In May 1990, my mother lost her 7 year battle with breast cancer at the age of 57. It was an unspeakable loss for me.
My father and I cared for her together at home until the end. For many years following, I generously supported Susan G. Komen and Race for the Cure. Each year, my family would walk in memory of my mother and to honor others who still struggled.
A few years later, my eyes were opened to the irony of the Komen/Planned Parenthood Connection and I withdrew my support.
First, I understood that Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the world. Second, I realized that abortion had been linked to breast cancer for years and the research continued to become more clear. And third, I learned that Susan G. Komen contributed over $3 million dollars to Planned Parenthood between 2003 and 2008.
Even today, I remain dumbstruck at the continued relationship between Susan G. Komen and Planned Parenthood. For 25 years now, October has been a time to help raise awareness of the impact of breast cancer. This October, lets help spread the word about a leading cause of breast cancer abortion.
Komen and Planned Parenthood continue to deny the abortion-breast cancer link, despite numerous studies that clearly show the following:
According to the most recent data available from the Guttmacher Institute (the research arm of Planned Parenthood), Planned Parenthood did over 25 percent of all abortions in the United States in 2008, a total of 324,008 abortions. In that same year, they performed zero mammograms. In spite of these facts and the urging of Eve Silver, a member of Komens Latino Advisory Committee, Komen continues to fund Planned Parenthood. In 2010 alone, Komen donated $569,000.

I guess they think it’s job security for them????
I have become so irritated at the very sight of those pink ribbons that I’ve launched into a few dissertations this month. I hope I educated a few people in the interim.
The public really needs to turn their collective back on SGK. SGK is a sleazy, evil, dishonest “charity” that should go by the wayside.
It astounds me how many companies are promoting Komen.
Even Lowes has a “pink” section of flowers labeled with the Komen pink ribbon.
Susan G. Komen’s sister started this “charity” - the sister is doing quite well financially because of it.... The sister, imho, is the quintessential opportunist and has used her sibling’s death to promote her own agenda.
Additionally, whenever I express my distaste for Komen I'm accused of not "understanding" how horrible breast cancer is. The truth is that I'm not aware of a single person, myself included, that hasn't had multiple relatives and close friends with breast cancer.
I have told many store clerks why I would not buy any of their merchandise if it was connected to Komen and I have to look hard to find golf balls without the pink ribbon.
I will do without something I want rather than give them a penny.
Surely there are cancer societies that don’t get themselves tangled up with abortion. Those would be more worthy recipients of memorial walk funds and the like. Why has the Komen cause polluted itself like this. With or without the irony that prematurely terminated pregnancies increase the vulnerability of women to getting breast cancers later in life.
Or more straightforwardly they sold out of dark roast because most people wanted it.
My wife has battled breast cancer since 1996. She does not support Komen.
I’ve seen this data many times before and a cause and effect relationship is undeniable... My question is: Are there multiple types of breast cancer and if so can abortion related/hormonal triggers be attributed to a particular variety of cancer?
The breast is the only organ not fully developed at birth
The breast is NEVER mature until after 32 weeks of pregnancy
Interruption of a pregnancy before 32 weeks leaves cancer prone lobules exposed to the DNA damaging effects of estrogen, a hormone that causes breast cell proliferation

Hate the pink ribbons too. Most breast cancer survivors I know do not let it define them. They feel blessed and move on.
In the 60’s & 70’s breast feeding was discouraged and drugs administered following childbirth to ‘dry up the breast milk’. Have often questioned what chemicals/hormones were used and if that might have facilitated cancer growth. Breast feeding is back in vogue. Wonder if there are comparitive studies.
Yes, a lot of grocery chains have gone into the collecting for charity thing. When you check out you’re asked to give one dollar to whatever.
Last time it was breast cancer. I asked the clerk what particular organization the drive supported. She didn’t know but checked. Turned ut it was the Komen.
I explained why I don’t donate to them and everyone around was shocked but agreed with me.
Maybe somebody has the numbers. It would seem, like you said, that Ms. Brinker would be a wealthy woman, Komen foundation or no. But for her to receive more than nominal amounts from the Komen foundation would be improper, and probably she should be returning those.
My company is in full push mode for this event...tailgate party ahead...everyones wearing pink...(I’m not)...and every morning management stands up to promote it heavily.
My work associates cannot understand why I am not supporting this “good” cause when so many people have family members or friends who have lost loved ones to cancer. I thus far have simply said I don’t care to participate....which astounds them since I have had three bouts with cancer in my lifetime.
Komen is just another money grabbing organization...did nothing for me nor were any available to assit....I was simply put thru to one line after another line and another and another....it was like being in a telephone referral ferriswheel!
Maybe this is idealistic to ask, but why could there not be a clamor for the Komen foundation to purify its operations? If you give to fight breast cancer, by golly it should go to fight breast cancer, and not do squat for abortions (even by freeing up money for abortions).
if it’s any comfort to fembots who push this crap
men get prostate cancer at a much higher rate and die too
that should make some of them content
..not as good as castrating us might sound to them but it helps I’m sure
our local grocery store always asks me if I want to donate to sg komen, and I always say only when they stop supporting abortion will i donate- I always get a look and have to explain myself
Komen is supported by the American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society so therefore has NEVER received any support from me.
I support nothing that uses false information to push an agenda, most especially fake science.
IMHO, the Communist Chinese gov't is the largest abortion provider in the world (but I'm not meaning to downplay the scoundrels at Planned Parenthood - don't get me wrong).
This probably means in the “free world.”
In China it isn’t even a choice if bringing the pregnancy to term would enlarge the family past state restrictions.
Some breast cancers are attributable to a genetic predisposition. I don’t remember what the gene is, but it’s the cause of most aggressive breast cancers early in life. In general, breast cancer incidence is closely correlated with a woman’s history of childbearing and breastfeeding, including abortion and miscarriage. (Some studies have indicated that induced abortion is uniquely harmful, because many miscarriages are the result of inadequate hormone production or have that as an outcome.)
Even if there were no connection between abortion and breast cancer, there is also no connection between Planned Parenthood and breast cancer prevention, research, or treatment. Surely the financial support of this organization by the Komen Foundation is deliberate and ideological.
What has the Lung Association done to gain your ire? Preach that smoking kills?
Same here but my mom didn’t make it a year.
So are the American Lung Association and American Cancer Society. Both support SGK and both are sleazy, evil, and dishonest. Also neither should be considered a "charity."
Yep...that would be me too...you go thru it to get on the other side...and 'life' then moves forward....and it is grand to be alive!
I've got plenty without them, however they mostly have tobacco logos on them.
bttt
A friend who’s a breast cancer survivor participates in the Avon Walk. Below is a link to their grants. I perused several pages, and it SEEMS to be geared to providing funds to cancer centers and local community programs that provide breast cancer patient support/diagnostics services for the poor, etc. I didn’t see any Avon Walk money going to Komen or PP.

