Perry Commits to Flat Tax, Reforming Entitlements
The Weekly Standard ^ | October 19, 2011 | Daniel Halper

Las Vegas - In a brief speech this morning at the Western Republican Conference, Texas governor Rick Perry announced that in six days he would reveal an “economic pro-growth package that will create growth” and encourage investment in America. The plan will involve major tax reform, entitlement reform, a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, an abolishment of earmarks, and a recommitment to energy exploration in the United States.

“Our long term growth requires a fundamental tax reform,” Perry said. Therefore, his plan “starts with scrapping the three million words of the current tax code—starting over with something simple: a flat tax.”

“I want to make the tax code so simple that even Timothy Geithner can file his taxes on time,” the Texas governor said, taking a jab at the treasury secretary who had major errors in his tax returns that were revealed after he was nominated by President Barack Obama for his present job.

“The second part of my plan involves the serious commitment to spending, realizing alternatives” to the path taken by Europe, Perry said. In this vein, the Texas governor went on to affirm his commitment to “reforming entitlements, preserving those commitments to those who are on Social Security … and those approaching the age of retirement.”

Perry did not give further details on what the new flat tax rate would be (or how it might work) or on how he would reform entitlements.

On the balanced budget amendment, Perry committed to campaigning in all fifty states, if necessary, in order to get the provision added to the Constitution.

And he promised to end earmarks: “My plan is to end earmarks for good.”

In revealing tidbits of his economic plan, Perry played up his anti-establishment credentials.

About time another candidate comes out with an actual plan, instead of jumping all over Cain’s.

Of course, I’ll believe it when I see it.

That is correct, he has. Some new plan, right after someone tells him what it is and how it works. Sounds like obummer. Wonder who's work they will cut and paste this time.

I still oppose radical changes to the tax code, preferring an incremental approach that won’t disrupt the economy and screw everybody who actually PLANS for their financial future.

But at least Perry isn’t saying the tax code is responsible for our problems, instead correctly labelling tax reform as an item which will improve future growth.

Some new plan, right after someone tells him what it is and how it works.

Cain had three economists write HIS plan. One thinks they screwed it up. Cain has to point people to their write-up on his web site when he's asked about the plan.

If you read Moore's comments about it, and if you look at the plan, it is clear Cain asked for a good, sound-bite political tax plan. Cain wants Fairtax, but didn't think it was a political winner. So they created 9-9-9, which isn't the best plan but was a great sound bite. Moore says now that they screwed up because they didn't realize how people would feel about the sales tax part, and suggests they re-work it to remove that. Because WHAT is in the 9-9-9 plan isn't as important as how politically popular it is.

That’s good conservative stuff, albeit boiler-plate. Looking forward to some details.

This will position Perry to the right of everyone on stage in regards to taxes, which means everytime 999 gets brought up Perry will now will get votes, and it will make Romney look even more like more of the same.

Very smart move by Perry.

Look ... Gov. Perry ... this ALL SOUNDS GREAT ... I'm looking forward to your Flat-Tax Plan (aka Steve Forbes 1998) ...

But there's JUST.ONE.SINGLE.ISSUE.THAT.YOU'VE.SCREW-UP.ON.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

"Free" taxpayer subsized college money for ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

You, Sir ... might (very well) have the VERY BEST tax-plan for the 2012 election ...

What how can that benefit me ... when I've having to pay "extra" (sooner-or-later) to pay for the college education of "damned" ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ?

I hope that your campaign reads this ...

You WILL NEVER get my vote unless you RENOUNCE "free" college tuition for ...

"Damned" ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ...

Rock it, Rick! I love substance and a record!!

I support the outline 100%, of course the devil will be in the details.

It is a shame Perry has been such a dud in the debates. Outside of immigration (which is admittedly a big issue), he is pretty much everything I want in a candidate.

It may be too late for him now through.

I have the sense Perry is not going to be rushed into stating a Perry policy on anything until he has all his ducks in a row, similar to the way he waited to announce his jobs plan recently. He’ll take the slings and arrows while he formulates his plans. Slow and steady....

Are there details in a flat tax?

One by one, the Conservative candidates are going to be dragged kicking and screaming to the realization that immediate and dramatic proposals are needed and that a promise of a total reversal of “O” policies HAS to be expressed clearly and consistently....if they want to be considered for nomination! Lets see some spine here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS kind of radicalization of American politics took place when “O” was nominated and the Conservatives have to get with program...it ain't politics as usual anymore.... the GOP has openly chosen the OLD WAYS!!

But don’t get me wrong — We don’t need a President with good ideas. We need a President who will RECOGNIZE good ideas, who will SEEK OUT good ideas, who knows how to get good ideas through the political process, who knows how to surround himself with people who can communicate good ideas to him.

If 9-9-9 was a good idea, ANY of our presidential candidates could push it through congress. We don’t need Cain to get 9-9-9, if it is actually a plan that would work.

The question is, which candidate has shown the most experience at getting good ideas, recognizing them, and pushing them through the political process. Which candidate has been able to find ways to implement conservative principles through legislation? Which candidate can articulate conservative principles in a way that encourages others to think of good ideas to implement those principles?

There is one candidate running now who has written a book espousing conservative principles, and who has shown the ability to take good conservative ideas, get to get them implemented and to govern by them. There is one candidate who has both voiced the sound principles of federalism and a limited federal government, and has also implemented executive policies which enact those conservative principles.

From the looks of this, his campaign prepared a timetable, bringing out plans at certain times with most likely an ad campaign in conjunction with it. Big-time politics.
