Here is a picture and a paragraph at Columbia

This is from his academia.edu site

I study intertemporal choice with respect to environmental decisions. I wish to develop socially based interventions to help moderate excessive discounting. I am also especially interested in the organizing of research information for public use, and open access use of ideas for problem solving.

Does anyone have any WTF he's talking about?

My interpretation of what he wrote is that he doesn't like the way people think or act, and he is trying to figure out a way to change them.

Typical liberal megalomania.

In a sense, we all try to “change” people, but he is not talking about reasoned discourse appealing to rational interest, at least, that is how it appears to me. His assumptions are that things are bad because people are the way they are, and that he and others like him need to change people so that they will make the decisions that he approves of.

It’s like someone opened a dictionary, found some words that sounded impressive and just copied them down. It’s like something some of my students would have done when asked to write a report about something they knew nothing about and were too lazy to actually do any work on. Just copy some big words and string them together.
I am actually starting to think the part about forgiveness of student loans make sense. If this is what passes for a college degree, who would want to repay what you paid for it? Only I think the Universities should be the ones to repay the loans. I think the Govt should be clawing the money back from THEM since they are clearly cheating the consumers as they are selling them an inferior (worthless) product.

I haven't got a clue but it does sound a lot like the rantings Jared Loughner had on his website. Must be a college kid thing.

He’s saying he does absolutely nothing but saying it in a confusing manner so it sounds like he does do something. First part he is saying he finds out what the weather will be and if he should bring an umbrella or not. He then says he plays World of Warcraft on the internet and then checks his trust fund bank account.

Yup. Let me translate:

“I’m a clueless idiot who knows how to string a bunch of big words I don’t understand tougher, but social justice sounds neat.”

There ya go...

He’s talking about the trend in psychology of predicting human behavior, evidently with the goal of controlling it.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Yes, what he said is that he has not learned one damned thing in school except how to string together some big words of which he has no clue of their meaning but he figures that the people reading this slop are even dumber than he is so they will think he actually said something. This is what passes for education now. I would bet a picture of Ben Franklin that he could not pass a seventh grade public school history test from 1956.

“I study intertemporal choice with respect to environmental decisions.”- He studies how the change of time correlates with changes in environmental decisionmaking (i.e. changes the general view on the environment and what needs to be done to fix whatever environmental problems may be seen)

“I wish to develop socially based interventions to help moderate excessive discounting.”— I’m pretty sure there is a word missing between moderate and excessive but this seems to me to be that he tries to find ways to start social movements (i.e. community organizing) to help speed up social recognition of what he sees as environmental problems; i.e. use community organizing to get people to not “discount” the “severity” of environmental problems.

“I am also especially interested in the organizing of research information for public use, and open access use of ideas for problem solving.”- creat free technologically based systems to provide information about the environment to individuals and what they can do to save any ills he sees in the environment.

In other words:
1. Find ways to pretend that those who don’t agree with his views are dumb/stuck in the past/ignorant
2. Find ways to start community organizing people behind his ideas
3. Give free resources to the organized people

“I wish to develop socially based interventions to help moderate excessive discounting.”

He hates Walmart, Costco, Target, Kohls and other discounters which keep hippie boutiques on the fringes with their high prices.

“I am also especially interested in the organizing of research information for public use, and open access use of ideas for problem solving.”

He wants us with our tax $’s to buy computers and internet service and provide them free to the freeloaders, and he wants to be in charge of this and be paid for his intellect.

The boy probably can not tie his shoelaces but he can do math.
The discounting he is talking about isn't like getting a percentage off an item or total .
He is talking about mathematical psychology.
In reality he needs to be locked up in a padded cell and be put on some meds;)

Yes.
"I study intertemporal choice with respect to environmental decisions. I wish to develop socially based interventions to help moderate excessive discounting."
Intertemporal choice is the study of the relative value people assign to two or more payoffs at different points in time. What he is studying is the decision of consumers to value price and environmental effects at either different stages of their lives or different stages of economic progress of a country. I presume the latter. As countries become richer, citizens and consumers can afford to begin to care about the environment and make choices accordingly. What Hall wants is to find a way to influence these decisions and push them towards focusing on environmental cost over what he perceives to be short term economic gain.
"am also especially interested in the organizing of research information for public use, and open access use of ideas for problem solving."
He wants to educate the public through a combination of open information (but probably tailored by proper leftist moderators as in Wikipedia) and groupthink in place of top-down centralized planning.
