Skip to comments.Ron Paul: Government could begin to target media, just like it has with terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki

Ron Paul is still mad as hell over America's killing of U.S.-born terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki - and he's warning that members of the media could be next on the government's target list.
The Republican presidential hopeful told an audience at the National Press Club on Wednesday that if citizens do not protest al-Awlaki's death, the country could start broadening its threat list to include reporters.
"Can you imagine being put on a list because you're a threat? What's going to happen when they come to the media? What if the media becomes a threat? ... This is the way this works. It's incrementalism," the 76-year-old Texas congressman said.
"It's slipping and sliding, let me tell you," Paul added.
The libertarian-minded politician made national headlines after he blasted the Obama administration last week for killing al-Awlaki in Yemen without a trial. He said the death of the New Mexico native-turned-terrorist-recruiter was akin to "assassination."

He’s right, of course. Today it’s this Alwaki nut job. Tomorrow it’ll be Tea Party folks.
Why wont Paul just mossy on over to the dem party and challenge obama in the primary?
He is becoming a muttering old fool.
If you include the likes of Axis Sally among the "media".
“...He is becoming a muttering old fool.”
Becoming a muttering old fool? He is an old fool.
What if? What more does the media have to do, Ron? They already support the overthrow of our Constitution.
“Government could begin to target media, just like it has with terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki”
Already been done, guess Congressman Paul forgot about the Clinton’s bombing of Serbian TV studios.
as much as I would sincerely like to see a Predator Drone strike on Brian Williams....
Put your head on straight Ronnie. The liberals love the media and the media loves the liberals. The only people targeted would be conservatives in the media - and that's what is happening already! Unless you're stupid enough to suggest that the government is actually going to put out a "kill" hit list on them. Of course, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if you did believe that.
What legislation has Paul offered to prevent this?
Yeah he is a old fool UNTIL you are the target. Compare how Homeland Security grew the last 10 years. American Citizens never thought they would be the target of groping at airports.
I’m not a Paul supporter, but I do think he is right about this. The USA should not be killing American citizens without a trial of his peers condemning him to death and available appeals to higher authority exhausted.
Dictators from the time of the Caesars to the present have always put the ultimate silence on their critics. Obama would be no exception.
If the federal government did start "disappearing" journalists during some emergency who is going to stop them?
Ahem. You're an idiot.
You know how, when you are typing a comment into the box, sometimes a red line appears under the word you just typed? That means it’s misspelled. Just a helpful little tip, so that readers will not get distracted by your lame spelling errors; instead they can focus on your lame comments.
You know how people criticize spelling because that’s all they got.
What misspelled words, I checked didn’t find any.
Go ahead. Mock Ron Paul.
We are already on a list.
Now tell me which of our Republican Candidates would REALLY take significant steps to reign in this out of control government, or do more than a few token vetos of anti-Constitutional legislation (if any), or actually eliminate ANY government agencies?
Perry? Sure, he’ll get right on that, don’t you think?
Cain? He seems to think what the Fed has done and is doing is just peachy...
It’s sad that only the “kooks” seem to actually want to enforce our Constitutional limitations on government.
It’s worse that we aid and abet the de-legitimization of anyone who dares go there.
Last chance folks. It only gets worse from here...
That's because, technically, there were no misspelled words. "Mossy" was spelled correctly. Unfortunately, the word you wanted was "mosey."
And I corrected your spelling because of your unkind comment about Ron Paul.
