Chinese toddler run over twice after being left on street
Telegraph ^ | October 17th 2011 | Peter Foster

Posted on 10/18/2011 4:00:38 AM PDT by Cardhu

A Chinese toddler was run over twice and ignored by nearly 20 passers-by in Guangdong Province in a case that has caused outrage around the world.

It is a story that has deeply unsettled millions in China, posing troubling questions about whether three decades of headlong economic development has left nothing but a moral vacuum in its wake.

It begins last Thursday when a two-year-old girl totters into a narrow lane in a wholesale market in the thriving industrial city of Foshan in Guangdong Province and is hit by a small, white van. The driver pauses, and then pulls away, crushing the child for a second time under his rear wheels.

It is not the accident itself, but what happens next — or rather doesn’t happen – that has left millions of ordinary Chinese wondering where their country is heading.

One by one, no fewer than 18 passers-by are seen on closed circuit television ignoring the girl as she lies, clearly visible in the road, haemorrhaging into the gutter. Not a single one of them stops to help.

The first is a young man in a white T-shirt and trainers. He walks on past the prone form of girl who is by now bleeding profusely, without a second glance.

Next comes a cyclist who wobbles slightly to avoid the dying child and then pedals on, turning his head back momentarily, as if to check he really did see a child dying in the street.

As the pool of blood spreads, a third pedestrian comes by, clearly sees the bleeding girl, but steps out into the small lane to give her a wide berth.

All three could have moved the girl, later named by her parents as 2-year-old Yueyue, but none did, allowing another, larger vehicle following down the lane a few minutes later to run her over for a second time.

...Others blamed China’s compensation culture for the apparent show of callousness, recalling a famous 2006 judgment when a Good Samaritan who helped a woman get to hospital was wrongly ordered to pay her compensation.

Reminds me of a mugging that took place in NY about 30years ago where over 20 people witnessed it but no one called the police for over half an hour.

Same thing no one wanted to get involved.

She was run over three times, twice by the first vehicle.

The first driver had to know that he ran over her because he felt the bump from the tires going over the child. He even stopped for a few seconds before he drove off and drove over her the second time. As bad as that was, you also had nearly 20 people walk by as if she was just a road-killed squirrel. And an another van drove over her before some homeless woman called for help.

Chinese society have got some major issues.

There was another incident a few years ago (I *think* it was on NY) where an old man was dying on the sidewalk and people just marched on.

I think that part of the problem is human nature. When you pack people in a tight space, they go on auto-pilot, blocking everything around them out. Even if they notice, they ‘fall back on their training’ and just carry on with their day.

At least in ignoring a crime victim, the people who turn their heads don't want to put themselves in danger...they are afraid

there is nothing to fear here by stopping to help a dying child

As for excuses for China... read the novels of Pearl Buck.
Especially the treatment of girl children.

Not just China, though, Japan Korea, arabs, Russians, other cultures, too ... even our culture of abortion and a POTUS who votes- twice - that legally it is OK for doctors to ignore a dying infant born alive after an abortion Just ask how so many cultures can treat their children and helpless as so expendable

Talk to our troops who served in the Pacific in WW2, read about the Japanese rape of Nanking, ask those who liberated the POW and death camps, read about Stalins starvation of Ukraine, his genocide against ethnics, Mao's campaigns.... North Korea today.....too many to even list

There is a callousness and cruelty in mankind, and accepted more in some cultures, that has always been there.

Kitty Genovese - from Wiki:

The circumstances of her murder and the lack of reaction of numerous neighbors were reported by a newspaper article published two weeks later;[4] the common portrayal of neighbors being fully aware but completely nonresponsive has later been criticized as inaccurate.[5] Nonetheless, it prompted investigation into the social psychological phenomenon that has become known as the bystander effect (or “Genovese syndrome”)[6] and especially diffusion of responsibility.

Here we go; here is a golden opportunity to blame capitalism for all of the troubles in the world.

The moral vacuum could not be caused by a communist culture that is openly antagonistic to God.

Dispose of God and all is permitted.

