help Perry to keep this story going and going. Perry fans will do it to get back at Cain but this is just what the MSM wants. It just distracts both of them from the real issues.

Buying it and changing the name is acceptable, but even entering such a park is just distasteful to me.

They did not buy it. Perry's father leased it. It was, and I believe still is owned by a non-profit children's organization.

However, upon entering while they had leased it for hunting, the Perry family is reported to have painted over the slur and to have turned the rock upside down to further cover the rock at which time grass and weeds basically grew to cover the rock almost entirely, requiring it to be dug up to see the paint that had covered the saying.

The only question I still am hearing is whether the rock was painted and turned in 2007 or 2008.

Another person who finds his respect for Cain affected by the way that Cain answered without acknowledging the facts.

This was the worst case of yellow journalism and Cain ran with it until it backfired on him.

And now Cain is trying to water down what he said, saying he meant it but he didn't mean it. Saying he won't back down on being upset with Perry but it's not Perry he's upset with. Saying Perry's insensitive but it is really the rock and not Perry that is insensitive. Typical Cain, trying to have things both ways.

Seeing what Cain is capable of and seeing his low-level political finesse, I can't wait to see some more of his backfires.

Oh yes this campaign season has been filled with “real” issues. If anything this story helps him by stopping the pile on the other candidates have been engaged in the last month. Perry wins this argument and even has Democrats rising to his defense which is making Cain and Romney look worse

I could be generous I suppose and agree to move on but no courtesy has been extended to perry even on issues he admitted fault so forget it.

“Oh yes this campaign season has been filled with “real” issues.”

yup! Cain was on Hannity tonight and they showed the tape of him debating Clinton. Many people were impressed by that but you can have your rock, I guess.

Cain has said that his comments were about the word on the rock not about the people who rented the place. This is so dead and over it is comical.

Agree totally. I fear that Cain really has made a huge error in jumping on this. I hope he can find some way to admit he was wrong, convincingly, unlike Bachmann with the vaccine/mental health, Perry with the college tuition, Mr.Newt with his ex-wife, Romney with healthcare, ...

You have a spot on analysis of most politicians though. When they say or do something wrong, it is hard many times for them to come to grips with what they did wrong or know how to appropriately go forward.

A politician’s strength can be seen by how they handle hurdles such as what you mentioned.

Since Cain has no real political experience other than mostly speeches and debates, it is unfortunate for us that we have Cain’s only political record of rights and wrongs through his campaign talk. However, for those who are interested in him and think he is worth putting in office to see how he does in politics, at least we have his words and media reactions to go on.

Cain’s first mistake was believing the Washington Post and ignoring the denials of the Perry camp.
His second mistake was continuing to call Perry
insensitive to black people and saying he “ finally “ got around to
painting the rock.
Cain was on ABC and FOX on Sunday and
spoke before microphones on the sidewalk .
His third mistake was denying his Sunday comments yesterday
and then declaring he was done with the story.
Once the story was coming back on Cain ,
he decided that he was done with it.
He didn’t have that problem on Sunday.
His fourth mistake was not acknowledging jumping the gun
and then apologizing to Perry .
Perry has apologized for his “ you don’t have a heart “ comment and admitted that his words were inappropriate.
Cain apologized to Muslims , more like groveled , IMHO , but,
he won’t apologize to Perry.
