The conservative pro-business group Americans for Job Security has a commercial set to run during the Republican presidential debate tonight that labels “greedy union bosses” as job killers. It stars a huge inflatable rodent: Richie the Rat. The commercial identifies Richie, who appears outside the National Labor Relations Board office, as the “one brave leader that is standing up to union bosses.” “The recovery is slipping away. The housing market is still sinking, and the jobs aren’t coming back,” the ad’s narrator says. “Washington is making it worse. Greedy union bosses are calling the shots. They want their payback.”

What the heck is this? “Richy the Rat”? If you were trying, how could you make employers look even worse?

seems to me that ‘richie the rat’ would have more negatives than any union boss. couldn’t they come up with a cute, loveable character?a RAT named RICHie?

Worst advertising idea I have ever seen.

It MUST be deliberate. Nobody in the industry is that dumb.

Why the Rat? 'Cause turnabout is fair play.
The NLRB said it was okay for unions to inflate giant rats in front of businesses that chose not to unionize. So now, I'm a Big Rat getting up in Big Labor's face to see how THEY like it. I'm standing FOR workers and UP TO Big Labor. Union bosses—how you like me now?

Union inflatable rat vs. anti-union inflatable rat... huh?

Both are probably made in China.

This looks like a spin-off of a protest ploy Chicago-area unions are using now. When striking or calling out an employer/jobsite for scab hiring, they deploy a big inflatable rat on the sidewalk outside the work location.

Mangled Messaging Award Candidate.

No idea what they’re trying to say or co-opt.

I believe what they are trying to do is take the “gigantic inflated rat” unions erect when a business uses non-union labor to “reverse” the message that rat brings.

Anytime I have seen the “rat” ( a public library I passed on my way to work for years before I moved)had this gigantic inflatable rat. At first I had no idea what it meant, so I looked it up.

Once I informed myself what that rat meant, I was pretty ticked off at unions.

I’ve heard many a time here that “those who control the language control the masses”......perhaps not exact wording, hopefully I made myself clear.

If we can take away the “unions negative image” of this rat and turn it against the unions, I believe it would be a good thing.

Like Chicago, unions have used huge inflatable rats (10 feet tall or so) for a long time to bring attention to a non-union job. There was one just yesterday at 5th Avenue and 35th Street in NY - something to do with either a condo job there or an asbestos cleanup. Some unions in NY are getting rid of the rats for a high pitched whistle that a number of them use to attract attention. I kind of like the rats better.

The Rat is a perfect icon to use AGAINST the unions for a change. The union leaders and the Rats in Congress are killing any meaningful infrastructure work in the Country by requiring union wages with or without union workers (Davis Bacon - prevailing wage). California just passed law prohibiting local municipalities from varying from this prevailing wage nonsense. How does that help the unemployed?

Maybe we can rent the rats from the unions. So little work going on, must be a lot of rats in storage!

count the minutes until the libs make Richie the Rat the mascot of the republicans. being RICH and a RAT. I can see the ad campaing now.

we don’t need the democrats to smear us, we smear ourselves. kinda like beleiving Romney is a conservative, just because he says so, when his record proves otherwise...

How much fun would it be to drive past the giant rat with a .177 pellet gun and hole it...