My mother, who had five children, died of breast cancer in 1969 when I was almost 23. Cancer runs in my family, but I would never support SGK in any way. I know a useful idiot when I seen one.
That certainly sounds dubious of a “Lung” association. If fighting cancer has logically little to do with promoting abortion, then fighting the spectrum of lung diseases (cancer and otherwise) has even less logically to do with it.
What a shame, since both these charities have such a high profile and they are what the average person would think of when suddenly faced with the issue.
(Still, smoking can easily be carried to the point that it kills. Duck’n & runn’n.)
As far as I know, most if not all of these orgs (American Cancer, American Lung, Alzheimer’s Association, etc) support the destruction of embryos for “research and development”. Same as abortion, in my opinion.
You are correct!
I can see how, for the unsophisticated, it would seem “any port in a storm.” But almost all the human successes have come with non embryonic stem cells, and for the development of others there are always animal subjects, about which humane slaughter is never objected to. Why don’t we always hear about this wonderful embryonic stem cell technique which is saving the life of cats or dogs, say? Why do the first guinea pigs for that always seem to be humans?
this organization is a marketing machine.
They CLAIM “for the cure” so NOBODY else is allowed, theoretically, to have a 5k for the cure or “marathon for the cure” or “picnic for the cure”.
I remember statements where komen has some astronomical administrative expense. essentially most of their money goes to raise more money.
The breast is the only organ not fully developed at birth
Credibility would be better without glaring errors like this.
Brain isn’t fully developed either.
kickbacks and consulting fees make any salary giveback a joke.
And that would be a temptation greater than many mortals could withstand. Still, is that actually the bulk of her wealth?
Yes, and neither is skin, IIRC.
... still it is AN organ which is not completely developed at birth, and which has thus and such characteristics as described. It’s a relatively trivial fix. It ought to be made, but still it’s trivial.
As if there would be a single, “the” cure. From all that doctors know about cancer, it is a many-uglied thing representing a cornucopia of cellular dysfunction.
You can have marches for “a cure” or for “cures.”

80% of the monies collected by Komen foundations stay local with 20% going to Komen for administrative cost. Local/state foundations determine who they give their 80% to in the form of grants. None of the 20% goes for grants.
In Mississippi not one penny goes to Planned parenthood but is used to support Operation Bloom, which provides screening and mammograms to areas w/o access or people who cannot afford it.
Not to say that there are not other or better organizations who raise funds for breast cancer but before giving to Komen, you may want to check with your local/state Komen Foundation.
I had breast cancer and spent a full year undergoing treatment at our excellent cancer center. I saw no help from Susan B Komen anywhere in the center. The American Cancer Society was everywhere.
Their volunteers were always in the waiting room waiting for people they drove back and forth to appointments. They have a store that gives away wigs. They run a group to help people connect with others who have cancer.
I will continue to donate to them.
No doubt the cancer society has their “volunteers” and their “donations” of wigs etc. to assist. Usually these are run by “volunteers” within the salon industry. The same goes for the “drivers”.
The groups one visits are generally people crying on each others shoulders...did nothing for me, I wanted answers and coping techniques to see me thru the treatments in the best way possible. That was NOT at at these meetings...after the second one I did not return...they were terribly depressing hearing people’s problems and only brought me down.
So where’s all the money going?
