SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Two leading Republican contenders for mayor of America's eighth-largest city are openly gay, and voters have barely noticed. It doesn't come up at campaign appearances or in local news coverage.
District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and City Councilman Carl DeMaio haven't made their marks as gay rights activists, which may help explain why their sexual orientation has been a non-issue even among social conservatives.

Has San Diego ever considered an openly straight GOP mayor?

Houston tried this and it has turned out to be an unmitigated disaster.
They would do better to find a good solid conservative, Christian, American, Marine Corps veteran if they have any snap at all.
I wouldn’t hire Rush Limbaugh as a marriage counselor yet he is the finest political analyst around. I can’t see how one’s sexual proclivities would affect his mayoral duties. If they do, then boot him.
California is a lost cause.
We could always use some California conservatives in Michigan to keep our rightward momentum going.
Too cold for me up there. Got my eye on Texas.
If Heaven ain’t a lot like Texas, I don’t want to go.
I don’t care what others do in their bedroom. I actually got in an argument on a board just the other day with some lib who insists conservatives want to put all gays in jail.
No, we don’t.
I really don’t want to know what anyone does in their bedroom. I don’t care what their color is. I don’t care what their religion is (except Islam; I admit I don’t like it). What I want is someone who isn’t going to rub their “victim” status in my face and do their job capably without any excuses.
No, but San Diego fire chief Tracy Jarman, an open lesbian, who forced straight firefighters to attend a gay pride parade certainly has.
My opinion doesn't matter at the ballot box. I just have to pay CA state income taxes because my current assignment places me in San Diego. I'm an Idaho resident. Taxation without representation. All I get is a soapbox for my opinions.
MY HOME TOWN HAS GONE TO HELL.
My home town has gone to Hell.
To Sodom and Gomorrah.
To Sodom, Gomorrah and Hillcrest.
lol!
Exactly. They’ve taken over.
IF it’s true that they are not gay activists, and if they are the best qualified for the job, then I don’t have a problem with it.
I abominate gay activists, who want to force their agenda on our country. But I have had gay friends and colleagues whom I could get along with without any problems. There really is a big difference. I don’t really approve of what they do, but I don’t feel obligated to say so if the subject doesn’t arise. And they don’t ask for my explicit approval.
I think that that IF I started with is important. You can’t always tell what people will do once they get into office. They might turn out to be gay activists after all. If there’s good reason to think not, then I wouldn’t worry about it. Better a decent gay in a liberal city than a crazed lib Democrat gay from the other party.
Carl DeMaio is, without question, the best candidate running for mayor. He's a hard-core fiscal conservative. He's been taking on the public employee unions, on corruption, on waste in city gov't from the private sector before he won his city council seat and hasn't let up.
He is the candidate the establishment in both parties wants to destroy.
If you make heterosexuality a litmus test you can vote for RINO Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher (vote yes on 12 yo consent law, Dream Act, etc.) or perhaps registered Socialist Congressman Bob Filner (D).
Was a nice town for a long while.
