I should have said, trumped up controversy about Cain and Perry.

They're going after both candidates, and have succeeded in one fell swoop.

I'm not falling for it. I hope you think it over more thoroughly and don't fall for it either.

If you haven’t heard that word in ten years, that’s a pretty good thing.

Yeah, it's definitely not accepted down here as the everyday language. No republican politician would ever get elected down here if they said that in public. Democrats and Robert "Sheets" Byrd can get away with that nonsense.

That being said, Gov. Perry did not use it, did not paint it on the rock, and in fact appears to have taken steps to remove it from being visible.

Well said.

You have to know they know. If not from here, than from Rush, Sean, Mark, etc. They simply don’t care. It makes them feel ever so much better about themselves that they are “sensitive” and Perry isn’t. They get to get back at him for his “heartless” comment. As tempting as that is, it’s wrong.

I'll clarify this by saying that I like both Perry and Cain, and would vote for either of them without holding my nose.

You are living proof that I’m so glad to be a damned Yankee and not a Texan.

That elitist and ridiculous. I have nothing against New York City or New Jersey outside of voting patterns (much like my own county) but there are as many racial ghosts there as their are in Texas (which in my experience is one of the most tolerant states and fairly race-neutral) or anywhere else. Both ways.

Was it a bad name for the flowers? Yes. Blaming Texas as a whole for it is no different for blaming all of New York City for four Americans of Italian ancestry for jumping a black individual for wandering into the wrong neighborhood, or for Al Sharpton's riots, or for exporting the last major KKK leader in Robert Miles who moved about 40 miles from me.

There's good people and bad people.

Agreed, Marlowe

Romney was in the Bishopric and was a Stake President in an organization that was inherently racist. He was very high up in the organization and he continues to this day as a member in high standing.

This dog just ain’t gonna hunt folks. The media will cream him!

Newt, who consorted with the left to get his name in the news (repeatedly), over Cain who has said something you don't like about insensitivity to a racist name? Newt, who clearly lacks moral character over Cain who has it?

I can't argue with your comments about Newt. My reasoning is that we know Newt's warts...not so Cain's.

Warts and all, I think Newt is the smartest, most qualified candidate in the mix. His baggage is a shame, IMO.

As far as "insensitive" ...I think to play the race card is as bad as being a racist. It's a 2-way st. and short-sighted Cain jumped to play the race card to smear Perry when nothing was there...a character flaw, IMO. ( Not you because you didn't play the race card)

My theory is that Cain is running to be Romney's running mate. Just watch!!!!

I agree, but repeat that Cain didn't do it. He stated his opinion, which happens to be the same as mine - and I'm white as the driven snow. But I've said all that before. :)

Newt has baggage coming out the wazoo. Known or unknown, bad is bad, and Newt's smarts don't make up for his dumbs. He's completely out of the Presidential picture for me.

Cain may well be running for VP, and actually, if you listened to Hannity last night, you heard Ann Coulter say she liked that ticket (no comment about that. ;).

You also, if you listened to Cain on Hannity, heard that he doesn't have a race-baiting bone in his body.

The matter is settled.

I have found the 'n' word offensive for decades because it IS offensive. The WaPo has absolutely nothing to do with it

The WaPo has EVERYTHING to do with it! The story was fabricated and published with only anonymous sources...no proof of what the rock even looks like.

Rick Perry had nothing to do with the rock!..except he hunted there years ago. Cain bit hook, line and sinker when he was asked about it and spewed off when he should have said he needed nore info before speaking. Because that would have been the RIGHT think to do. But, he went after Perry being "insensitive."

And it bit Cain in the butt.

I think the fix is in. Romney is going to get the nomination by default.

Hang in there we still have time. Perry is under attack from all sides, but if he improves just a little bit in the "debates" his support will jump up again.

In 1978 the Mormon Church was still teaching that Blacks were black because they were cursed by God and that Hispanics were dark because they were cursed by God. Toss in a few quotes from Brigham Young and Romney will be history within 2 weeks of the time he gets the nomination. The media will just pretend they are only now learning this stuff.

A perfect example of why he can't be the nominee. I figured it would be nonstop documentaries on polygamy, but your analysis is even tougher to overcome.

I don't know if you saw it but Perry and Huntsman refused to go on a Univision debate because of some garbage they are threatening Rubio with. Now that's the way you deal with this garbage, confront the accusers and back up your fellow party member. Not the behavior modeled by Cain or Romney.

I had not even thought about this until PM's earlier post. I have yet to hear Romney condemn his church for any of this.

Cain on Hannity, heard that he doesn't have a race-baiting bone in his body.

Actions speak louder than words.

The WaPo has EVERYTHING to do with it!

I'm going to assume that you're not deliberately misinterpreting what I said (please read my post again), and go from there.

It only 'bit Cain in the butt' because people don't have critical thinking skills.

I do. I have the facts from both sides and I didn't fall for it.

The game was to hurt both Perry and Cain. Nothing about the story should have hurt either. If it swayed your opinion of Cain, you fell for the WaPo ploy.

Thanks so much GOPyouth for posting the exact quotes:

“Since Gov. Perry has been going there for years to hunt, I think that it shows a lack of sensitivity for a long time of not taking that word off of that rock and renaming the place." - Herman Cain

When told that the rock was painted over and turned over, Cain replied, “But how long ago was it painted over? So I’m still saying that it is a sign of insensitivity."

These statements, along with the fact that he took the bait and responded to it are what have made people mad.

And yes, this is exactly what changed my mind about Cain.

Kaslin, you're correct that the Washington (com)Post and Armanpour were playing the race card, but more importantly, they were offering the race card to Cain--which he enthusiastically then played himself. He could have refused it in any number of gracious and/or witty ways--but he chose to play it. We already have one race-baiter in the WH; I can't see the advantage of installing another. I was deeply disappointed in how he handled this, and will not support Cain.

I sent you "a letter."

It only 'bit Cain in the butt' because people don't have critical thinking skills.

In this case, I think Cain was the one who came up short...leaped before he looked.

Again, I was surprised and disappointed in his response. He has tried to back tract so I think he knows he screwed up.

“Once Romney gets the nomination, the Mormon History issue will raise it's ugly head and Romney will get to experience first hand the Palin/Perry treatment that the media has been holding in reserve for him.”

I don't support Romney. However, you should realize that ANY candidate the Republicans nominate will be repeatedly portrayed as a racist, a right wing nut, uncaring, greedy, stupid and wanting to starve/kill old people. What you say the MSM will do to Romney is correct, but realize they will do the same or worse to any Republican candidate

There is no perfect candidate. There is no candidate the MSM will not viciously attack. There is no candidate who will not be portrayed as a racist over and over again.

The important thing is fixing our country and our economy after the Democrats have come close to destroying it. We need to focus on that.

At the very worst, Cain didn't say everything exactly as some would want him to say things. He's going to say a million words during this campaign, and he'll probably say some things people don't like again. That's the essence of a campaign.

The hullaballoo over what he said, and some of the comments on this thread are ludicrous.

I reacted the same way when people said Perry was 'toast' because he wandered around inarticulately in his comments about Romney during the last debate.

Some folks need to take a deep breath and start thinking.

There is nothing to be 'disappointed' in Cain about.

The words were painted over, and the rock itself was reportedly turned over. Someone had to actually turn over the rocks on the place, then carefully examine the bottom of that one to find this. Talk about muckracking. Moreover, and please remember this-—Perry did not write the words.
