If the guy in the engine room hadn't gotten flustered and done what was appropriate for the older ships he had served on the ship wouldn't have hit the iceberg either. Woah - this is a new one on me. Please explain further.

I can't remember at the moment where I read it, but remember that it was in the past year. The controls for full ahead on the Titanic were exactly backward from what they were on earlier ships. So when the order came down for full reverse or full stop, the guy receiving the order acted as though he was back on an earlier ship and that resulted in the Titanic steaming full ahead. By the time it got straightened out, it was too late to correct for. Supposedly this guy had left a deathbed confession somewhere in Great Britain. There was supposed to have been a cover-up and he wanted the truth known before shuffling off his mortal coils.