The Communist Chinese are one giant parasite instead of individuals, and the loss of one child in an over populated society isn’t going to hurt it, especially considering it’s a useless girl instead of a boy. I’m surprised it wasn’t aborted.

Why would this surprise anyone in a country with forced abortion?

“Honey I’m pregnant!”

“Thats wonderful! Whats our one allowed baby going to be?”

“A girl!”

“What?! Kill it!!!!”

China has become a nation of communist savages and this event is only newsworthy because it was captured on video.

Just yesterday I went and changed a lightbulb on the porch of an elderly neighbor after hearing her say that her son in Chicago would be here next week to change it.

Kitty Genovese’s murderer has a parole hearing November 2011. NEXT MONTH!!!! (read the whole article - he’s a serial killer)

More from Wiki:
Moseley’s first parole hearing in 1984 included his defense that “For a victim outside, it’s a one-time or one-hour or one-minute affair, but for the person who’s caught, it’s forever.”[12] Moseley remains in prison after being denied parole a thirteenth time on March 11, 2008. Moseley’s next parole hearing is scheduled for November 2011.[14]

When my husband was in China, he saw something similar. A car had hit a person on a bicycle. The car just stopped, drug the bicyclist out from under his car and drug him to the side of the road. People just walked by like nothing ever happened. IMHO, a culture that embraces death warps the true human nature of its citizens. Kindness, sympathy, empathy, and compassion are simply erased and replaced with coldness and callousness. IMHO.

I come from a small town where a woman murdered her boyfriend and her mother helped cut up the body into fish bait

Mom was the butcher at the local Acme

These is no shelter from mankind’s worst traits in any town in the world

Ignoring a child being abused and tortured by its family- almost the norm for America. Just read the stories from social services after the children are abused and murdered. Almost always, “someone knew”.

Read about the case of “baby P” in Britain.

But ignoring a dying chld in the roadway would be extremely unusual for America or Europe, the norm for India, China, parts of Southeast Asia where life is short and cheap.

And mothers celebrating death and teaching children to kill other children and die in the process, in the name of religion...well, we know who does that

Well sure, capitalist economic development is responsible for the moral vacuum.  What they need to do is revert back to the bone-crunching poverty that Godless communism produces and all the moral ills of society will be fixed. A veritable Utopia.  No God needed.  Only the iron fist of a communist government needed.

I'm sure God had a good reason. Didn't the Amalekites refuse to let the Hebrews pass through their territory, and also attacked them at some point? If I remember correclty, they also practiced human sacrifice.

Exactly. I grew up in a small town of around 300 people. Shoveling snow off my great grandmother's sidewalk meant shoveling snow off the sidewalks of her elderly neighbors as well and it became habitual.

3 decades or even 300 years ago it wouldn't have been the same? I don't think so. It's got nothing at all to do with economic development. What is the logic in that?

Not necessarily true in some Asian cultures just by being associated with the event you attach a type of responsibility to yourself. In this Cade I’m sure there was fear of the authorities assuming some complicity as well fir bringing attention to such a terrible thing. I wonder what happened to the homeless lady after.

not just Asian, also muslim

You in a car accident in Thailand or Turkey? Especially if a farang? Keep going!

Knew of a GI in a 3rd world muslim country who killed a girl who committed suicide by stepping in front of his car and he had to be hastened out of that country to avoid being jailed

they are all fatalistic about the will of Allah or heaven or whatever, accidents are fate....yada yada yada

but if you are involved, you are guilty. Especially if you are foreign

Again, there are people in America who would do this, just not so many we hope. But at the risk of prejudice, there is something “different” from us, about the Asian (and some other cultures’) views and treatment of human life.

In the US remember the guy who ran over the baby carriage and kept going dragging the baby for miles leaving Grandma and everyone else screaming at him? And the woman who hit the pedestrian and drove home and parked in her garage with the corpse stuck in her windshield?

yeesh

I found it interesting that the woman that DID come to her aid was someone considered probably as the lowest of the low in society there. Trash picker looking for recycleable items. In Turkey where I am a LOT, people look down on them as I’m sure they do there. The people that walked by were the more well-to-do, average people. It’s always the folks like that woman that will do what’s right. Hope many rewards come her way.
