Feds to design health insurance for the masses

The federal government is taking on a crucial new role in the nation's health care, designing a basic benefits package for millions of privately insured Americans. A framework for the Obama administration was released Thursday.

The report by independent experts from the Institute of Medicine lays out guidelines for deciding what to include in the new "essential benefits package," how to keep it affordable for small businesses and taxpayers, and also scientifically up to date.

About 68 million Americans, many of them currently insured, ultimately would be affected by the new benefits package. That's bigger than the number of seniors enrolled in Medicare. ...

Until now, designing benefits has been the job of insurers, employers and state officials. But the new health care law requires insurance companies to provide at least the federally approved package if they want to sell to small businesses, families and individuals through new state markets set to open in 2014. ...

The panel's rough estimate put annual premiums for individual coverage under the plan at $5,500 to $7,000 in 2014, comparable to what employers pay now. ...

That $5,500-7,000 is what it costs for individuals, such as a self-employed person's private insurance. Since that's the case now, where are the vaunted savings ObamaCare promised to bring?

I saw the draft proposal for their health insurance plan — it involves giving everyone a cyanide pill.

“For the masses” is communist-speak. They’re not even trying to hide it any more.

Our self employed insurance cost almost $12K a year - now with a group plan it is closer to $5000, with our portion being half of that -

The Institute of Medicine:

The Institute of Medicine was chartered by the National Academy of Sciences in 1970 "to improve the health of the American people and peoples of the world" by advancing health science and providing analysis of important issues in health and health policy for government, the professions, the private sector, and the public. The institute carries out its work largely through committees of pro bono experts who employ an evidence-based deliberative process to produce nonpartisan reports, symposia, workshops, and roundtables. Studies originate in several ways. The U.S. Congress may mandate a government agency to contract with the institute; there may be a direct request from government agencies, or from foundations or other private organizations; or, for those projects of high importance and sensitivity that might not be requested by outside organizations, studies may be initiated by the institute.

The institute's portfolio is extensive, ranging from issues of scientific integrity to the future of particular areas of health-science research. A landmark 1988 institute report, The Future of Public Health, identified many of the critical challenges to public health education, practice, and applications. That report is about to be updated. In 1998, the institute developed the prototype leading indicators for Healthy People 2010, the nation's blueprint for health prevention. The importance of community organization and partnerships in furthering public health has been underscored by a number of reports on healthy communities and community organization, and a series of studies on health and behavior and on the role of the social and behavioral sciences in health have important implications for public health as well as other aspects of medicine. A 1992 report, Emerging Infections: Microbial Threats to Health in the United States, was among the earliest warnings with regard to these issues, including the development of antibiotic-resistant organisms. It has been followed by a number of efforts in both public and private sectors to respond to these threats...

Has it already been tried in the SCOTUS? Has Obama already paid off and or threatened all the judges he needs? Who’s writing this script? Can we tar and feather him?

Keywords here folks .... rough estimate $5,500 - 7,000 which in real world actualities equals a realistic $11,000 - 25,000 which includes things you don’t want and doesn’t include things that you do want. As with all Romney-Obamacare directives bending over and grabbing your ankles is not optional!

The media and Obama are trying to act like the lawsuits aren't out there, and that this is the new normal. The Left never stops, haven't we learned that by now? Even if the SC strikes down Obamacare in its entirety, they will still drag their feet and refuse to comply (assuming another Obama term - ugh).

Liberals think everyone else should have to chip in to pay for their shrink sessions, drug rehab and sex change operations.

Over time the government “required” package of benefits will grow beyond even the most ludicrous and absurd examples we could possibly think of today.

“The panel used the analogy of a shopper at the supermarket.”

But letting the shoppers decide for themselves of course is out of the question.

I noticed that as well, Menehune56. How disgusting...

OBAMA MUST NOT BE RE-ELECTED IN 2012 or this "Health Insurance for the Masses" crap will go into effect in 2014!

Vote wisely... elections have consequences.
