Holder Challenges 'Fast and Furious' Allegations in Scathing Letter to Congress

Attorney General Eric Holder, in his most forceful comments to date about the gunrunning probe known as "Fast and Furious," defended himself Friday in a letter to Congress and accused his Republican critics of making "irresponsible and inflammatory" claims.

The Justice Department released the letter late Friday. It was addressed to top Republican and Democratic lawmakers, and comes in the wake of GOP calls for a special counsel to be appointed to investigate Holder's involvement.

Republicans have released routine memos that appear to show Holder was notified about details of the program as early as summer 2010, though he testified to Congress that he only found out in early 2011.

Holder stood by his claims in the letter.

"I have not spoken at length on this subject out of deference to the review being conducted, at my request, by our Department's Inspector General. However, in the past few days, the public discourse concerning these issues has become so base and so harmful to interests that I hope we all share that I must now address these issues notwithstanding the Inspector General's ongoing review," he wrote.

Arizona sheriffs blast gun-smuggling operation

By AMANDA LEE MYERS, Associated Press – 1 hour ago

PHOENIX (AP) — Ten Arizona sheriffs slammed the Obama administration on Friday over a botched federal operation that allowed more than 2,000 high-powered rifles to make their way to Mexico, calling for the president to launch an independent investigation and for Attorney General Eric Holder to step down or be fired.

Speaking at the state capitol in Phoenix, the sheriffs called the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ 2009 operation, known as “Fast and Furious,” a betrayal of state law enforcement.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu (BAB’-yew) said it’s not a partisan issue, noting that the sheriffs joining him were Democrats and Republicans.

He says it’s a public safety issue, and that the guns allowed into Mexico have been linked to dozens of crime scenes on both sides of the border.

Memos contradict Holder on ‘Fast and Furious’

New documents show Attorney General Eric Holder was sent briefings on the controversial Fast and Furious operation as far back as July of 2010 — directly contradicting statements to Congress. (Oct. 3) (/CBS News)

Just a matter of process. He’s established his defense in writing, and will now until the end of time say “as I said.....”, or “you have misconstrued my statement”, whatever. It’s a point of focus to redirect future inquiries, and allegations. It’s an obstacle for use in his defense.

Thanks for posting that letter by the way.

Executive order cracks down on classified leaks

October 7, 2011

The White House released an executive order Friday to better protect classified information.

The order establishes an Insider Threat Task Force led by Attorney General Eric Holder and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper to combat federal employee leaks of classified information.

The order responds to the WikiLeaks’ leaks of classified government documents, including State Department cables and Defense Department reports, earlier this year.

It also:

• Requires each agency to designate a senior official to oversee classified information sharing and implement an insider threat detection and prevention program.

• Establishes an interagency steering committee responsible for setting classified information sharing and safeguarding goals. The committee must report annually to the president on agencies’ successes and failures in protecting classified information.

“Our nation’s security requires classified information to be shared immediately with authorized users around the world but also requires sophisticated and vigilant means to ensure it is shared securely,” the order says.

But the order also states that it should not deter lawful disclosure of information by government employees covered under the whistle-blower laws.

Steven Aftergood, a specialist on secrecy issues for the Federation of American Scientists, said the order does not set new policies but instead starts the process for developing new ways to deal with classified information.

“The policies that ultimately result from this process may be problematic but we don’t know what they are yet,” Aftergood said.

Holder wouldn’t be in this, if he had been in prison for his part in Fannie Mae.

New book calls out ‘racial agenda of the Obama Justice Department’

President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder face fiery race-based criticisms in a new book about their selective enforcement of civil rights.

In “Injustice: Exposing the Racial Agenda of the Obama Justice Department,” former Department of Justice Civil Rights Division attorney J. Christian Adams describes how racist radicals have hijacked the DOJ and rarely enforce laws when it’s not politically beneficial for them to do so.

The book begins during the Bush administration with a story from Noxubee County, Miss., where Adams joined fellow Civil Rights Division attorney Chris Coates and others from the DOJ in investigating discrimination against white voters by a black leader. Inside the DOJ, especially in the Civil Rights Division, Coates and Adams faced adamant opposition to investigating and litigating the Noxubee case. Adams says it wasn’t because there was a lack of evidence or because the accusations were frivolous — according to him, it was because it was a case about discrimination against white people, and had been for several elections. Adams says this was a real-life example of “reverse racism.”

Adams argues that because of Obama and Holder’s staffing and selective enforcement, the Noxubee case is just the beginning, and Americans should be ready for an onslaught of similar situations in coming years. In a chapter titled “Personnel is Policy,” Adams makes the case that Obama and Holder understand that a racist and extremist influence they install at the DOJ now will last for decades in the form of career attorneys.

Yeah, I guess so. It doesn't really tell me what the AG's office does though aside from lower level deputies making sure that all content is redacted from status memos before the AG sees them.

This is the THIRD time we can link Holder to a manufactured crisis.

Ruby Ridge
Waco
Fast & Furious

None of which, I take it, included Holder’s people.
