The news hit me in the gut. I couldn’t believe I was seeing those few numbers, communicating his passing, beneath his photo: 1955-2011. Steve Jobs has, literally, changed the world.

An excellent book to read about adoptions and how they can change lives is "Scattered Siblings." Very thoughtful and emotional.

To think of the millions of jobs that this man and Bill Gates created by their sweat is amazing . . . the government can't create jobs . . .

Her name is Joanne Schiebel. In 1954, she was a young unmarried college student who discovered that she was pregnant. In the 1950s, her options were limited. She could have had an abortion – but the procedure was both dangerous and illegal. She could have gotten married, but she wasn’t ready and didn’t want to interrupt her education. Joanne opted, instead, to give birth to the baby and put it up for adoption. And so it was that in 1955, a California couple named Paul and Clara Jobs adopted a baby boy, born out of wedlock, that they named Steven. We know him today…as Steve Jobs. . . . But: imagine if that life had never happened.

I am not a Catholic so I don’t believe in “Repent and all is forgiven.” If that were the case then we wouldn’t need any jails, all the criminals would repent.

Steve Jobs deserved jail time for lying in court and failing to provide child support. If he tried that in this age he would have. His daughter only lived with him a few years in her final teenage years, living on welfare the rest of the time. What a guy.

Repent doesn't just mean you're sorry. It means you CHANGE, also, and never do those rotten things you did before.

I'm very much pro-life and this is a nice story, but I have a very basic question:

Did Steve Jobs mother ever really consider having an abortion?

What I've read didn't say, and if we get the story because his unmarried mother might have had an abortion, then maybe people are stretching it too much. That might have could be applied to every living person.

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

1950’s??? probably not - or it would have been illegal/back alley. More stigma then.

Bio mother has a story to tell - hope she does. Watch for a book or movie.

His denial of his bio child is disturbing - wonder how his learning that he was adopted colored his parental instincts. Lots of ‘stories’ here.

It’s a good story about adoption and success regardless, but some are trying to play the “she didn’t have an abortion” angle too much unless it’s known that she actually considered it.
