Second hand smoke MIGHT be bad for those with asthma but not all with asthma are effected by it...I am 72 been smoking since I was 13, and just recently developed chronic bronchitis but have an inhaler that stops the wheezing that I have in the morning....Good gracious, it took... decades...of smoking directly to finally affect my lungs...sure is a dangerous habit....alcohol kills more people than tobacco, directly and via drunk driving. The government went after tobacco (read democrats) originally because tobacco gave 99% donations to republicans...That goes back a couple of decades also...

The governments attack on alcohol ie: Prohibition didn't ;work out too well, so they just used a new approach to controlling human behavior...

The success on tobacco lead to regulations on toilet, showers, light bulbs, what you can and cannot do on your own property, and also what few people realize, that by a year certain (I forgot which year it is) there will be no more washing machines that top load. The government decided they use too much water, but the front loaders cost twice as much...In a few years they will be outlawed to produce...

Interesting that one small success, like a snow ball going down hill, just gets bigger and bigger... I like the WW2 saying "smoke um if you got um"

Its sad that my grandchildren have far less personal freedom than I did growing up. same goes for the anti smoker nazi's grandchildren...

Logic fails..

Its a personal loss of freedom, you must love it. The mayor of new york now bans smoking outside in "public" parks. That would include public walkways and side walks, am just waiting for him to outlaw smoking in your own cars, cause the smoke escapes into "public air space"

Don't you just love the mob looking out for your health...yep, I'll bet you do.

If an apartment owner doesn't want smoking in his building that's his right, same with restaurants and bars. Those that clap when the government makes those rules are truly stupid....

Greetings Tsgt:

Private VFW/DAV/AL halls must enforce this smoking ban too. Constant complaint: Veterans fought against this style of government tyranny during their youth, yet suffer it today.

Cheers,
OLA

The voters of Ohio, through a democratic process, decided overwhelmingly that they did not want smoking in public places. Get over it.

The voters also overwhelmingly elected an Austrian paperhanger Chancellor of Germany in the last century.

The Constitution exists to protect the rights of the few against the tyranny of the many.

So, what's next? Anything that only one person in five does is fair game.

Anything.

Dangerous precedent, there. If there is a market for a particular environment, provide it and the world will beat a path to your doorstep. If not, the idea will die on the vine. Imposing it on the unwilling because the idea is popular does not make it right.

It never ceases to amaze me how many FReepers actually support these laws.

As I have said often, most people have no concept of freedom. Even FReepers are not immune.

Yeah, well your right to swing your fist ends at the tip of my nose, and your “right” to smoke ends at my inhale. Stop equating smoking with true liberties. It’s a vice, not a right.

What part of private property rights do you not understand?

This is not a “right” to smoke issue. This is my right to permit smoking in my establishment. What part of my right to that do you not understand??????

Name one person whose death certificate lists as the cause of death, “Second-hand smoke.”

Name just one.

We will wait.

OBTW, your right to fart ends at my inhale. Of course, the human body produces a couple of quarts of farts a day, so if we plug you up, you die.

When I am in my home or business, your presence is optional. To avoid your inhaling anything you don’t want to, you don’t have to enter. How simple. If the non-smoking establishments advertise as such (or the smoking ones do), you as an informed adult can decide whether or not you want to expose yourself to that environment. See how simple that is. And get the hell off my lawn.

Who said anything about deaths. I just don’t like it blown in my face. Smoke yourself dead in your own home, I don’t give a rip. But in a public place, snuff it.

Just like you want to keep the blacks out, right? Sorry, but there is a legitimate police power vested in local governments to eradicate such things.

Ah, the race card. The last resort of those with no argument. The only right you have to enter my establishment is that which I grant you. You have no more right to tell me I can’t permit smoking in my establishment than I have to light a cigarette in yours.

If there is a legitimate police power in the local government eradicate such things, there is an equal police power to mandate them.

I support your right not to go to a restaurant, club or bar that allows smoking. No one forced you to go there. I also support the owner’s right to allow smoking.

Unfortunately, it is too late for the bars and restaurants that have closed as a result of this ban.
