R.I. Gov. Lincoln Chafee says former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney is a completely different person as a presidential candidate than the man who was once a fellow member of the Republican Partys moderate wing in the Northeast.
Its the same thing I saw with John McCain, and I saw with George Pataki and with Rudy Giuliani, Chafee told WPRI.com during an interview at his office Wednesday.
Referencing a speech on foreign policy Romney gave last week at The Citadel, Chafee said: The appeal you have to make to the Republican primary audience thats just alien to whats in our best interests as a country.
Chafee recalled that he used to share many of the same views as those men, noting that he and McCain were the only two Republican senators who voted against the Bush tax cuts in 2001 and that the Arizona senator was good on climate change, he was good on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
And I heard George Pataki, who was a three-term governor of New York, and was good on immigration, who attracted all sorts of Latino votes, he was good on the environment and Rudy Giulini, he was mayor of New York City, Chafee said.
But when I heard them with national ambitions, it was a different person a completely different person, he continued. Its true in all their cases. And to hear Rudy Giuliani talking to a Republican primary audience is just and thats true with Mitt Romney. You just get pulled so far off.

I have no use for Romney, but once you start caring what Lincoln Chafeee says about a Republican, you might as well ask Barry Obama for his opinion.
If Tomney was the Mormon Reagan, Chafee would be spewing the same garbage out of his mouth. He’s probably just mad because Romney wouldn’t meet him and Jim McGreevey at a highway rest stop for a threesome.
Well, duh.
Git yer own box of Cocoa Puffs...:)
These peculiar, isolated people appear to need to merge with a real state next door and let California split in two to keep the fifty state configuration.
Rhode Island is a stagnant historical anomaly that has no reason to exist.
Chaffe said something? Who gives a bleep?
At least Chafee is honest, and left the GOP to become a liberal independent. McInsane, Myth, and Snowe/Collins should follow his lead.
A skunk can change it’s stripes but it’s still a skunk.
I think Romney will lose like McCain and he will be comfortable with it, like McCain.
Right now a prepackaged tennis ball could beat Obama in 2012
Stay away...and spend my money in other states.
Chafee is a liberal, not a moderate.
I do not support Mitt Romney.
I know that much of the world has been waiting for my position on this. Well, there it is.
What’s a moderate ? The Missing Linc was a devoted Socialist whose voting record was identical to Hillary Clinton’s.
