Rick Perry's Support for a Flat Tax Cheers Steve Forbes (Forbes, Gramm advising Perry)
WSJ ^ | Oct 19, 2011 | John D. McKinnon

Rick Perry's embrace of a flat tax makes the tough-talking Texas governor the unlikely political heir to Steve Forbes, the nerdy publisher and erstwhile presidential candidate.

Mr. Forbes, who ran in 1996 and 2000 and now is advising the Perry camp, said that the "concept remains the same" as his own flat tax plan from the 1990s.

Perry Says He Backs Flat Tax, Drawing a Contrast With Romney

"Besides Mr. Forbes's plan, several other Republican leaders like Phil Gramm (also now advising Mr. Perry, according to Mr. Forbes) and Dick Armey have proposed their own versions over the years but with little traction.

Grover Norquist, the founder of Americans for Tax Reform, an influential conservative group, said all the candidates were moving toward a flatter tax structure. "Now it's a consensus position in the center-right," he said, compared with 15 years ago, when Mr. Forbes's plan was attacked by other Republican candidates.

Has Perry given any indication of a VP? Rubio works for me.

What is this, two weeks in a row where Perry releases a major plan after a debate? It is smart thinking though, there’s a lot less you have to defend if you release major plans after a debate, and Perry has a month or so until the next debate.

Are we talking about a flat tax that is an income tax? Some sort of ostensible non-progressive form?

If so, then no thanks!

To me, that is a half-assed solution which still preserves the most Tyrannical form of taxation ever imposed on a Free people.

The federal income tax, in whatever form, and the IRS, should be eliminated altogether. Sorry if that makes me some kind of raving extremist. So be it.

"Mr. Forbes cites the growing list of countries that have moved to the flat tax as one reason for the surge of interest in the U.S. The flat tax has been especially prevalent in the emerging countries of the former Soviet bloc. The lackluster U.S. economy is adding further to the urgency. Supporters of the flat tax – including many conservatives – believe it would accelerate growth by making the tax climate more business-friendly"

” Drawing A Contrast With Romney “

Can’t you just see Romney Come Lately saying in the next debate
“ Of course I support a flat tax ! “

Perry/Rubio 2012.

Would be a great ticket but Rubio said he was not interested in VP, maybe he will change his mind.

Perry/Palin?

That’s what I prefer, the flat tax. I sure hope it gets some traction this go-round.

I’m glad he supports it, but I’d like to see him make it the centerpiece of his campaign. This is why Cain is making such a big run — most conservatives consider progressive [bracket] taxation and the tax code in general to be a complete abomination. ...which of course it is. (It’s the VAT part of Cain’s plan that’s the problem, not the flat tax part). I’d also like to see Perry emphasize that the estate tax is killing small businesses, and vow to eliminate it.

No serious person running for President must release a major plan on any issue in a 30 seconds sound bite within a debate format. Many folks are really cheapening the Presidency by being so obsessed with debates.

Presidents do not and must not govern in 30 seconds sound bites and 3 seconds zingers.

Seriously folks, stop the insane overrating of the importance of debates.

Perry seems to now be stealing stuff from other candidates. I guess he figures that 9-9-9 got Cain to the top - he might as well steal the idea from him and try to climb back out of the abyss.

Perry is a typical establishment politician. He is now trying to morph into something popular since he has been outed for the fake he really is.

Tea Party folks won’t buy what he is trying to sell.

Steve Forbes? Interesting . . .didn’t Herman Cain endorse him in the 2000 GOP primaries?

flat tax > 999, hands down

9-9-9 is totally different than a flat tax. A flat tax would be better.
