Why did the White House cancel a Rose Garden bill-signing for the Free Trade Agreements, opting instead for a behind-closed-doors event?
On Tuesday, the White House issued a press release announcing that On Friday, October 21st, President Obama will sign the Korea, Panama and Colombia Free Trade Agreements and the renewal of Trade Adjustment Assistance for workers in the Oval Office before making remarks in the Rose Garden. In his remarks, President Obama will underscore that these trade agreements will significantly boost American exports, support tens of thousands of American jobs and protect labor rights, the environment and intellectual property. President Obama will be joined in the Rose Garden by business and labor leaders as well as workers who will benefit from these bills.
Then on Thursday afternoon an UPDATED press release went out stating that instead, President Obama will sign the Korea, Panama and Colombia Free Trade Agreements and the renewal of Trade Adjustment Assistance for workers in the Oval Office. There will be a stills only pool spray of the signings. The President will no longer make remarks in the Rose Garden following the signings.
Why?
White House officials say the presidents schedule is too busy. (Though, it should be noted, he made time to greet labor leaders and workers in the Rose Garden who had planned to attend the signing ceremony. That event, however, was off-limits to press.)
Republicans on the Hill say that they suspect the White House wanted to avoid a big splashy image of Democrats and Republicans working together to get something done for the economy since that steps on the presidents narrative that the Republicans are obstructionist.

I am also sure the White House did not want pictures and news of his signing the free trade agreements to be seen by labor unions and the OWS idiots.
"rogue coconut in the area"
If he really believes that, then why did he wait three years before getting them passed? Oh yeah, Bush's fault.
Yep! He don’t want his base to know! It might cancel their adoration and his poll bump when he announced his pulling all of our troops out of Iraq and them being home by Christmas.
ABC asking questions? Hmmmpt!
If this is necessary, then the agreement shouldn't have been signed in the first place! Yet another two party sellout of the American people/worker.
I understand that we drop our tariffs immediately while Korea, Panama and Colombia have five years to phase theirs out.
If so, no wonder he's laying low.
Obama wants to keep the image that nothing good in the economy is ocurring and it’s all the Republicans fault. This may come across as too positive and too pro-business for Obama.
bingo!
amen
(also the antitrade Freeper Brigadeers)
This is going to lose another million American jobs.
Good. The delay Obama caused by withholding the agreements while demanding they be passed is was nonsensical and naked partisanship of the worst kind.
Because the Free Trade Agreements represent real job bills???
He did not want the left getting angry with him again for cooperating with the GOP particularly on free trade...something they hate.
