President Barack Obama delivered on another foreign policy promise on Friday with plans to pull the last U.S. troops from Iraq. But in a re-election campaign all about the weak U.S. economy, he may not get much credit.
Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, radical Islamic cleric Anwar al-Awlaki and Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi -- these are all dead U.S. opponents that Democrat Obama can claim a measure of credit for getting.
Now add to that Obama's announcement on Friday that the eight-year war in Iraq is ending, fulfilling a campaign goal he made in 2008 when he declared the conflict a misguided mistake by his Republican predecessor, George W. Bush.
In any other year, Obama might be able to ride these accomplishments to re-election in November 2012. But with the economy teetering and Americans hungry for jobs, the national security successes may only inoculate him from Republican criticism of his foreign policy.
Democratic strategist Bob Shrum said Obama has shown a decisiveness and coolness of character that will help him in 2012, when Obama is seeking a second term. And he called it proof that Obama was able to do the job that his chief opponent for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, Hillary Clinton, said he could not with a famous TV ad.
"We now know the answer to the question of whether he's good at answering the phone when it rings at 3 a.m. to tell him there's a crisis," said Shrum, who was 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's campaign manager.

Let’s not confuse Bummer’s foreign policy with “success.”
The Persian Gulf war victory was not enough to save an honorable man in President George H.W. Bush from the economy and these paltry accomplishments will not save the slimy fraud Obuggery.
What foreign policy?
In order for it to help, DumBO has to have a foreign policy.
The only meaningful foreign policy 0bama has is the policy of bowing to foreign dignitaries on behalf of our nation.
He will help the enemies of America.
Simple enough...It’s the economy Stupid. That is how this election is going to go down.
See post #6.
The one where he alienated our FRIENDS and emboldened and even financed our enemies. THAT foreign policy.
Okay, someone said they killed whoever...where's the body? Most folks could operate a whole lot better if they were believed dead by their enemies.
In the meantime, destabilize North African governments and topple the leadership by supporting Muslim Brotherhood/Hamas/Hizb'allah backed 'revolutionaries' and ensure the arsenals of these nations would fall into the hands of those who are allied with the likes of AlQaida.
Doubtless, those will show up on Israel's doorstep.
Ignore Iran and let them develop nuclear weapons and delivery systems, and perhaps base the same in Venezuela.
Yep. He's a flippin' foreign policy genius--for the other side.
Referring to what currently passes as America’s foreign policy as a “success” - is a bit like referring to Ted Bundy as a dating success.
Oh I think he hopes so. However, I also think the fits going to hit the shan sometime next summmer in the middle east.
Of course, that doesn’t EVEN mention the thousands of firearms placed in drug cartel hands by US Government agencies, leading to hundreds of murders, using our tax dollars, all on the STILL porous southern border.
“the national security successes may only inoculate him from Republican criticism of his foreign policy.”
No..... the country wrecking dictator will not be inoculated by any of this, unless the GOP sit on their hands.
The collapse of the USSR sure helped Bush 41’s re-election, did it not?
I am not aware that there are any successes that can be attributed to the Ubama Regime.
The word ‘success’ is in the same sentence as ‘Obama’s foreign policy’?
Isn’t that like Sarah Palin at Rahm Emanuel’s backyard dinner party?
“Success” would have been to do to Iran what he did to Libya.
