Halloween decoration fools 911 caller
Salisbury Post (NC) ^ | Tuesday, October 04, 2011 12:00 AM | Nathan Hardin

A passing motorist on Organ Church Road called 911 Monday morning after seeing what appeared to be a bloody body pinned under a lawn mower.

But authorities quickly learned that the body was actually a graphic Halloween decoration placed near the road by a neighbor.

“It wasn’t too long after we dispatched a call that we found out it was a Halloween decoration,” said 911 center shift supervisor Autumn Davis.

The attention-grabbing gag, set up in the yard at 3475 Organ Church Road near Rockwell, wasn’t surrounded by any other Halloween decorations on Monday. The set-up depicts a body with bloodstained jeans trapped under the blades of a riding lawn mower, with a can of beer in its hand.

Chris Deaton, the man behind the mower, said this is his second year with the decoration, and said he did it because it got great reviews last year.

“It’s cool for a Halloween ornament,” he said.

Deaton said he hadn’t been contacted by authorities or passing motorists, but he didn’t think the decoration was offending anyone.

He got the idea from someone else’s yard, Deaton said, while traveling to the beach one year.

Last year, Deaton kept the mower closer to the house, so only those on his driveway could see it.

This year, though, he wanted to try it closer to the road.

Deaton said he hasn’t put any other Halloween decorations around the mower because he figures it’s going to get stolen and he doesn’t want anything else taken.

“That’s the only thing it’s good for,” Deaton said about the mower, which no longer has a working motor in it.

“It’s probably going to be stolen and sold for scrap metal,” he said.

Graphic apples and oranges? Now that's just wrong!

I know! All that inter-species fooling around is disgusting.

So let me ask you - are you okay with governmental interference in use of personal property when it comes to a display of graphic sex,

Stick to the subject, this is a halloween thread fer crying out loud! What the heck is with your apparent fixation with graphic sex? Sorry but that has no place or relevance in this discussion.....

THREAD HIJACK ALERT!

I don't have any idiotic neighbors

Too bad your neighbors can't say the same........

junk cars all over the yard, old refrigerators (with doors still on) sitting around outside.

Ahhhh, your true colors finally come out, anyone wishing to have fun with halloween is nothing but neighborhood trash..........Got It!

There’s a huge gigantic difference between a doll under a lawn mower and a depiction of graphic sex. And if you can’t see that difference seek professional help.

Through most of its history Halloween has been a grown up holiday. Halloween as kid fun was a relatively recent development, and has now passed on, the adults took it back. Probably the first step to that was the paranoia about tampered candy, that made it no fun for kids, but somebody is still going to enjoy the holiday.

There’s a huge gigantic difference between a doll under a lawn mower and a depiction of graphic sex.

And yet this looked real enough that someone called 911. This guy was stupid to put something like this out for all to see, particularly little kids. The article says he used to have where you could only see it if you were in his driveway. He should have left it there.

Obviously, you can't understand that some things are not appropriate for public display. I can only imagine what your yard must look like.

Yes, they are if this is what they consider "fun".

Stick to the subject

In other words, you don't want to answer the question because you know it will show the shaky ground on which your "opinion" is standing.

Sorry but that has no place or relevance in this discussion.

Really? After multiple posts to me you suddenly decide it is off topic? LOL

The use of private property for graphic displays of sexual activity is something that is normally licensed by local governments and doing it so that it is on a front lawn for public view would be considered a violation of local law.

Should it be? And if so, shouldn't displays depicting blood and gore also be "licensed"? If not, why not?

Should it be?

Not as far as I'm concerned.

And if so, shouldn't displays depicting blood and gore also be "licensed"? If not, why not?

See first answer.

And yet didn’t look real enough for that person to stop and render aid (hmmm contemplate that for a second, our “concerned citizen” that left without rendering any aid). And even if it looked real, even if it was Tom Savini real there’s still a massive difference between that and a depiction of graphic sex.

Obvious you can’t understand that a dude under a lawnmower has no relationship whatsoever to porn. Every time you throw around that graphic sex line (like a dozen times so far in the thread) you rely on fallacy. Logic shows it’s just silly Halloween display.

There could be a reason for that, but feel free to besmirch the person's integrity without grounds if you like.

And even if it looked real, even if it was Tom Savini real there’s still a massive difference between that and a depiction of graphic sex.

People in the neighborhood should not have to be subjected to either graphic sex or blood and gore in clear view in their neighbor's yard.

Obvious you can’t understand that a dude under a lawnmower has no relationship whatsoever to porn.

So you would obviously say that it was okay for a kid to view a movie full of blood and gore, but not a movie with sex in it. Gotcha.

And people wonder why kids are so screwed up these days.

I think it's mostly because of parents who have their butt cheeks clenched so tightly that if you stuck a lump of coal between them in a week they'd drop a diamond.

You know, like people who hate the way other people decorate their yards.

Didn’t besmirch anybody’s anything. Just pointed out they did not chose to render aid and had they they’d have quickly noticed it wasn’t a person.

There you go again with the silly equating of graphic sex and fake gore as equal creatures. Every time you do that you show your position is based on logical fallacy and bad ideas. It’s just red dye, no relationship at all to graphic sex. Come up with an argument that doesn’t equate the two.

Ever watched a Tom and Jerry cartoon? Blood and gore has been a part of kids’ entertainment for a long long time. Ain’t no “these days” about it.

I saw last year around Christmas, one house that had taken two lighted reindeer decorations and arranged them so it looked like they were engaged in flagrante delicto.

I wonder how long they were allowed to keep that up.
