Thank you for the insightful reply and I too apologize for the delayed response. Started construction on our new house last week and haven’t been able to sit down it seems.

The carbine I have is also a Universal. Searching online, I discovered there are no folding stocks for it... only the military version. From what I gather, the trigger housing is different on the Universal but I’m not sure if that is the only difference. Like you, I prefer the black tactical look and this rifle with the original wood stock doesn’t match the decor around here.

I don’t have any cost in this weapon. It was handed down to me. I’ll probably buy a stock and see if I can modify it to fit.

BTW, nice collection you have.

If you're good with a dremel, you can alter the folding stock for the military versions (a Choate stock is the one I've worked on), but it is more than just the trigger opening, the area where the gas block sits is wider and deeper for the Universal Carbine stock. Before I altered my Universal, I had replaced the parts in the bolt with heat treated Iver Johnson parts.

The next thing I did was order a nice new wooden stock from Numerich, in cased I ruined the wooden stock which came with the rifle.

I placed the shotgun collapsible w/pistol grip next tot he original stock and decided where to cut the stock so the action retainer screw would not be effected by the chop. Enjoy the project. It works really well when finished.

I could take pix of the dissassembled stock and post them for your help, if that would be needed. But I reckon it isn't so difficult as to need picture directions. Dremeling out the counter sink in the wooden remaining stock so the action still fits in when nut and washer are attached to the mounting/merging screws is the most delicate part.

BTW, I made the same modification of adding a pistol grip collapsible stock to an old 1022. With that one I snaded down the wooden stock to match up very closely to the profile of the collapsible pistol grip stock. I didn’t bother doing that with the Universal 30 cal and it doesn’t need any wood removed once the butt is sawed off and the collapsible added.

Ahh..I figured there was more to it than just the trigger opening. Choate stocks run about a hundred bucks on the low side so, I think I'm gonna try that. That will be my only investment other than the ammo I've purchased and it shouldn't be too difficult with a dremel tool.

Hey MHG, I really appreciate your input. I know more about it now than before and feel more comfortable trying to modify the thing. Thanks!

At one time Choate had two pistol grip stocks for M1Carbines, a fixed buttstock and a folding one. I bought the folding one for a Rockola Carbine I 'had', so I didn't dremel that stock. I bought the fixed buttstock pistol grip and altered it for an Iver Johnson which was in near pristine state ... the guy wanted to make it into a home defense weapon for his wife, out of a collection of five M1 Carbines he has. I also cut that buttstock down to her pull length. Makes a nice weapon.

I actually like the collapsible stock approach better since it will accomodate different size shooters. If I ever find one of the under-folding Univeral stocks, I'll alter that to be a collapsible using a shotgun after market stock.

Apparently Universal Carbines are beginning to have the non-heated treated bolts come apart and folks are trying to dump them at gunshows. I had a chance to pick one up in August for $200 and it appeared that the bolt would need new parts and the bolt carrier/slide would need welding on a crack. I didn't want to get into that right now so I passed. Wish I had snatched that one up.

Enjoy your project.

Hey mylife. Sorry to be on this old guntalk thread but.... Back on the 16th, I tried every two minutes to find the thread, and finally got it to come up, after you had been active for about 45 minutes.

Just wondering if the same thing is happening tonight (23rd). It's currently about 40 minutes after your normal start time, and I still can't find the thread. If there is one, please direct a comment to me, so I can find the thread via your comment. Thanks.
