Another Question, This Time Financial, for Herman Cain
The New York Times ^ | October 31, 2011 | NICHOLAS CONFESSORE

Posted on 10/31/2011 3:36:34 PM PDT by mdittmar

Early in his candidacy, Herman Cain may have accepted tens of thousands of dollars in goods and services for his campaign from a tax-exempt organization founded by his top aide, documents from the organization show, raising the prospect of serious violations of tax and election law by both Mr. Cain’s campaign and the organization.

The documents suggest that the nonprofit organization, Prosperity USA, effectively subsidized some early costs of his presidential bid, paying for computer equipment, charter planes and air travel for Mr. Cain or the aide, Mark Block, who is his chief of staff.

Such expenditures would violate federal election and campaign laws, which prohibit tax-exempt groups from engaging in any political activity or contributing to election campaigns, a major problem for Mr. Cain. He spent much of Monday fending off accusations that he had sexually harassed two former employees of a trade association he once led.

“Prosperity USA was running more than $100,000 in the red”

Even if Prosperity USA fails to qualify as a tax-exempt organization, it sounds like they operated at a loss and based on the facts in the story we are talking about relatively tiny amounts of contributions ($65,000 in contributions total?) that in retrospect may not have been made to a tax-exempt organization as was originally believed.

For the Slimes, these are “serious violations of tax and election law,” but Obama’s many millions of contributions coming in from overseas and as to which they turned off the credit card address verification service? Not a problem!

He’s conservative.
He just might win the White House.
Therefore, he must be destroyed.

That’s the “logic” of our media today.

This story (which has been posted a few times today) is full of "might be", "could be", "may be". Unlike the following story, which nobody in the media is writing or talking about. I wonder why?

Mitt and Rick’s Secret Donor Deal
Sep 20, 2011 11:26 PM EDT

Before they were rivals for the 2012 GOP nomination, Mitt Romney and Rick Perry got entangled in a $1 million donation controversy that a judge ruled broke the law. Steve McVicker reports.

It might be hard to imagine after last week’s GOP presidential slugfest, but there was a time not too long ago when a group headed by Mitt Romney quietly—and a judge says illegally—helped Rick Perry’s political career in Texas and set the stage for his new nemesis to rise on the national stage.

Spokesmen for Romney and Rick Perry did not return repeated requests seeking comment.

Rick Perry’s campaign has denied in the past that it did anything wrong but settled its role in the lawsuit by making a $427,000 payment in 2010, court records show.

Wake me up when Herman Cain is accused of funneling campaign funds to hide an illegitimate baby-mama and newborn infant.

Um - Cain didn’t announce his run until May - even if this were true, how can it be considered a donation to his campaign?

Are these people high? There is no such prohibition against tax-exempt groups.

Damn I’m glad you’ve posted this. If there’s a nefarious activity on the campaign trail Perry’s got to be involved. The Marlboro man’s a menace.

Recall Perry as governor of Texas, the people of Texas deserve a leader. And also, to hell with Mitt.

This is so bogus. I won’t get into too much detail, but Cain became a candidate in May 2011. Anything before that doesn’t fall under Federal Election Campaign laws.

Candidates are allowed to “test the waters”. They can raise money during this time, travel, give speeches, etc. etc. The rules don’t kick in until they officially become a candidate.

The article somehow fails to cite this. Hmmmm, I wonder why?

All such info on candidates is available via the freedom of information act...IF this was true...an absolute and reliable source needs to be shown...otherwise...the gossip mongers should take a hike

The Democrat Leadership Council which was instrumental in getting Bill Clinton elected President is also tax exempt. Go figure.
