If the sexual harassment allegations against former pizza mogul Herman Cain turn out to be credible or simply refuse to fade away polling suggests that former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney stands the most to gain, the Washington Post reports.
While its too early to say what if any damage the allegations reported by Politico on Sunday will do to Cains campaign, they have the potential to shake up the race. Cain has been polling in first or second place for more than a month; if his campaign is unable to recover from the scandal, other candidates will try to attract his supporters before the primaries.
A NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll this month asked primary voters to name both their first and their second choices for president. According to the Post, the poll indicates that Romney would have the most to gain from a Cain implosion. With the former Godfathers CEO out of the picture, Romneys numbers jump from 23 percent support to 32 percent. That would mark the first time Romney picked up the support of more than 30 percent of primary voters and establish him as the sole front-runner for the nomination.
Texas Governor Rick Perry also stands to gain from the scandal should it pick up traction. Perry garnered the support of 16 percent of voters the when the poll was taken, a number that rises to 22 percent with Cain out of the running. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann would make more modest gains, picking up 4 points Gingrich moving to 12 percent and Bachmann to 9 percent.
The poll was conducted October 610 among 336 Republican primary voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 5.35 percentage points.
What scandal?
Like Cain (supposedly) making rude suggestions is worse than the Lewinskis in the White House or pregnant women.
Sorry, MSM, this just doesn’t hack it any more.
And even if Cain did make such a suggestion, I’m tired of political correctness. Let the afflicted woman slap him, slug him, or kick him. If he does something back, then he’s in trouble. Not before.
And you libs can shove it up your collective smelly Obamas.
Get over it.
That was my first thought.hat scandal.
My second thought-— in today’s world what difference does it make? In my world it should not happen. In the real world it is an every day occurrence that only the good guys regret.
I’ve been keeping my powder dry for as long as I can so I can make an informed decision regarding my choice for our nominee... time’s up, I’ve decided. It’s Cain... he has been driving the debates; he’s been kind, considerate and positive all along the way; he doesn’t have that canned candidate speak sound when he talks; the talking heads on the left ridicule him as a republican house slave; the moderate right talking heads have been ignoring him as an illegitimate candidate... hell, they’re still hooked on a Perry-Romney boxing match, problem is, Perry’s been KO-ed by his own left hook. All this adds up Cain VS Obama... I’m buying my ticket to ride... I’ll be sending my donation this week and placing a sign in my yard.
Another hi-tech lynching and they’re even using the same playbook they used on Justice Clarence Thomas.
Hey lefties get over it. You could come up with some story that Cain fornicates with goats and we still won’t believe it. Nothing and I mean nothing is going to deter us from coming after you. Your days are numbered and they are not many.
As much as I despise Romney, this is a hypothetical projection, and I think it’s highly unlikely that any Cain supporters (who are very personally committed to their guy) would switch to Romney.
That's O.K. I'm just more determined to help Herman win.
What scandal?
If there was any truth to this very old incident the media would have used it months ago to destroy someone that could hurt their boy Obama................
There’s an opportunity here for Cain to win big.
He must not pull a ‘poor me’.
He must not allow his campaign to point fingers at his opponents’ possible ‘dirty tricks’.
He must have the facts uncovered, publicized and his innocence totally, absolutely and unequivocally proven.
He must then move on with his dignity intact.
Will be folk hero Herman!!!!
I really don't see how Mitt Romney benefits with said created scandal. Those supporting him make up the 30% or so of the base. He is a (mostly) known entity. Accordingly, that level has never risen because the other 70% or so are wary.
First it went to Michele Bachman until she turned out to be gaffe-prone. Then it went to Perry until he turned out to be another RINO with a conservative wrapper. Then it went Herman Cain because people actually got to know him.
In the unlikely event that this non-story makes Cain stumble, the likely place for the support to return would be Michele Bachman. Gaffes are far easier to tolerate than RINOism.
¨White man speak with forked tongue.¨
Superb analogy.
Even though he's gotten a mini-bump from his recent "me-too" tax reform plan, I believe he won't be able to help keep from punching himself again. Do you?
RINO Hugh Hewitt is positively drooling to get on the air tonight to pronounce the Cain candidacy dead for the tenth time and push his baby Romney, just like he did Arnold over Tom McClintock.
He dreams of the Lincoln bedroom.
They call THAT a scanal, but Bubba did was swept under the rug & he continued to sit in the oval office! Oh Please, I don’t think this will hurt Cain one bit!!!
Hugh Hewitt is definitely a RINO. He really doesn’t try to hide it.
As much as some would like to see Mr Cain smeared with scandal, they will be disappointed to learn that there is no scandal. Rather than going to court to fight false charges, Mr. Cain settled. He saved himself precious time and, no doubt, a ton of lawyer fees!
Now whoever is responsible for this attack should be sued, but like most true Christians, Mr. Cain will not do that. It would be more trouble than it is worth!
Mitt and Ricks Secret Donor Deal
Sep 20, 2011 11:26 PM EDT
Before they were rivals for the 2012 GOP nomination, Mitt Romney and Rick Perry got entangled in a $1 million donation controversy that a judge ruled broke the law. Steve McVicker reports.
It might be hard to imagine after last weeks GOP presidential slugfest, but there was a time not too long ago when a group headed by Mitt Romney quietlyand a judge says illegallyhelped Rick Perrys political career in Texas and set the stage for his new nemesis to rise on the national stage.
Spokesmen for Romney and Rick Perry did not return repeated requests seeking comment.
Rick Perrys campaign has denied in the past that it did anything wrong but settled its role in the lawsuit by making a $427,000 payment in 2010, court records show.
Still, if I had to make a wager on it, my money would be on Karl Rove as the perpetrator of this vile smear campaign against Mr. Cain.
