Anita Perry, campaigning for husband Rick Perry in South Carolina, suggests he's been "brutalized" by the media and the GOP because of his faith. Perry is the most religiously expressive candidate in the Republican field. He hosted a seven-hour Christian prayer rally in August in advance of entering the presidential race. And at last week's Values Voters Summit, he was introduced by a Dallas Baptist pastor who said rival Mitt Romney is not a Christian and Mormonism is a cult.
Perry has suffered several extremely bad weeks, stumbling in the debates and losing the coveted endorsement of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who's backing Romney. Here, in emotional remarks at a South Carolina campaign stop, Anita Perry said:
"It's been a rough month. We have been brutalized and beaten up and chewed up in the press to where I need this today. We are being brutalized by our opponents, and our own party. So much of that is, I think, they look at him because of his faith. He is the only true conservative - well, there are some true conservatives. And they're there for good reasons. And they may feel like God called them too. But I truly feel like we are here for that purpose."
Here's the full 15-minute appearance -- a remarkable, emotional address threaded with religious references in which at one point (about 3 minutes in) she nearly breaks down, then (8 minutes in) makes the comments about the brutal campaign and later recalls someone who told Perry his political troubles were a divine test: "God is testing you because he wants you to know when you're in the White House, how you got there." It was a public show of emotion, not unlike Hillary Clinton breaking down in tears

C-130 Rick Perry: He Flew The World Before Politics
C-130 Rick Perry: He flew the world before politics
Abilene Online
By Sarah Kleiner Varble
Rank: Retired as a captain
Hometown: Haskell
Crew job: C-130 aircraft commander
Served in the Air Force: 1972 to 1977
Dyess AFB tour: March 4, 1974, to Feb. 28, 1977
His story:Way back before he was governor of Texas, Rick Perry had two choices as a young member of the Air Force.
He could either follow his dream and work toward becoming an instructor pilot in the sleek T-38, or he could fly the hulking C-130, planes that affectionately were referred to as “trash haulers” by Perry and his cohorts.
“There was no telling what you were going to haul around on any given day, from high value cargo like human beings to the colonel’s kitty litter,” Perry told the Reporter-News in a recent phone interview.
He wanted to fly T-38s, but not badly enough to move to Selma, Ala., where he would have been assigned. So, Perry chose to stay in Texas and fly the C-130.
In 1974, he moved to Dyess Air Force Base, about 55 miles from his hometown of Haskell, and began a career that took him all over the world and shaped his political future.
“It was one of the great adventures of my life,” Perry said. “I had a fairly pedestrian life until I was 23 years old.”
Perry could count on one hand the number of trips he had taken out of his home state by the time he graduated from Texas A&M University, but everything changed when he joined the Air Force.
Flying C-130s, Perry lived in Germany and Saudi Arabia. He flew in Central and South America, North Africa and all over Europe.
“I saw all of these different types of governments and I made the connections to how the people acted and looked, and it became abundantly clear to me that, at that particular point in time, that America was this very unique place and that our form of democracy was very rare,” Perry said. “ ... That was the greatest gift I received from my years of being in the military, and they really shaped my outlook on the rest of my life.”
Perry retired from the Air Force in 1977 but not without one last adventure.
As his final days approached, Perry was assigned to a mission to “haul trash” to Bermuda with a relatively inexperienced crew.
“I’m sure the young guys stayed up a little longer than the older guy, which would be me at 26 years old,” Perry said, and they fell asleep on the way back to Abilene.
About the time the plane reached Atlanta, a fire light for the No. 3 engine flashed once. And then it flashed again.
Perry poked his co-pilot as the light reappeared and held steady on red.
Using the headset, he asked the loadmaster to take a look at the engine from the window and about that time, the engine exploded and blew a tail pipe off the plane.
“He started screaming that we were on fire and that we were all going to die,” Perry said. “The aircraft operated as advertised and flies amazingly well on three engines.”
Perry and his crew were stuck at Pope Air Force Base while awaiting a new engine. With three days left in his enlistment, Perry called the command post at Dyess and informed them that they would have to send a new pilot along with the engine if they didn’t hurry.
“I said, ‘In three days, I’m not Captain Perry anymore, I’m Mr. Perry, and I’m going home,” Perry said.
The engine arrived and the plane returned to Dyess in time for Perry to retire Feb. 28, as planned.
He went on to be elected to the state House of Representatives, agriculture commissioner, lieutenant governor and, finally, governor of Texas.
