Retiring 'Fighting Sioux' nickname may cost $750,000

UND officials have estimated the cost of retiring the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo at nearly $750,000, not counting the cost of changes that may occur at the privately-held Ralph Engelstad Arena.

University President Robert Kelley sent the estimates last week to a budget analyst and auditor with the North Dakota Legislative Council, in response to a request made by Rep. Mike Schatz, R-New England.

Schatz, who has declared that he will not support an attempt in next month's special legislative session to clear the way for retirement of the name and logo, said he asked for the cost information so he could attach a fiscal note to any bill contemplating that action.

"I wanted all the legislators to know the figures that the president estimated it would cost," Schatz said Tuesday. "I think that's been left out of the conversation so far."

The bulk of Kelley's cost estimate is $575,000 to develop a new nickname and logo, counting research, development, branding and launching. That also would include logo redesigns for special groups, such as Sioux Kids Club and Sioux Crew.

Yeah, as I recall he also said he’d significantly restrict the use of the arena if that nickname changed.

Never understood why to avoid NCAA sanction and at the same time screw them, the school didn’t change the name to the “the fighting sue” and have a lawyer as their mascot. Far more scary than any old Injun anyway, and even if it is an odd name, it’s not any worse than the Cardinal (a color) or the Banana Slugs.

As to the Redskins mascot that seems to be on its way to discard everywhere, seemed to me an easy transition that didn’t even require a name change. Just have a tourist with a white-zinced nose as your mascot. Loud shirt, camera, sunglasses, red sunburnt skin, you could even have new cheers incorporating stock tourist phrases like:

“Where’s the bathroom?!?!”
“We missed the turn, Martha!”
“Say cheese!”

Ask the entire Souix Nation. If they say dump then do it, if they say keep it then tell the NCAA to stuff it and to SHUT UP.

The logo was designed by a Bennet Brien, a noted American Indian artist and sculptor, whom I have met.

It is not cartoon-cute, and is not demeaning in any way.

The Spirit Lake Sioux have been pretty aggravated--but not over the nickname, they are mad that it is being 'forcibly retired'. Check out the articles Spirit Lake Sioux committee warns of ‘severe’ consequences if nickname goes and here and the website www.savethefightingsioux.com

As for me, I demand that any school mascot who references a Scottsman be renamed.

I presume that list would begin with the Carnegie-Mellon University Tartans. How about alternatives?

the Bytes
the Fighting Foreign Students
the Leftist Actors
the Arrogants
the Big Student Loan
the Tarts
etc.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The artist who created the University of North Dakota’s current Fighting Sioux logo says he is proud of it and disappointed by its imminent demise but that life goes on .Bennett Brien, a Chippewa Indian who created the current Fighting Sioux logo for the University of North Dakota, says the politically correct crowd has “misinterpreted” what it symbolizes.”
“There are so many other problems we’ve got, real problems. Why spend all your energy on this?” Bennett Brien told the Grand Forks Herald.
Brien, who is Chippewa, created the American Indian head emblem for UND in 1999, when controversy over the school’s nickname was heating up and critics objected to earlier logos they found to be demeaning.

"Cardinal is also a bird. My HS was nicknamed the Cardinals."

It's not a bird in the one instance it is used. The "Cardinals" are not the same as the Stanford Cardinal. See http://www.gostanford.com/school-bio/stan-nickname-mascot.html

Interesting that given the thread topic, the Cardinal name was only revived after Stanford booted its own Indian mascot (I didn't know that before reading the link myself).

Anyway, I still think Ole Miss lost out by not taking Akbar when they had the opportunity.
