Federal Employment Grows Despite Downturn

In the midst of the current economic downturn, there is one group that seems to be prospering: public employees. While the private sector is struggling to grow and create new jobs, federal government jobs are doing quite well.

This week’s chart by Mercatus Center Scholar Veronique de Rugy shows the growing number of federal government employees. Using the latest data for annual government employment from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the chart shows that relentless growth in public sector employment largely overshadows private sector employment.

In 2010, there were 22,482,000 government employees. That’s an increase of 1,692,000 employees since 2000. During the examined time period, public employment has grown at an average rate of 0.8% each year—in contrast to the -0.3% average annual rate of private employment decline. From 2000 to 2010, the plummeting employment has been concentrated in the private sector. A total of 3,658,000 private sector jobs have been lost. All the while, public employment continues to increase.

I’m SO depressed! And I’m not easily depressed - or defeated - nor am I a defeatist!

I’m just SO unhappy with the current Pres__ent, and equally as depressed over what we in the GOP have to offer as candidates!

I’m more of a ‘Republitarian’ (which is a Libertarian without all the dope smoking, LOL!) and Ron Paul doesn’t appeal to me in the least...

Oh, H3ll! I was HOPING it wasn’t going to come to this, but I think it’s time for ME to run for President, LOL!

Are you saying that govt employees that work in the DoD, don’t produce anything and don’t require training? How do you think things get done in the military, like installing communications systems, defense systems, shipboard installations? You think contractors just walk up to aircraft carriers and start putting in new systems? You think none of that requires training?

"Are you saying that govt employees that work in the DoD, don’t produce anything and don’t require training?"

ALL of that could be out-sourced to the private sector, and, the pay and benefits costs would be reduced dramatically.

Working for the gubmint is a way to avoid competitive jobs in the private sector.Taxpayers are tired of funding over-staffed, under-worked, over-paid government employment. We cant' afford it at all.

I don’t link. And you are free to believe any lie you wish. Should you truly care about the truth there are any number of sources which can verify what I have said. The annual “Economic Report of the President” shows federal employment figures. They aren’t hidden.
