Most of guns stolen from LAPD may have hit black market
LA Times ^ | 10/29/11 | Joel Rubin

All but three guns in a cache of weapons stolen earlier this month from an unguarded building used by the Los Angeles Police Department's SWAT unit remain missing and may have been sold or traded on the black market, police said Friday.

Police arrested two men on suspicion of committing the heist and three others for allegedly possessing the recovered weapons, said Cmdr. Andrew Smith. Much to police officials' dismay, however, the rest of the roughly 30 weapons stolen were not found in the suspects' possession...

LA to Mex. is a pretty short trip.

These will need a barrel replacement before they are suitable for narco-terrorist use of standard ammunition.

HK barrels are not the easiest to get, but not real hard either.
Head-space is not set in the standard manner, hopefully the Narco’s armorer gets it wrong and the guns blow up real good!

It shouldn’t be too hard to machine the necessary barrels.

What, they don’t test their refurbished guns?

HK barrels do NOT use standard chambers, or a standard locking system.

They are one brand that your average trained U.S. gunsmith may have trouble with, Mezzican gun-butchers may well inadvertently destroy them.

It seems these were blank (Simunition?) firing guns, they will not chamber standard ammunition.

I’m hopeful of massive structural failure on firing after “Repair”.

Actually, HK’s are enough of a pain to re-barrel that whoever sold these to the gangs may end up dead.
It would be simpler to obtain working guns from South America than to re-work these.

The gangs may feel ripped off, not a wise career move for the smugglers who probably did not know they are blank firing guns.
These are mostly good for parts.

I bet they need a different set of operating springs, as well. Sim rounds are pretty light charges so I would think they would have lighter springs in them. I don’t know a whole lot about the MP-5, though.

First, the real cause as stated accurately in the LA Times article:
“Serving in the unit is one of the most prestigious assignments in the department, and members are entrusted with specialized weaponry and trained to methodically think through the possible outcomes of situations before acting.”

Thinking ahead seems to have been a case of a failed attempt to “think out of the box” for these SWATties.

The Guru confidently predicts that neither XEROX PARC nor APPLE will be attempting to hire any of these SWATties that will be fired as a result of this fiasco.

After all, LA is robbery central.

As proof of the above, note the following:
“The decision to leave the guns in the building overnight violated department safety procedures, Downing said. “Appropriate measures” had been taken in response to the gaffe, he said, although he declined to say if any officers were facing discipline.”

The BoyzN’Blue will protect their own, no matter how brain dead their actions.

Gubbament Trough Feeders, with guns and armored vehicles.

Any JAG officers on FR who could describe the penalties visited upon military personnel who commit such acts of egregious stupidity?

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. Actually, MP5s and G36s [as the Mexican FX-05 Xiuhcoatl] are manufactured in Mexico.

If they're down there, finding barrels will be easier than finding them here, at around $160 each. .

The gangs may feel ripped off, not a wise career move for the smugglers who probably did not know they are blank firing guns.

Anybody that buys a used gun, who knows anything about guns always checks the barrel and chamber.

The last thing you want to buy is a burned out or pitted barrel.

If you really want the gun and are willing to replace the barrel at least you are going to make the seller give you a low end price.

I think even a gang banger is going to look down the barrel.

Of course if you are selling to a gang banger it would be wise to be honest with them when selling them a firearm.
