Rowing for their lives: The poignant photographs of the aftermath of the sinking of the Titanic

Astonishing unseen photographs of the aftermath of the Titanic disaster have emerged after 99 years. The black and white pictures show an iceberg at the site of the tragedy - and may even be the one that sunk the luxury liner. Another image shows two lifeboats packed full of survivors rowing for safety following the 1912 disaster in which 1,517 people died.

Survivors from the Titanic are pictured here rowing towards rescue ship the Carpathia in what appear to be relatively calm seas

Danger ahead: Taken from a rescue vessel, this photograph shows an iceberg in the distance - perhaps even the one that sank the luxury liner

The archive of letters and photographs are owned by the family of survivors John and Nelle Snyder, who were returning from their honeymoon when the tragedy struck. The pair are pictured here in the clothes they escaped in The remarkable archive includes a survivor's letter containing a moving first hand account of the sinking, which tells how the rows of portholes 'disappeared one by one'. It was written by first class passenger John Snyder who was returning to America on the doomed liner with his new bride Nelle from their honeymoon. He described how they were woken following the 'bump' and that he owed his life to his wife who made him see what was going on even though he wanted to go back to bed. He explained how they were almost the first people in the life boat because others thought it safer to stay on the 'big boat'.

No it wasn’t the Jews, it was Bush’s fault.

Wasn’t there a rule of “women and children first” in the lifeboats? That can’t be, this was well before the age of feminism. Men are the source off all things bad.

Obama will NEVER have a physique like that — never, ever!

It's a Chris Matthew's fantasy - and in Chris' mind he'll always have that body.

Cool!
It is interesting that the first story about the newly revealed photos says that 1,517 people died when the Titanic sank, but the story about the Straus couple that follows says 1,495 people were lost. I guess they’ll never know the exact number for certain - - after all, Jack Dawson’s name wasn’t listed on any manifest.

Woah - this is a new one on me. Please explain further.

I can't remember at the moment where I read it, but remember that it was in the past year. The controls for full ahead on the Titanic were exactly backward from what they were on earlier ships. So when the order came down for full reverse or full stop, the guy receiving the order acted as though he was back on an earlier ship and that resulted in the Titanic steaming full ahead. By the time it got straightened out, it was too late to correct for. Supposedly this guy had left a deathbed confession somewhere in Great Britain. There was supposed to have been a cover-up and he wanted the truth known before shuffling off his mortal coils.

Since I knew the story I had no desire to see a three hour Love Boat episode.

Besides, I knew we were further doomed as a society when people would get mad at me when I told them the ship sank before they saw the movie.

I’m not kidding!

The conspiracy is bigger than I thought. Makes me wonder what conspiracy theorists did before the internet.

Read their Bibles -

Revelation 17:3 And he carried me away fn the Spirit into a wilderness; and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, full of blasphemous names, having seven heads and ten horns.

Rev 17:4 The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her immorality,

Rev 17:5 and on her forehead a name was written, a mystery, “BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”

I’m calling bs.

This was long before the “media age” of instant cameras and what not. Cameras were heavy pieces of equipment. Explain to me how a couple fled for their lives, exhausted from a night of rowing, listening to a night of screaming, sobbing and dying, finally being rescued and their thought was:

“Look, honey! A Kodak moment! Let’s get a picture!”

How exactly were they able to flee without damaging the camera and the film? Then to be developed clearly back when photo development methods were expensive and rudimentary compared to today’s methods? And then it somehow stays hidden for 99 years?

I’m not buying it. It’s photoshopped or a total hoax.

Assuming that you're serious with this (given the other posts, it could be a wrong assumption), understand that the Kodak Brownie - which I believe was the first low-cost "snapshot" camera - went into production in 1900 and was in widespread use by 1912.

After my Grandmother passed away a while back we discovered multiple boxes - BIG boxes - filled with snapshot pictures that dated back to the turn of the 20th Century. Turns out that not only had she been a real snapshot aficionado, so had her mother (born in the early 1890s) and her mother's parents. So we have a collection of thousands of pictures, taken over the course of over 110 years, of our entire family tree going back six or seven generations. Although the snapshots are fascinating, the real prize discovery (which I now have possession of) is the studio picture of my great grandmother's great-great grandfather.

Wasn’t there a rule of “women and children first” in the lifeboats? That can’t be, this was well before the age of feminism. Men are the source off all things bad.

The first lifeboats launched from the Titanic were only partially full. Few thought the ship would actually sink and wanted to go, so male passengers were allowed aboard to man the oars.

One of the many controversies of the sinking is that those initial launches did not return to the ship to pick up more passengers. This may have been partly due to difficulties in getting more people onto them while they were already in the water (the process was to fill the boats with people first, THEN lower them. So to put more passengers aboard they'd have to be hauled back up), but also because the crew manning the boats didn't want to deal with a mass of panicked passengers trying to scramble aboard ...

The Titanic was doomed as soon as they stated it was unsinkable. No way the Powers That Be were going to let that one pass.

An older friend of mine said that they had plaques that said, “Not even God can sink this ship.”

I forget if he said he saw a pictures, but he was emphatic that such plaques were in many places on the Titanic.

Lord willing, I will never bet against God.

I recall an interview on some documentary about the Titanic. The woman was a very young child at the time, but recalled that her grandmother told the family it was doomed to sink after they bragged it was unsinkable.
God will not be mocked.
