In the same situation, I might have considered forgiving the perp -- provided he asked for forgiveness; after serving a very lengthy period of penance, behind bars.

Forgiveness may be the right thing for an individual, or family, to do, but that shouldn’t mean the perp doesn’t face the law.
At least that how it should be.
