Even without recourse to calumny, it is clear that evangelicals will not be reconciled to Mormon doctrines without ceasing to be evangelicals.
Presidents are elected for their policy views, leadership skills and character, not their soteriology. Such theological convictions about salvation may be infinitely important, but they are politically irrelevant.
But presidential primaries are not always the best place to maintain such distinctions. In interfaith relations, it is the lack of familiarity that breeds contempt — and portions of America still view Mormonism as a threatening novelty. Among conservatives, however, this opposition is more likely to fade than build. No primary opponent of Romney's can exploit these sentiments, at least in an overt way.

Mormons are one of the nation's strongest conservative voting blocks. A serious Republican candidate simply can't run an anti-Mormon campaign.

I won’t vote *against* a Mormon. But I would vote *for* a Christian if the choice were that clear.
Do you honestly believe that the media will give a pass to Romney like the one they gave to Obama? They will jump on everything about the Republican nominee and then loudly proclaim they are doing their job in vetting the candidates. SHEESH!

Unless he plans on Proselytizing Mormonism from the Oval Ofice, then his religion is Not important to me one bit. Its his Proselytizing his belief in man-made Global Warming that I find troublesome.
Romney is a suede-shoe liberal phoney. I wouldn’t vote for him under any circumstances. Besides, how can you trust someone who isn’t allowed to drink a beer? Heck, even that phoney prophet Joe Smith made and sold beer from his home. I don’t trust phonies.

Religious tests for office are forbidden in the constitution. That founding principle limiting the federal government should give us pause when we are considering how the religious beliefs of a candidate will affect the way they govern.
Consider also that many of the critisisms being leveled ar Mormons by the “my Jesus is better than your Jesus” crowd sound very much like the arguements non-believers use to dismiss Christianity as a whole.
They claim to be "independent fundamentalist Mormons" who are selling a book about their lives.
The guy claims to be a fifth-generation polygamist, as do his wives. All they are asking for is to have polygamy decriminalized. They don't want polygamy legalized, just decriminalized (yeah, right).
O'Reilly asked how the guy would stay out of jail, and he said "by staying quiet about their lifestyle." The guy said that he didn't want to stay quiet anymore, that he just wanted to be left alone to live his life "according to his faith."
O'Reilly was trying to compare them to the creeping activism of gay marriage, but these people were stopping just short of that.
My first take-aways were from the interview were:
1. The timing was suspicious. They published a thick book about their lifestyle. It takes a significant investment from a publisher to put out a book like that. It seems to me that the purpose of a liberal publisher putting out a book like that now is to make Romney seem scary to people, via association with these people through Mormonism.
2. Four adults with 24 children? That sounds like the makings of a tribe, a clan. That's how the sheikdoms in the middle-east were formed. Do we really want to see American civil order degenerate into private tribal enclaves?

Your sentiment subsequent to this one holds water. This first statement, however, overlooks the obvious fact that the LSM refused to vet brocko's black liberation theology. With Mitt's religion, OTOH, the LSM would give it the most extensive anal exam of all time. He simply could not survive it.

Unfortunately, it's not about you, or me or nearly anyone on this site. It's about the most disgusting and destructive force in our nation - the mindless, malleable, mushy middle. By the time the media blitz is over, there would be no way they would vote for a Mormon for the assistant Dog Catcher, much less President.
