Do Cain's opponents believe that he's a legit threat?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 10/11/11 | Jay Bookman

Posted on 10/11/2011 10:15:03 AM PDT by DRey

One of the things to watch for in tonight’s GOP debate is how Herman Cain is treated by his fellow candidates. Is he perceived as a threat? Do they take his chances seriously?

snip

Based on history, that kind of performance ought to make Cain a target in the debate, because that’s what happens to top-tier candidates. When Rick Perry entered the race and seemed a real threat, Romney wasted no time attacking him, with Michele Bachmann gleefully joining in. Perry hasn’t been the same since.

snip

So if Romney, Perry and Bachmann do perceive Cain as a legitimate threat to win the nomination, they’ll begin to question him and his policies directly. Call it a sign of respect. Maybe they’ll ask him why, in 2008, he strongly backed the TARP bailout and treated opponents with such condescension, attacking them as “free market purists (who) want you to believe that this is the end of capitalism as we know it.” Maybe they’ll press him on why he dismissed an audit of the Federal Reserve, saying those who thought an audit necessary just didn’t know enough about the Fed. (They also ought to challenge him on the fact that his “9-9-9 plan would significantly raise taxes on the poor and middle class, but this being a Republican debate, that probably won’t happen.)

On the other hand, if they continue to treat Cain with kid gloves, preferring to direct their fire elsewhere, that will say a lot as well.

I never said Cain wasn't in charge of himself. I said he's being used as a political pawn to get Romney the nod.

If Perry doesn't do a "bang-up" job tonight, he may be toast. I expect him to at least do well. No one -- NO ONE denies he's stunk it up in the debates thus far. It's never been his forum for expression.

I realize you're emotionally invested in Cain already, but he's not going to win. You can take that to the bank. Cain will not be the 2012 president. His poll numbers will not go much higher before they begin to fall. He has too many issues for the majority of voters to get onboard.

So he's being used, but nobody's using him. Got it. Well, that clarity of thought certainly provides a strong endorsement of your overall political analysis.

Don’t try to confuse a simple statement because you don’t like it. Romney is using him, building him up. Cain is happy for Romney to build him up over Perry. Sells lots of books. I know you understand this. You just don’t like it. I wouldn’t either if Cain was my man.

1) A business is an ECONOMY. Cain has been as successful, if not more successful then Perry in his respective endeavors. We need private sector jobs and experience, not government.

2) Aquila=lib talking points. Mother Jones? Really? Nice job tipping your hand, though.

3) Show me where Cain has waffled on pro-life. Supporting Al Gore, perhaps? Wait.....

4) Cain has the exact same energy plan as Palin. Do you really think he won't access her? That's why Palin waited until Perry sank like a rock and Cain won a major straw poll in a major swing state to announce she wasn't running. Sure.

5) His NEW TAX plan is a JOBS plan and it will benefit the VAST majority of people who earn a living in this country not to mention stimulating business and economic activity through the elimination of estate and capital gains taxes. Yes it might cost THOSE WHO DON'T PAY FEDERAL TAX a bit but isn't one of our problems that not everyone pulls their weight? Perry seems to prefer the status quo on taxes when he's not spending the money on illegals.

6) Empowerment zones aren't a new entitlement, they are tax breaks designed to stimulate economic activity in blighted areas to get people OFF WELFARE!

Hope this helps, and BTW, I'm not your sweetie. Cute little attempt at condescension, though!

Oh, come on. A business is an ecomony? Good grief. I’m not even going to read the rest of your post. Get a dictionary and use it, and then maybe we’ll talk.

Actually there are many more than 20 candidates who won in spite of money disadvantage. The list is lot longer than those who lost with money advantage.

When I have some free time I will freep mail you the list.

I didn’t confuse a simple statement. You made the statement and weren’t able to back it up with any evidence, just the usual innuendo that you demonstrate so much affection for.

It’s also amusing when someone tries to tell me what I’m thinking and why. You know, as long as you base your strategy and analysis on mindreading, you’re going to run into a lot of frustration and disappointment.

“Overwhelming” is the operative word here. Send me a list of candidates that won with “overwhelming” money disadvantage. That I would love to see. I’d really appreciate a list like that. Thanks.

"Perry knows a vote for Cain is a vote for Romney."

Only in your bizarro world.

Personal attacks don’t play well here. Play nice or go home.

Can’t handle the truth, huh?

At least you actually said something positive about your candidate as opposed to bashing everyone else. Good job.

But you do realize my post wasn’t really for your benefit anyway, you’re a lost cause and your antics here are doing nothing but hurting your candidate. Keep it positive and you’ll do much better!

” That’s all ya got? “ <<<

You betcha. It’s enough. Few I know call Romney’s socialized healthcare plan in Massachusettes anything but socialized healthcare. He is a RINO, was a pal to Kennedy, has flip flopped on all things conservative except the (R) behind his name, and Cain likes him, voted for him, continues to flatter him, would use him as VP, would consent to be his VP has cheerfully tag teamed with him against Perry, his only threat. What do you need? A map and a flashlight?

No, it's not that. But starting a long, drawn-out paragraph with an inane comment like "a business is an economy"...listen, I have to grade freshmen papers all the time. I get paid to read that drivel, but no one pays me to read nonsense here. I reserve the right to skip any post with a sentence like "a business is an economy." That's just too much.

As for my "antics," I don't need your advice -- truly -- on how to promote my candidate, so keep it to yourself. I get plenty of people emailing me with questions about Perry that are too afraid to post in this savage world of FR. You asked a question, I answered it. Will there be anything else?

No one in the field is better than Cain at answering questions on the fly. Years of doing conservative talk radio will do that for you.
