Alabama's message for Oregon: self-defeat
OregonLive.com ^ | October 06, 2011 | The Oregonian Editorial Board

You'd think a killer virus was set loose upon northeast Alabama over the past week. That's how quickly people rushed into panic, some of them packing up and feeding pets for the last time before driving over the state line. And among those who stayed, thousands went into seclusion: Children avoided school and pregnant women stayed home, afraid to go to the hospital.

This is the price of having a last name like Gonzalez or Rodriguez and being undocumented in a state that fears Latino people are ruining the party.

This is not new. But Alabama's new immigration law -- patterned after efforts in Arizona and Georgia and upheld by a judge last week -- is peculiarly narrow-minded in its belief that jobs will somehow be saved for upright Alabamans struggling to find employment, so much of it in the agriculture and poultry processing sectors. The idea behind the law is to root out those unable to prove they're there legally, hold employers who hire them to account, question the right of American-born children of undocumented workers to attend public school, and otherwise strike fear into the heart of melting pot America.

For the moment and on legal grounds only, Alabama wins. But for months and years ahead, Alabama shows itself to be an epic loser that Oregon and every other state needs to watch as Exhibit A in how to blow holes in the feet: economically, politically, socially. What the law does besides scare people off, as tracked by The New York Times, is to create among those who stay an uneducated and needy underclass.

Lol, now the Oregonian staff wouldn't be displaying a little anti-Alabama bias and bigotry, would they?

Guess they missed the stories about two block long lines of mostly white and black Americans lined up to apply for recent vacancies at an Alabama poultry processing plant. And there have been similar stories in other parts of the US where illegals departed a workplace.

"create among those who stay an uneducated and needy underclass."

If most of them leave then deporting the ones that stay won't take as long or cost as much.

I thought Oregon was perfectly capable of defeating itself without any outside inspiration whatsoever. No?

Alabama did not have too many illegals to begin with. The people of Alabam have sent a clear message. Illegals are not welcome there.

It's a message that all of America needs to send.

It has nothing to do with the name Gonzalez or Rodriguez. Legal immigrants are welcome throughout the country. It's the "ILLEGAL" part that Alabama is concerned about.

Any state that does this will prosper. Those that do not will be overrun and will decline.

Hopefully 2012 will make it clear across the country what the mood of the people, the legal citizens is...and then usher in Reps at the Federal and State level who will make it happen.

I wonder how many $millions have been saved in hospital ER bills, unpaid by the illegals?

No, that's the price of illegally entering a sovereign nation and expecting their citizens to provide you and your family with befits meant for US citizens.

Reminds me of a story about W when a Canadian killer was on death row, about to be executed for killing a Texan.

A Canadian reporter (lobbying for Bush to commute death sentence) asked him "what would you say to Canadians who might be worried about coming to Texas".

Bush: Come on down. Just don't murder any of us and you'll be OK.

The Oregonian Editorial Board can't even get beyond their own ignorance and prejudice to correctly describe the intent behind the law.

Are there really a significant number of people in Oregon who are foolish enough to believe what they write?

Oregon got more than it bargained for with LSU the first game of the season and does NOT want to be facing Alabama anytime soon.

Actually the Alabama law is a marvel in it’s execution. Think about it, self policing. No extra police required, illegals rushing to leave, illegals afraid to defraud Medicaid, immediate reduction in the teacher/student ratio, less food stamps, and lots of job openings. Other states are going to have to pick up on this.

Only in Portland (and some in Eugene). Unfortunately the most populous part(s) of the state.

Oregon has no unemployment, a unicorn in every garage, and a pot of gold guaranteed for every rainbow. Not really, but, the reality sucks.
