Anita Perry: Husband Rick Perry "brutalized" by media, the GOP because of his faith
Dallas News ^ | 10/13/11 | Wayne Slater

Anita Perry, campaigning for husband Rick Perry in South Carolina, suggests he's been "brutalized" by the media and the GOP because of his faith. Perry is the most religiously expressive candidate in the Republican field. He hosted a seven-hour Christian prayer rally in August in advance of entering the presidential race. And at last week's Values Voters Summit, he was introduced by a Dallas Baptist pastor who said rival Mitt Romney is not a Christian and Mormonism is a cult.

Perry has suffered several extremely bad weeks, stumbling in the debates and losing the coveted endorsement of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who's backing Romney. Here, in emotional remarks at a South Carolina campaign stop, Anita Perry said:

"It's been a rough month. We have been brutalized and beaten up and chewed up in the press to where I need this today. We are being brutalized by our opponents, and our own party. So much of that is, I think, they look at him because of his faith. He is the only true conservative - well, there are some true conservatives. And they're there for good reasons. And they may feel like God called them too. But I truly feel like we are here for that purpose."

Here's the full 15-minute appearance -- a remarkable, emotional address threaded with religious references in which at one point (about 3 minutes in) she nearly breaks down, then (8 minutes in) makes the comments about the brutal campaign and later recalls someone who told Perry his political troubles were a divine test: "God is testing you because he wants you to know when you're in the White House, how you got there." It was a public show of emotion, not unlike Hillary Clinton breaking down in tears

I was not aware that you are such an expert on Political races. Obviously you are unaware of Perry’s history. Guess you will find out. You obviously support another candidate, so what do you care what he does? Hmmmm?

No, he has been smeared and trashed by supporters of other candidates. Insults eliminate any credibility that you might have had.

I didn’t even know he was religious. I have trouble with him because he could never explain why constitutional conservatism is better for every last American. He also doesn’t get it, or why would he support illegals to that extent? We all want to help the poor of the world, but he prefers the criminal poor to the honest poor who wAit in lines for visas in far countries.

I see you are back insulting, trashing and showing considerable ignorance again. Since I am from TX I know his record there, know a lot of different times he has requested assistance from Obama, who has refused each time. He has stated numerous times that fences in urban areas would be useful, but in the rural area pointless. You would block ranchers from water for their stock. The border in many places is in the middle of the the RIVER! TX and Perry filed a brief of support for Arizona. However, a similar law never got out of committee, so it would not pass no matter what. The tuition (as you know) was passed with a veto proof majority. I am going to pass your comments to your candidate so they can see what some of their supporters are doing for them. I just know they will be proud!

Do you think Perry will soon quit the race to avoid continual self- embarrassment?

You obviously aren't familiar with the campaign's "Alternate Strategy" for the next debate.

Everyone knows a *real* man hides behind his wife's skirt.

...or is this just the one who *REALLY* wears the pants in the Perry household giving vent to her frustration that she will probably never get to play Queen Marie Antoinette as the First Wookie is currently doing?

Cheers!

I will not trash your candidate as you have trashed mine. I will not vote for Mr. Cain however, since he played the race card and trashed Governor Perry twice on TV. I heard Mr. Cain all three times.

I have not seen any Perry supporters trashing Herman Cain. I have seen Herman Cain trash Perry three times on TV (I heard him) and you and other Herman Cain supporters have heavily insulted and trashed Governor Perry. Perry has not trashed Cain at all. Guess who is showing class and who isn’t.

I see you have arrived along with the other smear merchants. A candidates family should be off limits. That Gardasil is a dead horse, but you chose to insult his wife.

You have to be courageous to run for president. For many candidates, an unshakeable belief in God goes with the territory.

Don't EVER call Obaama courageous, or imply he has geniune faith other than "[his] Muslim faith."

Mostly smears and trash, but that is what I expect from individuals who support other candidates.

I agree with you about Islam, but what has this to do with Perry? You have written this stuff before, but he has done any of that stuff. Please don’t be insulting and smear an innocent man.

"If Perry is smart he'll get his wife away from the microphones."

Amen, brother. She sounded and looked like a scared, nerve-wracked, anemic southern belle right out of a Tennessee Williams play.

