I do not disagree with your thoughts. However logically speaking, it is too early for the liberals to stick Cain with this type of explosive story. They would have waited until Cain actually won the nomination.
My first instinct is to suspect Romney operatives, because Romney feels Herman’s hot breath on the back of his neck already. I would also not rule out Perry opertives since Cain is the biggest obstruction in his path.
I too first thoughts was to suspect Romney operatives, because Romney feels Herman’s hot breath on the back of his neck already, but after seeing the pure vitriol that Perry Supporters have demonstrated toward Herman and considering ruff and tumble LBJ politics of Texas I to would not rule out Perry operatives. In fact Cain would be wise not to get in an car that hasn’t been throughly inspected anytime he’s in Texas.

I agree with all of your premise. Why Dems would bash Cain so early? More likely RINO establishment hoping Romney or Perry get a bounce off this story. Romney would have the most to gain to get over the 29% ceiling in his poll numbers to lock up the nomination, although Perry could gain from a fall in Cain's momentum going into Iowa.
You are obviously not familiar with liberals. They will smear anyone they perceive as a threat, now or in the future. At the moment, Cain is leading so they are after him. They chased Palin around the country and planted a junk journalist in the house next to hers and she is not even running. When Bachman made a good showing they started the rumor that her husband is gay and they claimed she fostered 23 kids just for the money the state provides for such services. When Perry was doing well they uncovered the Niggerhead rock at an old hunting lease and claimed Perry is a racist. They have hated Newt since 1994. Yet, they love Mix and Match Mitt.

Why? They in particular and conservatives in general have no history of dirty politics. We often wish they would beat the Democrats at their own game but they don't.
