After a series of poor debate performances in the early months of his presidential campaign, Texas Gov. Rick Perry is backing off the upcoming GOP debate schedule, committing to just one of the next three events between now and Nov. 15.
Perry has struggled in the five debates he has attended since he joined the race in mid-August. At one, he fumbled an attempt to cast rival Mitt Romney as a flip-flopper. At another, bickering between Romney and Perry drew criticism that the candidates were acting juvenile.
Perry hinted at his frustration with the debates earlier this week when he told Fox News that participating in them was a mistake.
These debates are set up for nothing more than to tear down the candidates, Perry said.
All theyre interested in is stirring it up between the candidates.

I would take my 14 million and head home, there are better uses for it.
Did he show up for the previous ones?
I am not at this time a Perry supporter but the debates as presently held are ridiculous. They have settled nothing. The front runner whomever that happens to be at the time still only garners around 25%.
Looks like Rick is taking his boots and hat and heading to a drugstore lunch counter.
So much for being the “Trial by Fire” candidate. Perry is the “Duck and Cover” candidate.
He’s done.
Good for Perry. It’s about time someone did this. I wish the others would follow suit.
These debates are nothing more than media-controlled soundbite-generators.
Jerry Springer style debates for Jerry Springer style majorities of politically active constituents in the political parties. Socialists trying to wrench revenues/debt from other socialists.
This will not work.
I would suggest to Governor Perry that instead of ducking debates, spend more time preparing for them. With some work, he could improve his debating skills. As well all know, W was not exactly Socrates, but W worked hard at improving his debate skills and was able to overcome some of his more annoying habits and still win the election. I don’t know if the electorate will accept a sub-par speaker such as W this time around, but Rick Perry will never know that unless he gets serious about his debating skills.
Yet Perry continues to shoot himself in the foot even while not debating.
Perry mispeaks as much while campaigning. He even didn’t sound as if he didn’t completely understand what was supposed to be his own tax and spending plan.
Agreed. He keeps shooting himself in the foot.
I like some elements of his economic plan. A full-blown domestic energy program would definitely make our economy boom, but his flat tax proposal, was just that — flat. My second favorite tax reform would be a flat tax. But, this flat tax should be no more than 10% and all should pay it, no exemptions, no exclusions.
Texan’s don’t walk away from a fight. Perry is kuput.
I’m riding the Cain Train.
