"I'm the only problem-solver in the group," Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain told Mike Huckabee in an August Fox News appearance. Well, many candidates bill themselves as problem-solvers. In fact, if we asked any candidate running for any office in the entire country, practically every one would likely define him- or herself as able to solve problems. Yet we know that politicians, as a rule, create and worsen problems rather than fix them.

.....Overconfidence turns the hopeful campaign pronouncements of otherwise successful people into dismal policy. In the end, Americans usually end up with more laws, less freedom, and no money.

The question is what type of problem-solver Cain will be as president......

Examining Herman Cain's record leaves serious questions about which type of problem-solver he is. In a column published October 20, 2008, Cain blamed conservatives' "economic illiteracy" for their opposition to the freshly passed Trouble Assets Relief Program.

"Wake up people!" admonished Cain with typical candor. "Owning a part of the major banks in America is not a bad thing. We could make a profit while solving a problem." Cain goes on to defend Treasury's decision to post-legislatively change TARP to buy preferred stock in banks rather than toxic mortgages. "You got a problem with that?" asks Cain. Apparently he didn't.

Cain reassures "free market purists" that the Treasury's stock purchase is "not nationalization because that would require government to own at least 51% of the entity for an indefinite period of time." (This is a relief, because some of us thought that government would use this foot in the door to force mergers, control salaries, and set lending rules. Oh, wait...)...

I came to this thread looking for the honest vetting of Cain in the headline. There are about three posts’ worth of that in the thread. The rest is back-and-forth between Perry fans and haters.

As someone who doesn’t understand many economic issues, I come to threads about economics and taxes and Wall Street sans occupiers because there are some interested and smart folks on those issues who post here.

I hope a few of them show up on this thread to talk about the subject of this article.

You have no point other than to obfuscate, cat whipped perrys letter supporting TARP.

Gov Rick Perry (then head of the Republican Governors Association) and Gov. Joe Manchin (then head of the Democrat Governors Association) wrote to Speaker Pelosi after TARP failed (Sept 29, 2008) and the markets were faltering, requesting:

[morning of Oct 1, 2008]: "We strongly urge Congress to leave partisanship at the door and pass an economic recovery package...It is time for Washington, D.C. to step up, be responsible, and do what's in the best interest of American taxpayers and our economy." http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/8878/perryletter.jpg

To wit, Associated Press headlined the letter: "Governors, Business Up Pressure for Bailout Bill"

Gov. Perry immediately issued a statement to make his position clear to the MSM:

“In a free market economy, government should not be in the business of using taxpayer dollars to bail out corporate America. Congress needs to take off its partisan gloves and work together to bring both short and long term stability to the credit markets. They need to stop blaming each other and start thinking about solutions that put the taxpayers of this country first.” Gov. Perry, Oct 1, 2008

Which brings me to recent quotes made by Gov. Rick Perry and one made by Herman Cain and where I see stark differences. I'm sure in the coming weeks as Gov. Perry and Herman Cain give policy speeches, we'll all have a better picture.

It sure looks like the Cain tax plan will succeed far more in “making the Federal government inconsequential” than Perry’s! For one thing, no more monolithic blocs of givers (ok, robbees) and takers.

...........They don't want an honest conversation or vetting. They really want to tear down any candidate that has better ideas (even one idea beats Perry's "I'll get back to you" non ideas) and is ahead of Perry in the polls.

I like a flat tax but I see no way of it ever getting passed in congress.

Cain agrees with you and thinks we need to make the transition in phases, not all at once.

At least Cain is willing to try and take the bold step of making an actual proposal.

Even among good candidates like Bachmann, Gingrich, Santorum, what do they propose? Nothing more than a reshuffle of the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Your snide "why don't you enlighten us" comment--did you actually read what I said? I very clearly posted that I don't know much about these issues, and while I did read the article, I was asking for folks who KNOW ABOUT THE TOPIC. Yep, that's so wrong.

I never said it was Cincinatus' Wife's job to lead the debate--where exactly did I say that? I happen to think she is a fine poster and have complimented her before on just that.

So why not stop your attempt to divert the thread and stick to the subject? Or are you another of those I was writing about, and are just flummoxed that I hit so close to home?

Doesn't his remark on TARP and his detailed response to owning banks go to the heart of how he thinks? A flip flop on it doesn't make the original statement any more telling.
