As abhorrent as the name is, what frightens you more, a parent's bad taste or the fact that the government can take your children if they don't approve? So much for free speech.

I wonder if they named him Joseph Stalin, if anyone would have raised a stink?

So much for free speech. Free speech has nothing to do with it; the ability to seize a citizen from their family for arbitrary reasons is much more the problem here. Yes, I think registrars should stop accepting novelty names, and I mean ALL novelty names, including those cutesy novelty spellings that idiots come up with. But that is a completely separate issue - the government stole someone's parents away, at the same time stealing a child from parents, and their entire excuse is some made up problem with the name.
If it was such an issue, get a judicial order to have the name changed. Just wish there was a sane DA in the neighborhood to charge child services with kidnapping. Demonstrate where in the law you've permission to take a child simply because you despise their name.

I know a guy that named his kid Harley David so he can,”this is Harley David my son.” Takes all kinds.

I wonder what the likely outcome is. Son grows up being known as "Adolph Hitler Campbell," becomes a skinhead criminal and kills a few people? Or son grows up embarassed by the name, goes by Dolph, and eventually changes it to Dolph Harvey?
I don't know.
To: kingu
Well, of course free speech has something to do with it; the name is the pretext for the state-kindnapping. It is viewpoint discrimination made worse by their custody action.

I doubt there is any judicial procedure in the United States to force a name change for a child.
The procedure would likely be: take the child away, and reach an agreement with the parents that the child could be returned if the name is changed.

I don't see any problem unless they buy him

It could go other way, and it's a terrible shame to do that to a child, but it's none of the government's business. How is it that this is an issue, when their are children being beaten and God knows what else. Why not focus on real problems; the kids in serious need of help?

Have you never seen this “family” in the news before? You would not have made that comment if you knew the loooonnnnngggg backstory.
This is not about free speech. The parents are abusive.

Which is more dangerous to society, a family with an 80 average IQ, no money and a bunch of stupid names, OR a government which can take your children at will?

I agree with the action taken by the Division of Youth and Family Services if, and only if, the child was named Barack Obama.

I had a grandfather named Adolph - from the old days.
Now it,s on the list of least used names. Soon to be joined, perhaps, by "Barack".