Get the hook!

I only get to Bucks County but it’s the most beautiful county on earth.

I must respectfully differ. I love the North Shore of Lake Superior.

There used to be a billboard on I-494 near Minneapolis with a still photo of Lake Superior with the simple legend: "Fire Your Therapist."

There is something innately soothing about winds blowing off of large bodies of water...

Cheers!

“Wrong. Karl Rove and his band of roving RINOs went full steam ahead supporting fellow RINO pro-abortion Kay Bailey Hutchinson over Perry.”

...with one wee little difference.

Against Kay Bailey, he was running as a Texan, against a Texan, before fellow Texans.

Now, he's running for the whole country, many of whom (shall we say on the Coasts?) do NOT feel any special affinity for Texans and their idiosyncrasies. Poor Ricky doesn't seem to have grasped this yet.

Oh, and one other thing.

Obaama got elected because of "Bush fatigue": and by someone who 'appears' well spoken because they can use neurolinguistic programming to read catch-phrases with hypnotic intonation off of a teleprompter.

Stumbling over your own words in a forceful Southern drawl will not help against this.

Cheers!

C-130 Rick Perry: He flew the world before politics

Abilene Online

By Sarah Kleiner Varble

Rank: Retired as a captain

Hometown: Haskell

Crew job: C-130 aircraft commander

Served in the Air Force: 1972 to 1977

Dyess AFB tour: March 4, 1974, to Feb. 28, 1977

His story:Way back before he was governor of Texas, Rick Perry had two choices as a young member of the Air Force.

He could either follow his dream and work toward becoming an instructor pilot in the sleek T-38, or he could fly the hulking C-130, planes that affectionately were referred to as “trash haulers” by Perry and his cohorts.

“There was no telling what you were going to haul around on any given day, from high value cargo like human beings to the colonel’s kitty litter,” Perry told the Reporter-News in a recent phone interview.

He wanted to fly T-38s, but not badly enough to move to Selma, Ala., where he would have been assigned. So, Perry chose to stay in Texas and fly the C-130.

In 1974, he moved to Dyess Air Force Base, about 55 miles from his hometown of Haskell, and began a career that took him all over the world and shaped his political future.

“It was one of the great adventures of my life,” Perry said. “I had a fairly pedestrian life until I was 23 years old.”

Perry could count on one hand the number of trips he had taken out of his home state by the time he graduated from Texas A&M University, but everything changed when he joined the Air Force.

Flying C-130s, Perry lived in Germany and Saudi Arabia. He flew in Central and South America, North Africa and all over Europe.

“I saw all of these different types of governments and I made the connections to how the people acted and looked, and it became abundantly clear to me that, at that particular point in time, that America was this very unique place and that our form of democracy was very rare,” Perry said. “ ... That was the greatest gift I received from my years of being in the military, and they really shaped my outlook on the rest of my life.”

Perry retired from the Air Force in 1977 — but not without one last adventure.

As his final days approached, Perry was assigned to a mission to “haul trash” to Bermuda with a relatively inexperienced crew.

“I’m sure the young guys stayed up a little longer than the older guy, which would be me at 26 years old,” Perry said, and they fell asleep on the way back to Abilene.

About the time the plane reached Atlanta, a fire light for the No. 3 engine flashed once. And then it flashed again.

Perry poked his co-pilot as the light reappeared and held steady on red.

Using the headset, he asked the loadmaster to take a look at the engine from the window and about that time, the engine exploded and blew a tail pipe off the plane.

“He started screaming that we were on fire and that we were all going to die,” Perry said. “The aircraft operated as advertised and flies amazingly well on three engines.”

Perry and his crew were stuck at Pope Air Force Base while awaiting a new engine. With three days left in his enlistment, Perry called the command post at Dyess and informed them that they would have to send a new pilot along with the engine if they didn’t hurry.

“I said, ‘In three days, I’m not Captain Perry anymore, I’m Mr. Perry, and I’m going home,” Perry said.

The engine arrived and the plane returned to Dyess in time for Perry to retire Feb. 28, as planned.

He went on to be elected to the state House of Representatives, agriculture commissioner, lieutenant governor and, finally, governor of Texas.
