Perry's Jobs Plan: Drill, Baby, Drill
IBD Editorials ^ | October 17, 2011 | Editor

Election '12: A governor of an energy-rich state would use the "energy of the past" to create the jobs of the present rather than placing bets on solar panels and tilting at windmills.

During the GOP presidential debates, Gov. Rick Perry was criticized for taking all the credit for Texas' job-creation record since he was not responsible for the oil and gas in the ground that created many of those jobs.

True enough. But like Sarah Palin, the governor of another energy-rich state, he did foster a business-friendly climate as free from NIMBY regulations as possible, making the extraction of that energy a reality. He has fought the good fight against an Environmental Protection Agency that is at war with Texas — an EPA determined to shut down domestic fossil fuel production.

On Friday, Perry stood on a giant dock at a U.S. Steel plant in West Mifflin, Pa., to announce his plan to create an estimated 1.2 million jobs by freeing America's energy producers of burdensome federal regulations and reopening federal land and offshore water to energy exploration and production.

The Obama administration says it's already doing this, even after EPA regulations such as its cross-state pollution rule threatens to eviscerate energy production from coal. And after Obama's de facto moratorium on oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico through a glacial permitting process. Plus, outright bans remain elsewhere, including ANWR.

Perry said the other day that the one thing that would require action by Congress was drilling in Anwar. The rest of it could be done by executive order.

Oh thank you Jesus.

I have pounding this on FR for the last couple of days.

Cain is milling around the idea of 3-3-3 or even 1-1-1 for the ghetto tax rate. You know Atlanta, Chicago and so on. I wonder if we will see "Power zone" tax rates also in the range or 12-12-12 to offset the "empowerment zones" maybe Manhattan will pat 12-12-12 and the Bronx will pay 1-1-1 and maybe Harlem 2-2-2 and so on.

North Dallas can pay 12-12-12 and South Dallas 1-1-1. See everyone is happy except grandma who still gets a 9% tax hike on her prescription and groceries..oh excuse me, unless she lives in the funky funky.

” say they don’t favor states giving in-state college tuition to ILLEGAL aliens “

Perry doesn’t favor this .
“ Giving “ in state tuition to illegals makes
it sound like adults getting a free ride.

Well, Cain does have his poverty zones. And we have seen how effective fencing can be ever since drug runners found out how to use shovels.

But, even though I like Cain, I seriously doubt he wins even the nomination. As much as FR likes outsiders, the actual base in the nomination process is not us. The elites didnt give us McCain, voters did. And FR doesnt have a very good track record of picking the winner of the Republican nomination.

As for the heartless comment, I have never seen so many supposed conservatives running around on emotion saying “I wont vote for him because he called me a name.” But have fun hating Perry if it lets you sleep well at night.

Watching you stumble all over this thread and then defend empowerment zones is a beautiful thing.

I wonder how the good folks of Tampa Florida will enjoy hearing the old 9-9-9 plan is only for them and their pals in Pensacola while the kids down in Miami will be getting the discount plan but granny wont.

Well, the issue is that you tried to use something that he didnt say as a way to slam him, then got caught and tried to change the subject. So maybe you arnet a moron, maybe you are just a coward. But probably both.

I don’t hate the guy. I am just grateful that he won’t be President. He would be awful. I don’t think he would beat Obama anyway.

[If you don't mind my asking, are you land based, water based or both? I don't have much experience with land operations.]

SORRY! I did not read back on the posts until now and I missed this one;

The answer is, I am Land Based. I am a Directional Drilling Engineer/Consultant for one of the majors.(Unable to say)

I worked in Alaska at Prudhoe Bay since 1980, Williston Basin since 1999, and now the Marcellus Shale in the Pennsylvania/West Virginia regions.

Let me say, things are looking very bright these days. And I do appreciate your contribution and share in the industry!

I believe in empowerment zones. Most of the unemployed black Americans in this country are in these mostly economically depressed areas. It could be, and I’m only using this as an example, because we haven’t finished establishing the parameters yet. Instead of in a designated empowerment zone, it being 9-9-9, it could be, as an example only, 3-3-3.

What this does, because you have a lot of African-Americans located in cities like Detroit, disproportionately, it would encourage businesses to stay in business there or to move there. It would encourage people to work there, because if you live in the empowerment zone, you’re going to pay a smaller percentage in taxes.” Herman Cain CNN

I would not be so sure just yet, that Perry is finished. If I recall, you were most quick to point out when Perry was leading, about how Giuliani was dominating the polls a year away from the election and how badly that went for him.

It’s also interesting to note that you would never have predicted that McCain would ever take the nomination. Political experience always plays a strong role in who wins and who looses.

There is a reason that Perry gave his speech on a loading platform of a steel company in Pennsylvania. The oil patch uses lots and lots of steel. There are miles of drill string, plus couplings, nipples, blowout preventers and on and on for each well. Then there is the steel needed for the gathering pipelines and then even more for the transport pipelines. There are lots of jobs related to the oil patch which are not in the oil patch.

Then when the price of gas, diesel, heating oil, etc. goes down so does inflation and the cost of living for everyone.

Perry needs to expand his presentation a little to include all that.

Well, Im glad you dont hate him. I just see a lot of people throwing around the “heartless” thing as why they wouldnt support him, when they already did not support him before that.

For me, right now there are four people I could vote for (if it is not decided before Texas). Perry is one of them for four reasons:
1) Energy policy
2) His push for tort reform in Texas
3) His willingness to use the veto
4) Not having been part of the Federal Government, I think he would actually attempt to limit the scope.

That is what I worry about the congressmen running (except for Paul and maybe Newt.) They would probably tinker and try to cut, but I dont believe many people in the Federal Government would actually decrease the scope, starting with the executive branch. At least one wants to increase the scope of the Fed in order to push “conservative” values.

By the way it seems clear Cain doesn't have any empowerment zones in South Dakota or Idaho. What about the poor white trailer trash in Oklahoma? No breaks for them? I wonder what that does for the “revenue neutral” claim.

You really are shallow. Is that a requirement to be a La Raza Rick Perry supporter? Or are you just trying to stand out in the crowd, small as it is?

” Now, you’re backing a clown ..”

Do you think the United States Air Force would accept Perry for flight school and OCS if he was a clown ?
Flight school has rigorous and demanding standards
for acceptance ,
which Perry obviously met.
Captain Perry flew T 38 supersonic jets during his training
before he qualified to pilot the C 130 ,
which he flew world wide during his five years of service.
The only other candidate who served his
country was Ron Paul, also an Air Force Captain
and flight surgeon
during Vietnam.

Look man, I just posted Herman Cain's words to you. Got it? Do with them what you will. So South 40 is down with empowerment zones. I thought 9-9-9 was about everyone paying? Now we seem to be picking the winners and losers again.

Your conservative bonafides are suspect.
