Pat Robertson: GOP Base Is Becoming Too Extreme
Mediaite ^

Posted on 10/24/2011 5:06:54 PM PDT by MitchSouthFla.

Televangelist and mogul Pat Robertson — a man whose name is practically synonymous with the Religious Right — likely took 700 Club viewers by surprise today when he opined that the Republican base is losing support by “pushing” what he described as “an extreme position.”

Robertson expressed worry that Republican front runners are going to alienate voters during the general election by catering to a narrow base:

I believe it was Lyndon Johnson that said, “I doubt these people realize if they push me over to an extreme position that I’ll lose the election. And I’m the one who will be supporting what they want, but they’re going to make it so I can’t win.” Those people in the Republican primary have got to lay off of this stuff. They’re forcing their leaders, the front runners, into positions that will mean they lose the general election. Now whether this did it to Cain, I don’t know, but nevertheless, you know, you appeal to the narrow base and they’ll applaud the daylights out of what you’re saying, and then you hit the general election and they say “no way” and then the Democrat, whoever it is, is going to just play these statements to the hilt. They’ve got to stop this! It’s just so counterproductive! Well. If they want to lose, this is the game for losers. As Right Wing Watch notes, Robertson’s statement came on the heels of a discussion about recent poll favorite Herman Cain‘s shifting views on how the government should approach the issue of abortion.

How long until people take a look at this opinion — made by a man who obviously is deeply integrated in and, we may assume, has a deep commitment to the Republican party — and declare him a “RINO,” proving his point?

Extremism in the pursuit of liberty is no vice.

What happened to that GOP?

Too extreme?

Because we think the government should spend only what they take in?

Because we think the government shouldn’t be involved in giving money to private business?

Because we think the size of the government payroll at local, state and federal levels is far too high?

Because we think there is too much government intrusion into our daily lives, from regulating the amount of water we can flush down a toilet, electricity we burn in a lightbulb, or fat we eat in a meal?

Because we think we should be exploiting any and all domestic energy sources to keep our economy operating?

Because we feel that abortion should not be as easy an option as taking an aspirin for a headache?

Because we believe in honoring our military, and believe the best way to do that is to give them the equipment and funding they need to do the job correctly?

Because we believe all this, we are too extreme?

Yeah right Patty, that “narrow base” set records in the national election last November.
This “narrow base” is gonna do it even bigger November after next.
The Left and RINO media (and their useful idiots like PR) are doing their best to marginalize the Tea Party “narrow base” but all they are really doing is putting blinders on and setting themselves up to be shocked when their wishful thinking is shattered once again.

Anybody know the context and what specifically he's referring to ("lay off this stuff")?

Robertson was a good moral conservative candidate in his time but he's never got the economics right IMO. I don't think he's got a good grasp of low taxes, limited government, and free-market capitalism.

For my money, Pat has gone daft. The "Republican Base" is no where near conservative enough. The "base" of the GOP has been shifting left for years. That is how the nation has gotten to the low point we are currently enjoying. But then again what do I know? I haven't been a Big R Republican since 1998.

Robertson recently said it was fine for a Christian to divorce a spouse with Alzheimers disease simply due to dementia. Chapter and Verse, Mr.Roberton????? I think Pat is trying to get a divorce from his wife. I don’t know what has come over him.

Is he getting these 'feelings' from people he knows and talks to - or from 'letters' he receives?

Democrats have been known to send out fake letter - pretending to be conservatives....

Pat’s main beef with those of us on the right is that we support Israel and he is a dirty, rotten, filthy anti-semite.

He loves the Palenstinians.

You’re delusional if you think Patrob is saying anything remotely like what Jim Robinson beleives.

It offends me.
