Alas, it didn't quite work that way. The Washington Post came up with the word on a rock. Cain merely responded to the issue of "the N-word", which is the way you handle it until you have more information.

He was actually the target since the Post was trying to trip up Cain to demonstrate that he was an Uncle Tom ~ who could not attract black voters.

The Democrats do not want Cain in this race. They will do anything to keep him out.

Well in retrospect Cain could have kept mum or said he was looking into it while researching what really happened, because it did make Cain look a little like a loose cannon. The objectionable situation was apparently addressed in the late eighties; Cain voted for Clinton later than that. Now Perry gets a free shot at Cain today saying look who’s the loose cannon now? (Whether or not it’s true or relevant.)
