I don’t understand texting.

Why not just call the person and talk?

If they aren’t there leave a Voicemail.

I see people texting constantly while I’m on the subway, and it’s depressing. I know I sound like an old fogey, but I have to wonder, what did these people do before texting? What is it they’re texting that’s so incredibly important?

It just seems like such a time-waster. I text one or two friends occassionally, and the exchanges last one or two messages each. But then, the participants in my exchanges both have jobs.

Eh, consider me old enough to not ‘get’ texting.

But this was kinda stupid. How does the author know that the parent consistantly ignores her daughter? He doesn’t. What he know is that for that one brief period of time at that Starbucks, the mother was texting.

And then proceeds to condemn her for actions that he simply believes that she might be doing.

This is a ‘when will you stop beating your wife?’ kinda article.

I know way too many ministers who strode forth to save the world and lost their kids in the process.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I have, too, and it started **decades** before PCs and texting.

A Christian's **most** important mission field is his **own** children. His next most important mission field is the children of his congregation. This is true whether or not he is the minister or just a lowly congregant.

Yet...How many Christians and their ministers send their children into to the godless and socialist funded government schools? How many spouses of ministers support, uphold, establish, and promote godless indoctrination of children by working in these godless pits of depravity?

Gee! If the minister and his wife use the godless indoctrination centers and sweet little Mrs. Minister works there ( Don't you know? She loves cats and kids.), the godless indoctrination centers can't be that bad.

What kind of person would put a 1 year old (is he guessing the age?) on the floor of a commercial establishment? No one but an idiot!

A couple years ago at my school, I had a problematic student, a boy of about 14 who would not do any work whatsoever. No reading, no writing, no manners, practically feral. I told his mom she needed to come and sit with him. She came in, looking as childish and defiant as he was, and probably all of 29 years old, and texted the whole time. Utterly ignored her kid. Didn’t help him, didn’t encourage him, nothing. I was so disgusted...

Our office got a new manager, a young MIT grad. In her first meeting with us she said the way to report an absence to her is not call, or even e-mail. No, she wants us to Text her. The ages of those in our office ranges from 40 to 60 and we’re all staring at each other in disbelief, all thinking the same thing, “she wants us to what?”

It is mostly young women I see with the moronic, bug eyed, blank look staring at, yes, the little 3 inch screen - occassionally sucking back up the drool forming in their slack jawed mouth.

I suppose its just like my youth when my sisters would fight over the phone and take turns jabbering for hours on end.

4 well placed EMP weapons detonated about 120,000 ft above Los Angeles, New York, Washington and Chicago - that's be the end of that. Of course, that'd be the end of a lot of stuff too.

Texting is the most annoying way to communicate, ever.

I find it useful to tell people short messages, like "on my way", "running late see you in a bit". That kind of thing.

I work with a guy having an affair with a married woman. She's texting him all day long. Or should I say "sexting" him. I just don't understand it.

I guess I understand the need for diversions but I'd rather log onto FR or The Blaze and see what the commies are up to. :)

I like my old flip phone. Makes calls, takes calls, stores some phone numbers, and figures out my resturant tip. That’s it, and I don’t want it to do anything else.

Mom could have pointed out to baby the seagulls, the palm trees, the gorgeous skies, the warm sun, the six-foot three-inch trannie with a five o’clock shadow, the rats rummaging through the trash eating discarded ham and cheese paninis, and the ubiquitous metrosexuals with over-tweaked eyebrows who use seven words to order their special cup of Joe. It could’ve been both a bonding and educational familial exchange in one warm whack.

In spite of the snark, this writer gets it. It is actually relatively simple to have these types of interactions with a child all while going about one's daily business if one is committed to doing so. In my book, it's an essential part of developing a lasting relationship with a child that parents learn how to do so right from the start.

The proof is in the pudding -we have three amazing daughters who were raised not to think the sun shines out of their behinds, but with a sense that we were fully invested in guiding them to become great adults and we were going to have as much fun doing so along the way.

And fun was had, all while imparting life lessons along the way--even in the most mundane of activities - getting dressed in the morning, riding in the car, shopping for groceries - even homework.

Our oldest is now 21 and the twins are nearing 18. The payoff for our efforts? Smooth sailing during the turbulent teens, and self-reliant, level-headed young adults who make good decisions and consult us when they are unsure of what to do. Their friends express amazement at what "cool" parents we are-- that we actually talk to them and their friends like real people--something they could never see doing with their own parents.

Now suddenly we are on the precipice of becoming empty nesters, amazed at how short a time childhood is and very glad that we took the time to make the most of it.

......and on the other hand, you have kids ignoring the parents while they have those damn plugs stuck in their ears and are listening to god knows what. I would not allow that! I want to talk to my kids. I want to know what they are listening to. Meanwhile mom and/or dad are texting. No one is talking to each other. Sad situation, I’d say.

Hi all, I apologize for being off-list and off-the-streets for a few days, but I was lucky enough to become a father on September 17!

I personally believe that the obstination of some members of the NYCGA on not having demands has proved disastrous and resulted in a PR debacle. Invariably, almost all mainstream media accounts of the protests note that the demonstrators have confused ideas and are probably motivated by merely ideological motives.

Let alone texting, I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times in the last year when I’ve said to myself, Gee, wish I had a cell phone.
