According to AAA, the arresting officer informed her the children would have to go to social services if she couldn't find someone to watch them while she was driven to jail. The mother, though, was able to convince a teacher to watch the children.

The tow truck probably hadn’t gotten over there yet to remove the vehicle, or the second driver would have had to fork over more hundreds of dollars to get the car back. Then file an insurance claim over the inevitable towing damage.

It's really simple: one measure of cops' performance is the number of arrests they make. An expired-tag arrest is an arrest. It has the benefit that a person being arrested for expired registration is less likely to violently resist arrest than some others. It also allows improvement the city's racial statistics, to show that they arrest white folks too.

Sad commentary on the state of things today. Once, in Washington state, many years ago, I did get pulled over with an expired tag (only a month, and I admit I was much younger and stupid), and the cop let me go with a warning. Told me I’d better get myself over to the Department of Licensing post haste.
On the bright side, at least they’re only putting people in jail for it. I see a time coming when they’ll use SWAT teams to pull you out of your car with its expired tabs, then go back to your house and shoot your dog for good measure. :)
More and more, the law is only being applied to the basically law-abiding. Those who choose to live outside the law go their merry way, while woe betide the poor slob who tries t0 follow the law to the letter, but slips up on some minor detail.
The law abiding person will cooperate with officers and readily pay whatever fine is levied. The lawless, by contrast, will make no end of a fuss, and then fail to pay any fines. Often they require incarceration, at tremendous expense. Where is the profit in that?
The PD can report that they solve X per cent of their arresting crimes. DC is a piss hole what with Marion Barry. Every cop would have known about his cocaine habits. He needed protection. The tag issue is all about per cents of solved crimes.
Agreed. Thieves, drug dealers and welfare fraud - not worth the effort. Selling your garden produce without a license or have old car tags, go to jail. Tax evading illegal aliens, legal protection, though they are driving without insurance or valid licenses and often drunk.

Sometimes it is difficult to respect some police officers. I hate to say that, but when they pull crap like this it is scary.
I wonder if they arrest illegal aliens as quickly?

This will be the second time I missed. The first time I was stopped for an expired sticker I had to show the nice cop (there are some) my registration. He saw the NEW sticker on the card, accepted it, removed the sticker and actually put it on the plate in the rear of the car. Said, “have a nice day” and went on his way.
Beltway Disease affects more than just elected officials, huh? It’s more contagious than I thought. Perhaps I should rethink the family vacation and plan to go someplace less disease-ridden.
If this is a new effort by the cops it is because the DC leadership has told them to do so.

I thought Ayn Rand was overstating her case. It turns out she was exactly right or perhaps even understating the evil of the government liberals are creating.
I'm not saying this is right by any means, but I have to wonder how many people realize they create a legal contract with the State when they put State tags on their vehicles.

I think that she knew her villains well; I’ve met many like them in my life, all too many. It’s her heroes that are unrealistically portrayed.
We’re going to have to be our own heroes if we want to survive as free people; there is no John Galt, no Hank Rearden, no Ragnar or Francisco; there’s just us.
Add the high car theft rate, and anyone can understand why auto insurance is as expensive here as it is.
I know people here in PA who have forgotten to put their new sticker on but who drove for months and months with no problem.
Unless they were unfortunate enough to drive through one particular borough south of Pittsburgh, where the local cops lie in wait all day to ticket people like this in order to fund their pension.
I don't know about that. Just being "us", we may find that we are John Galt and the others.
