Most support gays serving openly in military, says CBS News poll
CBS News ^ | October 4, 2011 | Lucy Madison

Just a few weeks after the implementation of the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," a majority of Americans say they support gays and lesbians serving openly in the military, according to a new CBS News poll.

According to the poll, 68 percent of Americans said they support gay and lesbians' rights to serve openly. Fifty percent said they "strongly" favored the idea.

Moreover, although many national Republicans leaders were against the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," more Republicans surveyed favor the idea of allowing gays and lesbians to serve in the armed forces openly than oppose it.

The poll shows that 48 percent of Republicans overall think gays and lesbians should be able to serve openly; 28 percent of those people said they favored the idea strongly.

Meanwhile, 41 percent of all Republicans opposed allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly- twelve percent of whom opposed the idea strongly, and 29 percent of whom opposed it only somewhat.

The numbers reflect little change in public sentiment since Congress repealed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in December 2010. Then, 50 percent of Republicans supported allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly, as did 69 percent of Americans overall, according to a CBS News poll.

Repeal of the 1993 law, which said gays could serve only if they kept their sexual orientations private, became official on September 20, 2011.

Why don´t they pole actual veterans?
Not a smart idea, it's not the veterans that are homos, they might want to try POLLING the veterans though.

The slow destruction of the nation’s military is nothing less than an act of collective suicide.

I don’t care what man says, God says “you shall not all the dog inside your camp”. He is not talking about canines, but those that emulate the doggy style. God knows man, if man were wise, he would know himself. Find me a group of people that hate ice cream, put them in a situation where ice cream is served aplenty, without limit, and wait until the “habit” of eating ice cream is cultivated. Not all will like “ice cream”, but more and more will begin to like it, and maybe even try it once or twice. You keep the fags out of your encampment, for the same reason you keep thieves, liars and adulterers out, because they bring trouble, and a general loosening of discipline.

Or Some recruit gets raped by her butch drill instructor, butch CO, butch platoon sergeant, etc... It works both ways.

Obviously, any female recruit who objects to being raped by her butch Drill Instructor is a detriment to unit cohesiveness and must be drummed out of the military.

And then charged with a hate crime.

So, you're right, it does work both ways.

“a majority of Americans say they support gays and lesbians serving openly in the military,”

LIE.

I’m very concerned for our troops. Because I will bet my house that if someone is sexually harassed by a “gay” person in the military it will be swept under the rug and the victim will be punished. Political correctness will be the ruin of the US military... Someone had to have concerns about Nidal Hasan, but that was swept under the rug, too.

Praying for our troops.

While it matters little what we veterans and civilians think of it, it matters more what the active duty, sharing a room/shower with a fag soldier thinks of it....we’ve lost the nation on the issue.

The perverts got into the schools and we couldn’t fight ‘em. They poisoned our childrens’ minds. Those children are now voting age.

Gay marriage nationwide within ten years guaranteed. The only way to stop it would be to have state, local and federal government completely disengage from the marriage business.

Unfortunately my fellow Christians like having to get government permission to wed, so I don’t see that happening. As a result, get used to gay marriage because it’s coming to a state near you.

I believe this. Last summer I worked as a subcontractor in K-Marts. In every employee lounge was a TV set to daytime TV. It was pro-homo propaganda every freakin’ day. The employees sat there like mind numbed robots soaking it all in.

There is only one group of respondents that matter in this: active duty military whose duties at times REQUIRE VERY close contact with their comrades. - think foxholes, military transport situations, barracks, boom operator instructors(if AF), missile silos, many Navy jobs on small boats/subs, etc. I know that I, personally, would have been distracted from my duties if I had in my mind that the guy next to me was getting pleasure by my contact with him, and such distraction could have resulted in bad things. It is especially true that such close quarters are often exacerbated during periods of high-stress activities (again, foxholes, midair refueling, etc.) and that is NOT when a person can afford distraction.

All polls of civilians/politicians is totally unimportant. Polls of retired/former military have some value: perhaps their recognition of the situations that they were in at one time or another during their career outweigh their lack of being in touch with “current social mores”. Polls of current, high-contact military should be given the most credence.

They have too many polls now. Every freaking week there is a new poll out.

The fake poll they sent out didn’t mean sqaut as they had already made a decision to end DADT anyway.

If you are connected with any groups of youths, you would understand this and not be surprised or doubting.

Like it or not, we’ve been telling our school children for 30 years now that discrimination is wrong, and for at least the last 10 years that this includes gays and lesbians.

Meanwhile, since DADT was implemented, there has been no real effort to explain to the public any reasons WHY gays and lesbians would disrupt the military. And DADT allowed gays and lesbians to populate the military.

So now, the question cannot be “do gays and lesbians destroy the military — they’ve been serving for 16 years, and our military seems to be in pretty good shape. The argument instead has to be “KNOWING someone is gay or lesbian will disrupt the military.

But the military is largely a young person’s profession. And the young people have grown up in a world where gays and lesbians are public. They not only know gays and lesbians, they KNOW that they know gays and lesbians, and are friends with them, and simply don’t see the problem.

We MIGHT, if we can stay focused, articulate the problems, and stand our ground, be able to stave off gay marriage. And we SHOULD fight so that congress HAS to vote to legalize gays in the military, rather than pulling this executive order stuff.

But the fight is over. When our best and brightest hopes for President have apparent issue with gays in the military OTHER than to ensure that it doesn’t disrupt things, how can we hope to turn this loss back?

And the truth is, if we can’t win it, but we fight it, and we fight with dire predictions of horror, and they do NOT come true, it will just destroy our credibility in the fight that matters most, that of Gay Marriage.

I think we have to fight everything not just homo marriage. If we concede one inch they will keep up the pressure.

I don’t know too many young people who are cool with the homo idea.

that’s a problem there

anyone who turns down a pass by a gay troop will be labled “homophobic” and subjected to the worst possible coercion and harassment. Far worse if it is a young troop being harassed by a superior

and if a lavender mafia builds among the military that preys on the young and ridicules the straight, and our spineless PC upper ranks do nothing about it (as shown in the case of the FT Hood shooter who was tolerated beyond all reasonable comprehension)
