After outlawing special last-meal requests for prisoners on death row, the Texas prison system has now gone one better: They're outlawing meals, period, for everyone.
Since April, the New York Times reports, inmates have not been provided lunches on Saturdays and Sundays.
It's a cost-cutting measure: an effort to trim $2.8 million in food-related expenses from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's 2011 budget, which makes up just a small part of the state's multi-billion-dollar budget shortfall. They've made other changes elsewhere say powdered milk instead of actual milk, or sliced white bread instead of hamburger buns. The practice is already in effect in Ohio and Arizona prisons; Georgia goes further, serving two meals per day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The American Correctional Association recommendations state inmates should receive three meals per day, seven days a week. But Daron Hall, the president of the ACA, has no problem with Texas's new policy:
"In the economic climate we're in, you're asked to do some creative and inventive things."
John Whitmire, the Democratic state senator whose kvetching led to the last-meal ban, said this:
"If they don't like the menu, don't come there in the first place."

"If they don't like the menu, don't come there in the first place."
We have a winner!
To the uninitiated, Gawker is a left-wing, liberal orifice. BTW:If you happen to notice, the author, Seth Abramowitz, failed Grammar 101, basic article-writing class.
Here comes a lawsuit. And I bet they win.
“...say powdered milk instead of actual milk...”
Why are they serving milk in the first place? Do they have 5-year olds in there?
The idea behind incarceration is punishment by deprivation of liberty. If the punishment is supposed to be starvation, rape or brutality, that's what they ought to be sentenced to.
They should get moldy bread and water.
Give them the ‘school lunch’ that Moochelle says is killing us..................
this is just a tip to Prison folks everywhere
pick a group of decent cooking prisoners like Mob guys, Cubans, Greeks, Southern rural blacks etc
and make a budget and deliver the food as promised and let them prepare it and make sure everyone is fed...no favoritism
and you will save money and have better prepared food
so much food destined for prisons doesn’t get to the prisoners
it ends up sold by staff, at guard’s recreation center, the wardens freezers and whatnot
you take almost any joint except maybe Arpaio’s and you will find steaks and shrimp and all sorts of goodies on the prison food manifest that I promise you the prisoners never see
it’s wasteful...kickbacks too another big issue
many prisoners who can afford it eat most food of their own they buy at commissary etc and cook at microwave or with a stinger
no one watches this stuff so much since empathy for locked up folks is not exactly high on the empathy scale hence a prime place for staff to make out
by the way
anyone named Seth is probably a liberal
Cereal and milk is cheap for breakfast..in bulk
Don’t count on it. Out here in AZ, Sheriff Joe (our hero) serves green balony (died to make it wretched looking) on day old bread and tells the folks, “If you don’t like the time, don’t do the crime.” As much as the bleeding hearts try to sue, he continues to win. Go Joe.
White bread! How Racist!!!
THAT might be a MAJOR deterrent to crime.
Powdered milk? Blech. Double-Blech. TRIPE-Blech.
My Mom made us try that crap once as a potential grocery-money-saving venture. Fortunately, she hated it as much as we did -- and forty-some years later I can ALMOST forget that awful taste.
If I was a criminal and knew I would be served powdered milk in prison I would immediately go straight, go to college and get a real job.
Yep, the Goodfellas ate better in the joint than they did outside.
Two meals a day is not "starvation." There are many hard-working, law-abiding Americans who eat only two meals a day because they are too busy trying to make a buck in the Obama depression and/or they don't have the money for three meals a day.
Now THAT is cruel and unusual punishment (hamburgers and hot dogs on sliced bread are one of my pet peeves).
"If they don't like the menu, don't come there in the first place."
comes from a Texas democrat liberal.
A fellow like George Bush would be considered a conservative in most of the country. He's not in Texas.
Maybe the Texas Department of Corrections should just announce they are observing Sharia law three meals per week for everyone as sort of an outreach to their disproportionate number of Muslim jailbirds.
F-— ‘em, feed ‘em beans! (Thrice, no twice daily)
Actually, wheat and wheat byproducts can be “racist” ~ for folks who are gluten intolerant. What they need to do is feed everybody grits. They are possibly the best hypoallergenic food on the market and they are much cheaper than bread!
The 3 meals a day habit, in my opinion, was when the farmers/workers got up at 3 or 4 a.m., ATE and hit the fields. By Noon they came in for lunch, back to the fields and worked until about 6 or 7 p.m., then had supper. These people worked HARD, the time span between meals made them understandably hungry.
Today no one works that hard, and most do not need 3 meals a day, but to each their own.
