CCHD 2010 - 2011 Grants Report

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Background

For a number of years, there has been concern with the grants that CCHD distributes. There have been specific complaints that a significant portion of the grants have been given to organizations working in direct contradiction to Church teaching.

In 2009, American Life League joined with several other concerned organizations to form the Reform CCHD Now Coalition. In March of 2010, the coalition sent a report on CCHD to each bishop, showing that, in 2009–2010, 51 out of 237 groups receiving CCHD funding either directly or through coalition membership promoted abortion, birth control, homosexuality, and/or Marxism. Thus, 21% of the groups funded by CCHD were involved in such work.

As a result of this activity, CCHD conducted an internal effort to revamp its grant process and ensure that all grantees adhered to strict guidelines. The results were published in a CCHD Renewal Document.

2010–2011 Grantees

In January, 2011, CCHD published its list of 2010-2011 grantees. At that time, American Life League reviewed the list and was disappointed to see that many of the offending organizations were still on the list and, in fact, others have been added.

The attached report documents that, of the 218 organizations funded by CCHD, 14 are directly involved in activities contrary to Church teaching and 40 are actively involved in coalitions with such activities. Thus, 54 groups (24%) funded by CCHD are involved in anti-Catholic work.

The number, and percentage, of offending organizations has actually INCREASED in the last year —from 51 to 54 groups and from 21% to 24%.

These 54 organizations received a total of $1,863,000 of the $7,608,000 distributed in CCHD grants in 2010-2011.

Our bishops have taken criticism of CCHD to heart and declared: "To hell with you, we're going to keep feeding the statist, collectivist monster, and you can't stop us, no matter how much evidence you provide."

I only give directly to my parish and I may soon pick and choose projects and only donate to them.

I have been a devout practicing catholic all my life. Consider myself theologically educated. Rabid conservative. Worked for and with two separate bishops for years. Served on many catholic boards and councils. I stopped financial contributions to any and all special Sunday collections 30 years ago. Until Catholics stop funding social justice programs, the USCCB will continue their leftists agenda. Money talks in our beautiful but broken church.

Bless you! Unfortunately, you are in the miniscule minority. When will the pew-sitters wake up?

This kind of news is very disturbing. It is bad because many good charities can be affected by people simply withdrawing from donating to any Catholic Charity because it might have an offending dimension.

I have stopped donating to CCHD, but continue to donate to all others, even those with similar names. But I now wonder how many others may be corrupt.

Could the corruption of CCHD result in a convenient excuse to stop giving to charities altogether, especially in hard economic times when charities need more donations?

Essentially all of the USCCB-sponsored programs are corrupt, and most diocese-sponsored programs (e.g. Catholic Stewardship Appeal)have at least an element of corruption. All you have to do is dig a little bit to find the corruption, but the sheeple are too lazy and apathetic to fight the system.

I went to a mission retreat two weeks ago and the facilitator was talking about how many thousands of times per day the host was lifted up 24/7 all around the world. I’m not worried. God is in control.

Our pastor just recently gave the most thorough and enjoyable accounting to the parish about how our money was spent telling us emphatically that every dime has to be accounted for and that it is his job to be the steward and make sure it is spent well. I had never seen or heard such a wonderful explanation. He made some comment about people telling him that he should go to Washington but that he wanted to go to heaven and wasn’t sure that it would be compatible. I love this man.

Catholic University gave a short tour on Tuesday to Hilda Solis, President Barack Obama's Catholic secretary of labor, (Solis has spent much of her political career zealously advocating legalized abortion). Catholic University is receiving $4.2 million in grants from the government.

I wonder whether or not the corruption in CCHD and others are somehow related to the receipt of government monies? Could it be the doling out of donations to questionable groups is simply to demonstrate a willingness to cooperate with vile government policies in order to receive monies? Remember Notre Dame inviting President Obama to receive an honorary degree? What was that all about, if not related to receiving government dollars?

I am not a "devote" Catholic although I wish I was....I just am so tuned out because of the leftist swing that some Catholic "leaders" have taken.....

we have an annual pre Christmas collection to be distributed locally to the needy....that's about all I do.....we give to Catholic Relief Services as well, once a year...

but these other giant collections....no......

I meant "devout" of course....lol....

the other thing we do is support my old Catholic grade school and one local very poor grade school that has a very conservative Catholic based education....I'd rather give to something I know then to these giant sucking entities....

I’ve read articles in the Wanderer that directly tie the government grants to the corruption, but I think the problem is much deeper than that. Sad to say, a significant number of our bishops are actively working for the “other team”.

I keep focusing on the Eucharist and seeking a celebrant/congregation that speaks to me. I think I found it. I know a friend of mine however who lived for awhile in the northwest who couldn’t find either until they moved back to the midwest.

Not uncommon. But the Midwest isn’t necessarily an oasis. In the Milwaukee diocese, 135 priests signed a document opposing traditional marriage.

I never could understand how anything east of the Mississippi could be called the midwest. I consider the west to start at about Wichita KS and maybe the line is a bit further east as you travel south so that most of Oklahoma and Texas could be considered west. But I’m totally midwestern here in KCMO.

It all gets back to the 1800’s when Kansas City was in the “West”. That made Milwaukee, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh the Midwest.
