House Republican says Norquist paralyzing Congress

top House Republican on Tuesday attacked conservative tax activist Grover Norquist in a blistering floor speech, saying his no-taxes pledge has "paralyzed" Congress from tackling the deficit.

In a short but powerful speech, Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., laid out a remarkable indictment against one of the most powerful figures in conservative politics. He cited Norquist's ties to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, as well as charges that Norquist was associated with two terrorist financiers. Wolf also raised Norquist's lobbying for Fannie Mae and the Internet gambling sector, and his reported support for moving Guantanamo Bay detainees to the United States.

"Simply put, I believe Mr. Norquist is connected with, or has profited from, a number of unsavory people and groups out of the mainstream," Wolf said.

In an interview, Norquist dismissed Wolf's remarks as a "hissy fit."

Norquist does his thing and Congress does its thing.

Only idiots think Norquist gives orders to Congress.

Obviously Norquist opposes new taxes, and at the moment a majority of the House and probably the Senate also opposes new taxes.

Years ago I read a book (I believe the title was Coup D’Etat).

The author listed some of the reasons why a government is overthrown. You would not be surprised to hear one was over taxation.

He pointed out there is no clear point when the population turns to violence against their government when they are over taxed, but does point out there is a point. A wise government tries to stay below that point.

A stupid government does not care and will keep raising taxes regardless of what the population says. Stupid governments do not stay in power long (relatively speaking).

We are not in our current financial mess today because of lack of money going into the treasury. It is because our government is spending more money than it has coming in.

There are two solutions to this.

1. Raise Taxes (which the progressives wants)
2. Cut spending (which the Tea Party wants)

The progressives have big media, the Democrats, the unions, the welfare people, the universities and so on, on their side. A very powerful group.

The tea party has history on their side. They, the Tea Party, will eventually win because history indicates that progressive can not win.

The problem for us is how badly will our nation be hurt before the progressives are swept away into the dust bin of history?

The old Soviet Union provides some hope. They, unlike us, did not have a long history of capitalism, but they picked it up quickly enough.

(As a side note, it is interesting to see that religion is making a comeback in the old Soviet Union as well). This tells me a powerful government can keep someone from talking about their religion, but it can not change what is in a person’s heart.)

Three simple steps; Eliminate baseline budgeting; eliminate cabinet departments; RIF the bureaucrats. Nothing else will do the job.
To enhance the effect, decentralize the remaining departments to locations Ivy Leaguers hate, that is, towns without gay bars and ballet.

If he’s a “Top House Republican” why don’t I know who he is?

You are correct. The candidate that runs on changing the budget process to simply a zero-based budgeting model making each department justify their programs and make a case for increases each year would win in a massive landslide in 2012.

Mr. Wolf is exactly that, in sheep’s clothing. In other words, a RINO.

There are two solutions to this.

1. Raise Taxes (which the progressives wants)
2. Cut spending (which the Tea Party wants)

The problem is, they can't do #1. They can raise the rates, but the revenue won't increase. Revenue will stay at about 19-20% of GDP max, as it has in recent history. The only way to raise revenue is to increase GDP, and not artificially with increased government spending. The only way to grow GDP is to cut taxes, decrease regulations and let the private sector do what it does unencumbered by government. But, they won't do that. Neither party is willing to decrease the size or power of government, so #2 is out and doing the things that would actually result in #1 are out. So, the deficit will continue to grow, until it either collapses or enough people recognize the problem and vote out politicians and put in people like the Tea partiers in large enough numbers to actually have some effect. I predict the former.

What a half assed comment. I don't care for Norquist on many issues, but on taxes, he's dead on.

Cut spending, then have tax reform, with no increases.

Frank Wolf, heh.. Says he himself doesn’t support tax increases but wants them on the table.
I have little use for Norquist, but Wolf is a liar and a scumbag.