Thanks for the information. I watch Rick in the debate atosphere and get a different take from what others are complaining. As a Southerner, I know we don’t react as fast as others, but that doesn’t mean we’re stupid or not paying attention. When a really important question cmes up in these set-up ‘debates’, THEN I will see how Rick handles the moment. The incident with the lost engine tells me he isn’t likely to panic, and his education and work History tell me he isn’t stupid. Thanks again for dishing some of the facts on Rick Perry.
The more rabid Palin and the Paul fans seemed to be the worst.
But I guess most of those Palin fans are Cain fans now.
Excellent post.
Thanks.
But rapid delivery of 1000 works a minute of pure BS is what the people want to hear.
Or how about repeating at verbatim 9-9-9 no matter what is asked of you. Yea, these two are real world class winners.
A RINO of the first degree and a Federal Reserve insider who is trying to pass himself off as an “outsider”. And he has absolutely no executive experience whatsoever. How has that worked out the last three years.
Debates mean nothing. George W. Bush sounded like an incoherent moron in each debate against Kerry and Gore. He was elected twice. Cain certainly is not the easiest person to understand. How many people have said a word about that? But they will sure tell you how bad of a drawl Perry has.
We should not use MSM standards to judge Rick Perry. Its exactly what the left wants to happen. Yes he has conservative shortcomings in several areas of his record, on immigration policy for example, but he stands head and shoulders above all of them on governance experience and service to the nation and his sins are minor compared to Romney’s.
I do not buy the Southerners are slow meme either, LOL, they are just cool under fire, and Perry wasn’t taking any bait in the “debait.”Both Romney and Cain have maxed out, and now its Rick Perry’s time to make his mark.I hope he gets on with it well, and he is the best candidate in the field so far. We shouldn’t elect a TV personna this time, besides, he often carries a Ruger .380 auto when he jogs, that alone earns my vote, LOL.
This says it all, Perry will beat the ass off Obama if he secures the nomination,he has nailed him before directly and has the balls to take Obama on face to face as a matter of official duty, unlike any of the other candidates:
Your opinion doesn’t mean much.
Romney fans and Sarah Palin acolytes who are still having temper tantrums because she announced she isn't running.
In other words, a whole bunch of people who really need to grow up.
Hey Perry......cry me a river : )
(and if they're Pills I want her to share dammit!)

ROTF !
Eyew. As an “Christian”, she should KNOW BETTER than whine about being persecuted for one’s Faith. We are told to “Count it all Joy, when we are faced with various trials”. Jesus said, “They will hate you because they hated ME first!”.
Herman Cain is not only a Christian, he is an associate pastor in a Baptist Church. I don’t hear MRS. CAIN whining about him being “Brutalized for his Faith”.
If she thinks he is being “Brutalized” now, HOW on earth could she handle her husband being POTUS, and being criticized by the ENTIRE PLANET????
I know the truth as I helped testify for the enforcement bills. I know what Ricky did to E-Verify and where his political donations come from.He has to serve the cheap labor lobby to get money. He is not alone. The problem is that this time EVERYBODY’S AWAKE ON IMMIGRATION.
You may be right. I never knew what his real faith was or Hillary's for that matter. Media didn't direct us on that issue. They were too busy leading us off the cliff. We were told that Christine O'Donnell was a witch. Palin was a member of a weird sect of Christian. Newt has no Christian values, they say. Santorum and Bachman are extremist members of their religions. Of course, Romney is a Mormon. Ron Paul an Athiest? Cain a strong Baptist....but still no mention of Reverend Wright. You can like, love, not care, or hate Rick Perry. BUT one thing is for sure, you can track his life. He's an all-American boy. Obama doesn't fit into the comparison equation. He's an anomoly. I didn't vote for him. I don't know anyone who did. I don't think "courage" applies to him. Per your order, I will not call him courageous.
Trotting out the wife as a political prop, using religion (last refuge of a scoundrel)-—— all of them-—excellent points, BB.
The Ricky train is careening off the cliff into the swamp at breakneck speed— they are bailing and ditching Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, etc etc etc, fast and furiously, hoping to slow the descent.
Once he realizes his activities there are hurting his candidacy, I predict Ricky will soon say he never even heard of Texas (/snix).
So he's getting punked, and not really by Romney. Their support bases are not the same people. He's lost all his support to a Cain artist playing economic three card monte to a bunch of stupid marks otherwise known as the late-great Tea Party.
Doncha mean “Cry me a Rio” ? :-P
What about Newt’s new wife ? What is she, #5 ?
