CBS Poll: Most want taxes on millionaires increased
CBS News ^ | 10/04/2011 | Brian Montopoli

CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus and Anthony Salvanto

Most Americans believe that taxes on millionaires should be increased in order to reduce the deficit, according to a new CBS News poll.

Sixty-four percent of Americans said they believe those making a million dollars or more in taxes should pay more. Thirty percent said taxes on such individuals should not be increased. Democrats were extremely likely to support such an increase (83 percent did so), and independents also supported it, 65 percent to 28 percent. On the other side, 54 percent of Republicans opposed such an increase, while 40 percent supported it.

President Obama has proposed a tax increase on those making a million dollars per year or more as part of his deficit reduction plan - the so-called "Buffett Rule" - an idea Republicans deride as "class warfare."

Republicans often argue that increasing taxes on the wealthy will impact job creation. But the new CBS News poll finds that just 18 percent of Americans agree. More - 25 percent - say the increase will actually help job creation. A slim majority - 51 percent - say it will have little impact.

Still, there are mixed signals: Asked the most effective way for the government to get the economy moving, nearly half (47 percent) chose cutting taxes to encourage investment. Fewer - 37 percent - preferred spending more money to create jobs. A majority of Republicans called for tax cuts while a majority of Democrats called for spending to create jobs.

Views of government:

Americans have a highly negative view of the role the government plays in their lives.

RE: I agree with Mr. Koch.

You do realize that Charles and his brother are under attack by the press for some alleged illegal business they are doing with Iran.

Why the half measures?

While we’re at it, we should enact laws that provide for the scarification of the beautiful, and the amputation of the limbs of the athletic.

This really should be followed by lobotomies for everyone with a higher than average IQ and/or advanced degrees.

And, for goodness’ sake, why is it that you feel you have the right to own a car that goes faster than mine!

Should women with a refined fashion sense be allowed to wear more beautiful outfits than other women?

No, of course not!

And why is it that the government sits idly by and allows those with a gift for the use of the language to become successful writers???

That is clearly unfair!

The government I’m looking for would not only rob the rich, it would, in fact, see to it that everyone in America is just as stupid as I am; just as ugly as I am; just as spastic as I am; just as untalented as I am.

It’s the only way to be fair.

Ask this question:

If increasing taxes on the rich might threaten your job, would you still be in favor of it?

My point is taking money out of the economy to put back into the economy does nothing good for the economy.
If instead money is used to pay people for real work (as opposed to gov't make-work programs or outright handouts) then something of value is created.
THAT is good for the economy.
Economy is more than moving money around. It has a purpose. Leftists don't get that.

I would bet the answer would be the same, as the ones who would answer this will not hear all the question. All they will hear is: Do you support raising taxes on 50% of the population.........

Raytheon sold airport radar sets to Iran through its Canadian subsidary as late as 1995.

Actually, there are already excise taxes on property (in Massachusetts, registered cars) as well as property taxes. One argument against capital “gains” taxes is that they are largely taxes on inflation. If I own a candy store which I purchased for $50,000 in 1970 and sell it for $1,050,000 in Januart 2011, guess what? I “made” a million dollars in “capital gains” even though the $50,000 in 1970 could buy over 1400 ounces of gold, while the $1,050,000 in 2011 would only buy about 750 ounces of the yellow metal. In other words, the value of my asset relative to gold was half as much, but I would wind up forking over a big share of it to the government as “capital gains”.

Please try these questions:
Should taxes on reporters be increased?
Should taxes on politicians be increased?
Should taxes on movie stars be increased?

I’d be shocked if the percentages weren’t higher than on millionaires.

Amazing poll, since approximately 98% of the people that follow CBS don't pay taxes and only 64% of them feel “millionaires" should pay taxes then only 64% of deadbeats want to raise taxes.
